Just to let everyone know this Company isn't even in the state of Michigan, they are in Illinois.  How can they collect money for a student loan if its not even in the State that you live.

You should never pay any caller unless they have mailed proof of debt and that they have the legal right to collect said debt.  Per the FDCPA, refusal to mail this documentation means you should not pay them a dime.

This number is the Michigan Guarantee Agency. I'm still in shock that this is a Federally funded program with the unprofessionality and accessibility issues. I made the mistake of mailing a check in. They cashed the check then never applied it to my account; following up with threatening letters about receiving their money. I had to go to my bank 3 times and launch a full investigation before they laid off. When I asked to speak to a manager, they weren't available. When I asked how they could just cash soeone's check and not know it, they were dumbfounded. Who AUDITS OUR GOVERNMENT AGENCIES?

I decided to skip checks and pay by card over the phone. After fighting with their automatic system trying to get a person for ten minutes, I asked the collector if there was a direct extension for payment and she instructed me to either say I have a rotary phone or input the wrong information to get help. Really? I have to play games to make a payment??? If this company really wanted people to pay back loans, it seems like they would cut the bull crap and start answring their freaking phones!

I have not received a phone call however I have received letters. The only thing is they have my last name spelled wrong. Correct address. I do owe on student loans but not the amount they say I owe. I could not afford the payments Sallie Mae wanted me to pay and I defaulted. I have been trying to get them to do payment arrangements but they wouldn't work with me. So I have not been able to pay. My name was correct with Sallie Mae. Now this letter I got did not have my s.s. on it but anything I got from Sallie Mae had my last 4 digits on it. So really don't know what to do. I was going to make payment arrangements with them but after seeing all this don't know if I should.

These people are totally pissing me off. Yes, they seem to be real, but they won't stop calling even after I've explained that have got the wrong person. First my wife talked to them and now they're calling again, every frigging day. Of course now that I'm home, they're closed. I just sent them an email to stop harassing me.

We keep getting mail for this person with the same name as my husband from the Michigan Guaranty Agency.  The statement has an account number and everything.  It's annoying because it's in my husbands name going to his old address he lived with at his parents house and he hasn't lived there in over 6 years and never once had a student loan.  We have verified many times with the last four of his ssn and dob that they have the wrong person, but yet they keep sending these annoying notices that aren't even for him.  I feel back with the real person out there with the same name who isn't getting their notices, because they're stuck on my husbands old address for some reason.  We don't even live in the state of MI anymore.

The loans I signed up for were NOT federal, and at the time I took them, bankruptcy judges were not prohibited from discharging them.  That's why bankruptcy judges exists - to determine if the applicant deserves to be forgiven of his/her debt.

"Now in my 50's, with virtually no income, after bankruptcy" and $45,000 in debt is quite a cross to bear. I feel your pain.

Student loans are federal loans, and bankruptcy will not eliminate a federal loan.

While true, this assumes you have money to pay!

I graduated in 1995 with High Honors and $35,000 in debt.  After paying back well over $40,000 and having NEVER been able to get a job in my field (Information Services), I was forced into bankruptcy.  Of course, when I signed up for the student loans, as well as when I graduated, bankruptcy would have wiped out the student loans - but no longer.  Now in my 50's, with virtually no income, after bankruptcy, they still expect me to "simply pay off the loan" to the tune of ANOTHER $45,000.

Can't happen.  Won't happen.

BTW, do the math.  It is painfully obvious that all those prospective employers that were telling me to get a degree despite 15 years experience in the field were really just blowing me off because they can't legally say they want someone younger.  I never learned ANYTHING in college because I already knew the material due to previous WORKING experience.  The ONLY thing I received for my trouble was this massive debt.

Am I bitter?  Sure.  All these stupid anti-discrimination laws caused me to be mislead and ruin my future with loans for a worthless education.

Oh my GoD!!!  I was perusing the web with a suspect mindset looking for  a scam related to this as well. I keep receiving a letter from the Michigan Guaranty Agency that I owe a large sum of cash for a student loan.  I have been out of college for almost 18 years!!! But,  I did have a loan which has been well paid. The letterhead and envelope logo look awkard to me(my first clue) and thsi is the first time I have received a letter with a $$ amount. It is usually just an overdue notice and the threat of collecxtions.  I think it may have to do with a mailing list ciriculated from universities or unemployment agencies of Michigan.  MY NOSE SMELLS SCAM.  DO NOT RESPOND. LET'S MAKE THIS VOCAL AND PUBLLIC AND SAVE OTHERS FROM THE SCAM AS WELL.     MICHIGAN GUARANTY LETTER RECEIVERS WATCH OUT!!! THIS IS A SCAM.    YOUR LOAN INFO. SHOULD COME TO YOU FROM YOU LOAN COMPANY SUCH AS NDSL OR NELNET AND NOT THIS MICHIGAN GUARANTY.   DO NOT SEND MONEY OR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO THIS ORGANIZATION!!!!!

I am not sure if a scam is being pulled on me or what is going on.  This number was given to me by a representative at Nel Net student loans. He said this phone# belongs to Michigan Guaranty Agency.  He said they back up the student loans.  When I called them, they asked for ss#. After I gave them the ss# and told them my question, they put me on hold for 20 minutes and then hung up on me.  I was calling them because I thought a company by the name of Georgia Financial was trying to pull a scam on me or they made some sort of accounting error.  Watch out.

Got a long, rambling message from an unnamed man at this number asking for a reference for a relative. This number is supposedly for a department to the Michigan Department of Revenue collecting on past due student loans.  The person he asked a reference for has been out of school for almost 30 years. I think this is a scam of some sort.
