I got a call this evening and...

Me: Hello?

Me: yeah.

Me: My computer isn't even set up.

Right after that I called the police. I'm in Ontario and I found out there is a number for this here: 18884958501. I hope the guy tries to call back. I would say, "Damn right there is something wrong with my computer! It works like it should!!"

Well, they sucked me in. The same scam. I was having issues with my computer so I believed them and let them take control of my computer. Can't believe I was so stupid but I was having a lot of error messages going out and they mentioned that right away. Anyway, to make a long story short, they had control of my desktop and my computer runs like a piece of***
Should I reformat C and re-install everything? What else?

I didn't get a call. I got a screen that had the Microsoft logo and a screen with multiple spyware and "Trojan" viruses. There were flashing notices with numbers of spyware viruses. When I tried to look at the warning, a screen came up asking for registration. It was difficult to get the screen closed. I have checked my virus software and Windows Defender. Both said the computer was running normally with no viruses detected. The warning screen was not like any other screens I have seen. Could this be related to the phone calls?

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

Our call allegedly came from a different number: 888-408-6151 - that is the number they provided after 10 minutes of hagling. Same scam - your computer is running slow, = turn it on and tell us what is ont the screen. They called my 87 yr old mother, asking lots of questions. Again, when we asked for supervisor, the thick accented guy put on another guy, with an accent, who verified that he was a Microsoft certified supervisor, and that their company was authorized by Microsoft to support windows XT users. They had our number, but not the correct name or address (which we would not give them). We hung up, and they called back two more times. No doubt a Fraud scam, but elderly people will not know and will probably fall for the scam. That keeps the company(s) in business. I imagine that they change their number frequently.

Today I got a call from a man with a very strong Indian accent. He asked for me by name and said he was calling people who had computers that were using Microsoft Windows XP because they had discovered an extremely vicious virus that was infecting computers with this OS. He asked if my computer had slowed down - I said "no". He then asked if I could go to my computer and turn it on - I said "it is already on". He had a very strong Indian accent and was difficult to understand, so my husband took the phone to see what he wanted. He had trouble too - but eventually I saw him writing down some instructions. I told him to FIRST get the man's name, and the name of the Company he worked for. He gave the company as "a private company" and when I heard that I told my husband to hang up the phone.
My phone has caller ID, so I took down the number. About an hour later my granddaughter came over and I told her about it and she immediately got on the computer and tracked down the info. She also went to a google site, which I didn't copy, and found hundreds of people who had been duped by these people. Below you will find all the info that they had been able to gain about their identity. If you follow any of his instruction at all, even the first one, which is "go to start" these people say your computer will be infected immediately with all kinds of Trojan Horse viruses - so I am passing along the number he uses (the 947 code) as well as the info on the company itself.

Their number is 1-800-698-9034

I got a call today which displayed 'International' on caller display. The man on the other end of the phone said in a very thick Indian accent that they were phoning about a problem with my computer running slow and that they are working on behalf of microsoft. I asked him what the name of the company was and what his name was. I was given the name 'International Software Maintenance Department' and 'PC One' and his name was John Wilson which is a funny name for an indian. Whan I asked him how he got my number he said he got it from and was working on behalf Microsoft!? I also asked him was he going to try to sell me something and he did say yes and when I asked him what he changed it to no and started on again about my computer running slow and asked me to log onto my computer and he'll talk me through what to do and i'll see some virus. When I said 'You want me to log onto my computer when asked to by someone i don't know, a company I've never heard of and who does't give out their number, I don't think so!' (not sure if any international number will actually show up on caller ID tho) he started getting quite abrupt and more or less told me so shut up and let him speak. He seemed very surprised i'd never heard of these companys? I then asked if I could speak to his supervisor or line manager which he replied 'I am the senior software tecnician' When i asked again another man came on the phone (never caught his name) but again in a thick indian accent he started about microsoft and me going onto my computer to see viruses. I replied again 'I don't think so' and asked for a number for them. This is when i was given this 18006989034 number. Tried phoning it back but got a message basically saying it does't exist then searched google and found this info. I know a little bit about computers but by no way a pro. I can easily see how some people could be tricked into doing what they say especially when they start getting abrupt and laying on thick the consequenses of not doing what they ask. Hope they get shut down!!

I got a call from this guy on March 14th, 2010. Heavy Indian accent and he tells me he is calling on behalf of windows to help me with a computer virus I might have. Anyway he said that he worked for windows and was trying to help me get rid of a very bad virus that will make my computer go black and crash. He asked me to go to my computer and he led me through a few things on the start menu until we got to "computer management". The only reason I even went along with this is that I was having "freeze up" problems with my computer just the day before he called. He asked if I saw a list of items with red crosses and yellow warning icons. Yes, I saw that on my computer. Then he said "oh my gosh, you are in big trouble". Then he wanted me to go to my start menu and click on "Run" and then type in www.soc321.com and hit OK. At that point I told him I was not going to hit "OK" because I did not know who he was. That is when he told me his name was James Parker, with his heavy Indian accent. At that point I hung up. Afterwards I asked a few friends who are computer savy and they said that was a scam of some sort. They told me to google the number they gave me which was 1-800-698-9034. That is when I discovered all of your comments. Its clear to me now that they want to infect your computer with a virus and then have you pay them to get it fixed.

Just got off the phone with these guys a few minutes ago. I wish I'd thought to google them while on the phone so I coulda messed with him directly, but oh well.

They gave me the name of "Support On Click" (the first result for which on Google is titled "Update on Support On Click ? Police alert to Scam" in regards to an Australian police investigation) after asking several times. Maybe the first guy did give me that name, I couldn't be sure. The connection was so bad and their English so poor and their Indian(?) accents so thick, I couldn't tell. I assumed the bad connection was my own phone, until reading these.

They had me check the Event Viewer by right-clicking on "My Computer" and selecting "Manage" (something I'd never done before and actually find interesting, to their credit, I suppose). As soon as I confirmed that, yes, I did see a few error notes in the logs there (my firewall program has been on life-support lately and has taken to flatlining as soon as the computer is started), the first guy passes me off to his "supervisor". The first thing the guy tells me is that they're going to use remote desktop to fix the problem from their end. That immediately made my hackles rise.

"Wait, you want me to give access to my computer to someone that I don't know, who is in a location I don't know, to do something they refuse to explain to me in order to fix a problem that you've already stated I wouldn't even be aware of, nor will you just give me directions so that I can do it rather than your "IT person", and I'm supposed to be comfortable with this?"
"Well, sir, as you know, we're in the twenty first century now, and all businesses do things this way. This is very standard."
It's common in the business world for a corporation to give over total control of their computers to unidentified callers that call out of the blue? I thought. Yeah, I don't think so.

At that point he started playing hardball, trying to convince me that they had plenty of other customers that they might be helping in the meantime, so if I didn't think that what they had to offer would be of any help, they would be happy to end the conversation and go on to the next customer. I politely told him that I'd look into it and call them back if I thought I might get some use from their product. He gave me their phone number (this one), their company name again, and his name of James Farker(?).

i was suspicious so i googled the 800 number. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE!
windows wouldn't call every single one of their customers to report an issue like this, they don't have the time, money, or manpower. if there was an issue with your computer Microsoft would notify you electronically.

Got a call from this company tonight around dinner time. The man had a thick foreign accent and asked to speak to the authorized computer user. I asked him which computer was he referring to and he was vague. He said to log on to the computer, that it was a necessary "computer to check" to fix a Windows bug. I asked for his phone number and it sounded like he hung up, then he came back on the line and gave me this number and said to ask for "Hamas". I told my mom about it and she found about a scam where the company tries to gain remote access to your computer so they can get your credit card info, etc. I wish they would publicize this scam because I have gotten calls from legitimate computer tech support companies. I almost fell for it since the legit ones are usually from Indian sounding people.

The guy who called my wife states that he works for Windows and tells you, you just down loaded a virus. He persisted when my son wouldn?t give him remote access to our computers. My wife told him she had some questions for him, he stated I don?t have time for questions. She then got in an argument with him that went to yelling on the phone. She and my kids hung up on him several times. He ended up calling 9 times before he gave up. He claimed to be Patrick Jones gave a phone number of 1-800-698-9034. And a web site supportonclick.com. I called the number and they answer supportonclick.com I asked them where they are located, He stated India. It is my best guess that his real name isn?t Patrick Jones.

Same here. "Robert WIlliams" with a very very heavy Indian accent, from the "tech support department". I do tech support myself and I knew it was a scam right off, but I could see how non-tech folks could be scammed. Eventually transferred me to his "Microsoft certified supervisor" named "Tim". Accent still bad, but not as bad as the first guy. Asked him what city he was born in, and he admitted he was calling from India. (Could be Pakistan or Bangladesh or something -- I wouldn't know.) Got tired of playing with the guy and asked for a callback number (so I could report him to the "do not call" folks"). Number he gave was 1-800-698-9034.

For non-technical people reading this: the "event viewer" in Windows will ALWAYS show errors and warnings. That's because Windows just barely works, even fresh from Microsoft. It DOESN'T mean there is anything wrong with your computer. Use a router, and an anti-virus program, and keep Windows Firewall turned on. And NEVER let anyone mess with your computer unless you chose them.
