This number is from the American Express Financial Review Department. All of you idiots really have no idea what is going on. This is not a scam unless someone is spoofing the outgoing number. If you call them back, you are going to be connected to the Amex FR Department. I recently had to go through this process where they will temporarily freeze the spending on your account until they can verify some of your financial information.

As I quote from the American Express website itself: "Charging suspended. Please call 1-800-678-0738 if we haven't already spoken with you.

This number does belong to AMEX, It is their credit department.  If you call customer service they will have no record because for some reason one department does not talk to the other.

i also got this same voicemail message at work:

"Called my office phone number claiming to be an American Express representative. Wanted me to call back with my credit card number."

i figured it was a scam since they didn't use my name.

I got a voicemail at work from this number. The message also told me that it was "an important business matter." I DO NOT even have an American Express card.  I googled this number and came here.  Thanks!  DO NOT CALL BACK.

I got the same exact message as others, except my caller ID showed 516-428-1056.  They tried to reach me on my work number 4 times over the weekend.  I don't have my work number on any of my credit card accounts, so I knew something was fishy.
I did not return the call, thanks to the info on this site!

You know what's even worse?  The people INVOLVED IN THE SCAM are leaving posts HERE saying it's SAFE.  DO NOT CALL PEOPLE!
Got the message at work too.  Completely off-the-hook phishing scam.  Register this with Amex AND the feds.

Got a call from the 516-428-1056 number which registered as a NY cell phone.  The message was scratchy like an international call but could just make out American Express.  They also called my parents house, which means they got inside information from someone as that got next of kin type information, which can only be from a couple businesses I know.
Anyone know who to report it to since the FBI doesnt seem to have time for this?

I just received a call from 216-333-5328 claiming to be American Express on a very urgent matter and that I need to return the call today.  please have your credit card information available... blah blah blah.

I called AE and reported this number, which is a cell phone in Cleveland OH.

It was clearly a scam and now i wish i would have answered so I could have ripped them a new a**.

picked up the messages from my bosses voice mail and thought it really strange that he specified to have his AE card in his hand when he calls and that they MUST HEAR FROM HIM BY THE END OF THE DAY.  Glad I did a search on the phone number first.

Not to worry, my father in-law works with Amex security, he said they are already tracking these a-holes down, apparently they are fairly sophisticated, they have some gear hosted in Level3 Communications in OH and another location and its all connected to a Voice over IP connection.    Its a lot easier to track down VoIP then a regular hardwired landline, these scammers days are closing in very quickly, so they'll be on the news shortly in handcuffs, can't wait to see that!

I got this call today as an urgent call to call 800-678-0738.  I do have an American Express card, and so I called to report it to their security using the number off my credit card.  The guy from security told me that it was a legitimate number from American Express in their credit department.  He then put someone on from that department.

The person told me that American Express has a glitch in their computers and had been calling a bunch of wrong customers.  I kept asking what this was in reference to and the representative wouldn't tell me, but I had the impression that it was based on late or delinquent payment.

So the phone number is American Express, but it is probably for delinquent accounts, and you may have gotten a call by accident.  Th representative told me their computers are even putting in wrong area codes when calling.

I contacted them and told them I am aware they are not American Express and I have reported them to the FTC and Attorney General.  I told them I am aware they are a scam and to have me removed from their list immediately.  They said my number will be removed within 24 - 48 hours.

this number is not a scam. it is the credit dept. if you call the number on the back of your card and ask for the credit dept then once they transfer you ask for their direct #. you will see that it is not a scam. and even if you dont call you can call that # an they can search with you first and last name and then they can verify anything you want them to,they did for me! this is not a scam

Apparently the number is legit:  I contacted Amex ONLINE (about a matter unrelated to this phone number issue), using their secure message area.  Received a reply telling me, they could not handle the matter via secure online messaging, and that I should phone them... "I kindly ask that you contact our Account Services Department at 1-800-678-0738..."

Complete SCAM. Just spoke with AmEx who called the number themselves.  They said it wasn't one of theirs, but the recording sounded like one of their recordings.

I have a feeling people on these lists are here supporting the scam. Sounds like a tried and true scam to me. Dont give these people your info! Amex will always have urgent announcements ready for you on the auto record when you call in using the number on the back of the card.Scammers use the internet too.

These jerks have been calling my business phone every day asking my partner (whose name they can't even pronounce) to call back on an "Urgent Business Matter".  The woman on the phone sounded illiterate and slow ..not the usual sharp AmEx representative I'm used to.  Red flags went up and I checked this site before returning the call -- glad I did.
