These guys are pushy and make you feel bad if you don't want to donate.

I'm not sure where they get our numbers from but they have called all 4 lines into our house including our fax number - I wish they would stop.

They also claimed to be calling on behalf of "Pediatric Aids Canada".  Are they legitimate?....

After being continually bombarded by the this number calling our fax number, we managed to get hold of their "customer service department" for "Pediatric Aids Canada".

They can be reached on 1-800-280-9023 and press option "1" to speak to a representative.

I know charities are exempt from the Canadian "do not call" list, but I do think some of the Charities abuse this privilege.  We give to the Charities we want to give to and are happy with that - we won't be swayed by "pushy" callers!

they are *not* legitimate

if you disagree with me and feel that they are legit and you want to donate, ask for them to send a form in the mail.

but I'm pretty sure that this is a total, baldfaced, disgusting scam

They are using similar telemarketing tactics in the USA with the charity that Pediatric AIDS Canada set up called "The American Foundation for Children with AIDS".
Pediatric AIDS Canada has been the subject of scrutiny by the Canadian media for their past fundraising tactics. You can easily find numerous complaints by doing a web search.

Both agencies  have employed the same telemarketing firm to make their calls, known as XENTEL.If you do some google research on how this operation works, you will find that only a small portion of the money donated ever goes to direct service.

This is absolutely a scam.  They called me today, this is what transpired:

The lady on the phone said she was calling from Pediatric AIDS Canada.  She asked if I'd heard of a new medication which, when given to infants, 100% prevented AIDS.  I said I did not and she proceeded to repeat that this medication, when given to infants, was 100% successful in preventing AIDS.  She said they were looking for donations of $150 to $250.  This would save 60 babies.  That is a direct quote.  I said that I was unemployed and could only make a small donation (at this point I already believed this to be a scam).  She said that any little bit helped.  I said I could donate $10.  She said I would be saving 2 babies.  I like the math there.  Anyway, she said "Bless you" and transferred me to someone else to confirm my donation.

The next woman came on the line and said "Can I have your VISA or Mastercard information".  I said that I would be mailing in a payment.  She said that the medication had an expiry date and would expire before a mailed in payment could reach them and could she have my credit card information.  I said "I don't have a credit card."  She then told me I could mail payment and gave a street address and postal code (no city, no province).  She said this VERY fast.  I said, "Pardon me?"  She repeated the postal code only, told me to have a nice day and hung up.  The address and postal code were that of my father's business (probably the next in line in the phone book).

I used to work for PAC as their office manager... they used to be legitimate... but are now no longer a charity as the executive director was using illegal means (the calls you guys were receiving) to collect donations. They used a company out of Toronto which has everyone's phone numbers and call everyone for you... so really, the people calling you, were not even from PAC.

Pediatric AIDS Canada was a totally legitimate charity that sent medical supplies (mostly anti-retroviral drugs)to Africa to help children with AIDS. To find donors and raise funds, they hired a telemarketing company (nothing illegal there).
However, they were poorly managed and eventually closed down. Probably well-intentioned, no scam, just incompetent managers.

Spare us your rationalization. "... a small monthly amount by credit card ... charity will put you on the telmarketer's Do Not Call list, so you'll stop getting phone calls" is blackmail. Why won't charities stop calling when requested? Just because they can? If they won't stop when asked to, I scream at them until they hang up - what do you do?

Telemarketer
There are two issues here: 1) telemarketers and 2) Pediatric AIDS Canada.

1) Nobody likes telemarketers. BUT, they are the absolute best and fastest way to create a donor base. They are far more efficient than volunteer callers. They also cost a lot of money -  first, because they're a business and, second, because there's a huge infrastructure: pay the callers, record your donor information, mail the pledge form, record the donation information when your cheque reaches their office, mail out a receipt, maintain and update their Do Not Call list. And so on.

Telemarketers use emotional language and are insistent. That's their job. They also use computer-run dialers which call 3 or 4 numbers at a time. If I pick up the phone first, the other three phones stop ringing ... that's why the line is often dead when I answer. It's more than annoying, it's maddening. But otherwise, 80% of the caller's time would be spent listening to phones ringing and the telemarketer would go out of business.

The telemarketer finds the donor. They're a pain when they call at suppertime and, to reduce costs, they sometimes use offshore call centres, so the caller has an accent. But there is nothing illegal or Scam-like in what they do.
The problem, and the challenge for the charity, is to build the relationship between the donor and the charity so that there is no further need for the telemarketer. And this is were a lot of charities fall down flat ... including Pediatric AIDS Canada.

2) Pediatric AIDS Canada sent anti-retroviral drugs to hospitals and clinics in Africa. They were a totally legitimate charity. But they were incompetently managed. They did not build their relationships with their donors. Instead, they continued relying on telemarketing to generate funds. This got them into trouble with Canada Revenue, whose job it is to make sure that the money donated to a charity goes to the end beneficiary and does not get eaten up in administration and fundraising costs. And that,s why CRA pulled the plug. The organization wasn't dishonest, just inept.

There are lots of worthwhile charities that use telemarketing as a tool to find new donors and raise funds. But it has to be one tool among many others. Before donating, make sure that you look at the charity's audited financial statements -- they're almost always available online. You can also chack the Canada Revenue Agency's website for information on the charity in question. If you then want to donate, consider a small monthly amount by credit card. That eliminates the telemarketing costs, all of your donation goes to the charity and the charity will put you on the telmarketer's Do Not Call list, so you'll stop getting phone calls.

Captn may be thinking about himself.  There are many people including myself that give hundreds of dollars to charitable organizations.  We have a screening machine on our phone which intercepts all calls but allows legitimate friends or people we do business with to get through.  Pediatric Aids Canada will never get a nickel from us because they employ aggressive telemarketers to raise funds for them.  I told the one who phoned us (and who used the same ploy as mentioned in another post ie. had phoned before and told him to call back at this time.  Also mentioned a pledge sum that I would never make.) to take us off his phone list and hung up on him.  Today I got an invoice from Pediatric Aids Canada stating that I had pledged $60.  That is a sum we NEVER give.  Some get $25 and others get much more.  They also have a wrong address which I know was bought from a data base provided by a magazine publisher that we at one time subscribed to.  They copied our address incorrectly and since then we have had all sorts of solicitations for donations using that address.  To me, Pediatric Aids Canada is an unscrupulous organization.   Captn is totally wrong if he thinks that we need telemarketers to get us to donate.

Feds aim to revoke children's AIDS charity after audit
March 16, 2010
David Bruser
A national charity that collects money in the name of children with AIDS is spending more than 80 per cent of its donations on telemarketing and other non-charitable expenses.
That?s according to an audit report ? prepared by Revenue Canada and obtained by the Toronto Star ? notifying Pediatric AIDS Canada that the federal government has found plenty of reasons to revoke the charity?s license. Pediatric AIDS now has time to respond to the findings.
The audit, which probed the charity?s activities from July 2005 to December 2007, found Pediatric AIDS: Gave $2.8 million, or 61 per cent of total fundraising revenues, to telemarketer Xentel DM and other fundraisers; wrongly counted some of that money as a charitable expense; and paid $877,000 to Lifesgood Inc. to handle procurement and shipping of pharmaceuticals while claiming the value of the drugs was $15.5 million.
?There are legitimate concerns the organization has entered into this donation arrangement in an attempt to conceal its non-charitable activities, i.e. fundraising, and to falsely inflate its charitable activities,? Revenue Canada said.
No one could be reached at the charity office, where a recorded voice claims the charity is ?creating a world where no child dies from AIDS.? When Pediatric AIDS board member Gabriel Etele was reached on his cellphone and a reporter identified himself, the line went dead.
The audit came after a Star investigation of several charities connected to consultant Craig Copland. Ontario corporation documents show Lifesgood Inc. is run by Copland.
In an email, Copland said he has no role in management of Pediatric AIDS and defended the shipments as live-saving. ?Pediatric AIDS Canada has supplied anti-retroviral drugs for the continuing treatment of over 1,000 children who had been diagnosed with advanced AIDS. Most of these children are now still alive directly as a result of receiving those treatments. ... No doubt your article will assist in destroying any chance of its continuing in the future.?
The 2007 Star investigation revealed Copland founded or co-founded at least six Canadian charities that routinely spent 70 per cent or more of donations on telemarketers and other expenses. The Star found the charities exaggerated their good deeds or outright refused to say what they did with the money. Pediatric AIDS was not one of the charities featured in the article.
The Star also showed Copland found Xentel new charity clients and Xentel paid him royalties for charities sent its way. Copland had served on Xentel?s board of directors until the Star first started asking questions.
A Xentel spokesperson confirmed yesterday that Copland still gets royalties but did not comment on the audit findings.

Your usual way of donating! Thats really funny. Will I donate from a phone call, never. Will you sit at home and think of places to donate on your own, never. Your so full of excuses. These organizations are getting free money from the hard work of the telemarketers. Without them calling they would get nothing. You honestly believe that people sit at home and think about donating and then actually do it? Never.

I received a call from them on December 4th.  They stated they would really like a $300 or $150 donation.

I told them I have no credit card but I could mail in a cheque (the whole thing seemed fake so I wanted to see what info they would give me).

Today I received an invoice from them with a pamphlet about Aids care for children in Africa.  It says "Joseph can't afford the medicine he needs to live.  Without your help he will die".

The PO box to send the donation to is conveniently located in the same city where I live.

Pediatric Aids lists a Stratford Ontario address for mail to be sent to, also their 800 number is not this number.

The only thing that IS the same is the website address.  Looking at that, it seems suspicious on it's own.

they asked for 300$
the man was quite pushy, i realize that telemarketers are 'supposed' to be but it is quite annoying never the less.
i asked him to send me info in the mail before i commited to anything and he said he couldn't. and that he needed me to donate first an then he would send me info.
that made me feel that it was a scam.
so i said i couldnt give money without first speaking to my husband.
i would love to donate money to a worthy cause but i felt very unsure of this call.

I am so tired of people asking for donations.. I don't like them calling period... But these guys call and call and call... pushy, rude and most of these telemarkers DON'T SPEAK English... Isnt that one requirement needed to call people?

What really gets me upset is  AIDS is under funded and ignored ... as well as so many others.. Cancer is the one sweeping up, and big business NEED to spread their cash around to everyone.. ALl I see on products is PINK, and more PINK.. Ya cancer needs a cure... so do all the others...

You know maybe if more companies did mix things up more and choose a different Charity each year maybe.. just maybe the AIDS and other groups could get rid of Telemarketers....

I did and followed all the prompts to have my number put on their DNC list. This better resolve the issue or I will contact the proper authorities regarding harrassment. I am already registered with the National Do Not Call list, but still receive lots of calls like this! SICK OF IT...HADENUFF!

I got a call from someone saying they are with Pediatric Aids Canada. I told them they can send me something in the mail if they want. In the material they sent there was an information that they use Xentel DM Incorporated to manage the phone fundrising. I looked at the Xentel website and almost gagged on the sales language there... and the suggestion to send an email to get me from their calling list, yes sure, to get off the call list you have to get on the email list... I think not.
