I have gotten 6 calls from this number in the past 3 weeks -- I have never picked up and they have never left a message.  I'm sure they are waiting for me to get so frustrated I will pick up, but it isn't going to happen.  Very annoying.  I read a thread that said this number belongs to "New England College" which I have no connection to.

Called, did not pick up, did not leave a message. Also called the ten year old I baby-sit for. She answered, the caller identified himself as David something or other, and she hung up upon realizing she didn't know him.

This 800-number has called twice this week. I have "missed" both calls, in part because I do not answer numbers I don't recognize. No message is left - which suggests to me that it isn't legit. Besides, my alma maters do not use outside parties for solicitations.

The company is Ruffalo CODY who I used to work for who does calls to Alumni, past donors, parents, and current students of colleges looking for donations towards financial aide. Everything they are doing is completely legal even if your on a do not call list because they are a non-profit. If you have nothing to do with the college then somehow they got the wrong number and you should tell them that. If you don't pick up the phone then they will keep calling. So pick up the phone, make a donation or ask to be taken off their list and you will stop receiving calls. And be nice because they are just poor college students trying to make some money.

Received call from 1-800-707-4863.  I was screening calls, no message left.  I dialed the number and a recorded message (woman's voice) said it was "phonathon" and asked me to leave my name/number.  I have been on the no-call list since 2003 and I suspect this was NOT legitimate.  Very annoying.

I have been getting calls from numbers that I don't know in the last two weeks, and this is one of them.  I don't pick up, I usually screen through voicemail, and they never leave one.  When I called, I got something about a "phone-a-thon".

This number has called me about 5 times in the last 2 weeks. I just came back and saw a missed call on my cell phone so I called it back this time and it says it is "Phone-a-thon" and had me leave my name and my phone number. I said "This is Justin and you have called me around 5 times in the last couple of weeks. I want you to know that you call my cellular phone and it is illegal to solicit me on a cell phone according to law so please remove me from whatever list you are calling me from. Thanks." Let's hope it works!

I received 2 calls tonight where they hung up on my machine.  I called back just now and it says "Welcome to the Phonathon."

Never answered the phone because there was no identification.  I wonder if this is some type of clearing house for college donations, because I have been gettng tons of solicitations from my husband's alma mater, which both my children presently attend.  My feeling is that we are ALREADY making hefty donations; no donations unless they are immediately applied to my children's bills!

This number has called numerous times.  Times for phone calls vary but usually before 8am or after 9pm

I keep getting calls from these guys too. I'm originally from New England and went to college there as well.

I believe it is Excelsior College. They have been calling my cell #, but have not, as of yet, left a message. I am a graduate of Excelsior, which is a legitimate school, so I'm fairly confident that they're calling to solicit donations.

I got a phone call and did not pick up. But I would not have minded contributing to a local parish even though I  am not catholic. Catholics are an odd group, why criticize a parish that is there to help with eternity and squabble over what you didn't get to do?  Any who they did not leave a message. Being Protestant, I couldn't afford to send my child to the private schools either, but I feel my kids were blessed with a church education and one they saw at home.

my alma mater doesn't have my phone number and does not have permission to call me. i'm on the donotcall list, so i went to donotcall.gov, clicked "file a complaint" on the left, and complained. if everyone in this thread had done this, this company would be fined into the stoneage by now. the messages from this company left in this thread saying they are a non profit soliciting $ from your alma mater may or may not be true, but my alma mater doesn't have my # because i never gave it to them and they don't have permisssion to give my number out even if they got my # from somewhere.most people in this thread are being solicited by name for schools they did not attend so i suspect this is company has bad mojo.

Got called tonite.  The guy said he was calling from the PCOM(my alma mater) student scholarship fund.  I have donated to them for the better part of 20 years.  This time I used a credit card(dumb, I know!).  A woman called back 5 minutes later to tell me it "wouldn't go through" and to confirm my information.  I confirmed -- She tried again -- Still no luck.  They are mailing me a pledge card.  I then called my credit card company.  There was no evidence of any attempt to put my numbers through.  I'm praying this is NOT a scam and that I receive the pledge card in the mail.  I called the number back and kept getting voice mail.  I left a message with my name and told them that I reported them to my credit card company and that they had best not use my card.  I asked them to call me back to let me know that they would not be using my card.  I said I'd cancel my card and report them to the police.

When I was a poor college student, I VOLUNTEERED to make these calls for my school.  If these are really students trying to make a living, why not tell the TRUTH.  I asked "Jason" if he was a student(I assumed at my college), and he said 2nd year.  But looking back, the REAL students from my college were WAT friendlier and more relaxed.  I guess this was a "life experience"...Thanks for reading my rant  :-)

It just occurred to me that, whoever it is, they might be a scam.  We have had a rash of these 'fund-raising' phone calls in my area, for several years.  They start and end in a matter of weeks, before the police catch up with them.  They were asking for 'donations' for the local police force!  And they were certainly denounced by the local police (for several years, like I said!) so I would tell whoever calls you that  1)  YOu never donate to an unsolicited caller and 2)  if you want to donate, you'll call (whoever the school, police force, children's kindergarten jungle gym committee, whatever), directly.  And followup!

Having read a bunch of the responses, I think this is Ruffalo Cody, or some other fund-raising outfit.  I think they are probably non-profit (I'm on the Do Not Call List, also) and I think they hire out to any college that pays them to organize it.  It's really annoying.  But, like trying to protect yourself from such, as NOT listing your phone number, the phone companies make you pay for your privacy;  yes, there is a way to stop these people:  you can pay an added fee to your phone company (altho mine, Fairpoint, allows you to list several numbers you can block, for free).  Ain't it awful to have to PAY for your privacy/peace of mind?

Just received one from this number today on my phone that only close family have the number. No message was left.

If any of you are graduates of or attended the University of Maine, this may be why this number is calling you. My husband got this call recently but since he was not home I had to ask them to call back. They are doing one of two things.

1. They are checking to make sure that their contact information is correct, after which they generally try to sell you an updated directory.

2. They may be conducting an alumni/alumnae fund raising drive.

This same number may be used by a large number of schools who are fund raising and hiring a telemarketing firm to contact graduates.

They literally just called. They hung up on my machine. I'm on the DO NOT CALL list. Talk about annoying!

It's a telemarketing firm hired by small colleges to collect alumni donations.  While I understand that this a firm, and not my actual college itself, that called me, I was polite and I donate every year anyway (because I don't think my tuition and subsequent student loans that my grandkids will be paying off was quite enough...)

Have received this call several times this week.  They NEVER leave a message, but have called numerous times!  Who are they?

I've gotten one call from this number every day for at least two weeks. I haven't answered, and it's starting to push me over the edge. I'm heading off to college in a year, so that may be how they got my number, but they need to seriously back off.
