I have been getting harrassing phone calls offering to lower my interest rate on my home mortgage and my credit cards for the past 4 or 5 months - when I ask them who they are, they hang up; when I ask to call them back (for their phone number), they hang up; when I pretend to be interested and give them a credit card number, they have asked for the expiration date to accompany the credit card number - which I refuse to give them, then I get passed to the "manager" who also says he NEEDS my expiration date for the credit card I've given him, and when I refuse, they hang up.  But, they continue to call me.  They are calling my cell phone and they call from every area code in the country (according to the caller ID that is).  I have been unable to determine WHO this is that is calling me all the time - 2 to 3 times per day, each and every day.  Recently, we received a piece of mail with the same general rhetoric - talking about our mortgage and what we need to do "as soon as possible, before our time runs out.  The mail is somewhat generic - the Company is called Paramount Equity Mortgage - Refinance Department  - 888-758-7795.  I called and have asked for them to remove us from their mailing and phone list.  The woman said the phone section is separate from the mail, but she took all phone numbers we are being harrassed on, and she agreed she would e-mail her manager with our request.  I am passing this on in case you are getting the same annoying phone calls 2-3 times a day.  You never start with a live person, it's always a recording, then you have to press a number to be connected.  Half the time the call cuts off at that point.  Very VERY annoying - we don't even have a mortgage!  Their information is OLD.  I feel badly for the people that have to do this for a living, but I'm so tired of the annoyances this company is dispersing throughout America.   Hopefully this helps someone else!  I've been trying to solve this "riddle" for months!

They called about my husbands Ex-girlfriend from 5 years ago!!  I called them back and the phone range a bunch but I waited until a man answered and said Hello!  Thats it!  and then asked if he could call me back on the same number in a few minutes.  He called back from the number 201-210-3618 and said he had no clue what I was talking about and asked me for more information about myself.  He was very rude!

I received a call from this number and was asked to contact a neighbor who lives
above me and notify them that they should call this number. The caller gave me the name of the person and I am sure that if that person might have lived in the apartment above me at one time, they no longer live there as several families have moved in and left within the last two years. I am sure the caller
works for a collection agency and are trying to locate people who owe some business money and this agency doesn't know the current address of these people and are calling neighbors in an attempt to locate them. I suggest that if they call you again, use the most vile language you can come up with and insult them to the point that they hang up. They wont call you back again for sure.

This is a collection agency, that threatens you with calling your neighbors and friends.  They all sound like they are from India.  Report them to the police, and write them a letter not to call.  Check out the Federal Trade Commission's website on ways to stop harrassment.

You f**k**ng a**hole! How dare you presume to know anything about the lives of people being harassed by bottom feeders?? Not all people who owe money have a job or have lost a job through their own fault or can find a job even with 2 Master's degrees, you idiotic brain-dead moron!! Some of us are barely even surviving on Unemployment and have lost everything due to the economy, and you want to put us in prison because we can pay debts other than our bare-minimum living expenses??? I hope you lose your job, if you even have one, and see what it's like, fool!! And no one deserves to be harassed 7 days a week as much as 10 times a day by lowlife bill collectors, esp Indian morons who can't even speak English and are just a bunch of scam artists calling the wrong number or trying to collect on old debt that isn't even collectible. Why should we be harassed on a daily basis because we don't have a job or income that will allow us to do more than pay rent on a slumhole apartment and buy a little food and try to support our family???????? You're probably a scam artist debt collector yourself, trolling this website for more victims. Burn in hell and all others like you!!

Not all people who owe debts have a job and not all people who are harassed by bottom-feeding debt collectors have just decided one day not to pay their debts! We're not all deadbeats! Some of us are barely surviving on the little we get from Unemployment and when those extensions end, that we have to fight tooth and nail to get, we have nothing, nothing, nothing!! Especially if you live in a city that has a severely depressed economy, even with several college degrees and a marketable background, there are no jobs - duh, no jobs no money to pay past debts, you idiot.  Open your eyes and see how the rest of us live before criticizing people whose lives you know nothing about - you sanctimonious, clueless moron!!!!!!!

There is no law prohibiting them from calling you on weekends...but there IS a law prohibiting them from harassing non-debtors. Tell them the next time they call you intend to sue them for TCPA violations if the calls don't stop.

The average consumer debt collector employee places 200 collection calls per day or 50,000 calls per year!  How do they make so many calls?  Most use a technology known as autodialing, even though the use of an autodialer by a collector often violates the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).

The penalty for violating the TCPA is HUGE ? Every illegal phone call carries with it a $500 penalty, and if the collector knows he is violating the Act, the penalty is tripled!

As the name implies, an auto-dialer is a sophisticated computer system that constantly and continuously dials numbers on collection accounts.  When someone answers the phone, the computer immediately delivers the call to a collector, and the account pops up on the collector?s monitor.  So, if you are behind in your bills, you (and your family and your employer) are getting calls from your debt collectors ? a lot of calls!

Not every call using an autodialer is illegal.  Most notably, a consumer debt collector can call a debtor at home using an autodialer.  However, the following two acts violate the TCPA if an autodialer is used:

Making a collection call to a cell phone belonging to the debtor or any third party
Making a collection call to any telephone number not belonging to the debtor

Like every rule, there is an exception.  If the debt collector has the prior written consent of the recipient, then there is NO VIOLATION.  For instance, if the debtor gives the debt collector permission to call his cell number, or if that?s the only number the debtor provided his creditor, there is no violation.  However, the debtor can revoke that consent by advising the collector that he has reached a cell phone and that he does not have permission to call that number again.

TCPA violations often occur when consumer collectors contact the debtor?s family members or coworker looking for the debtor.  If an autodialer is used to place the call, there is an immediate violation of $500.  If the collector KNOWS that the number he is dialing belongs to debtor?s family members or coworker, the fine is $1,500 for a single call.  So, if the debtor?s parents get 100 calls from a harassing collector, the statutory fine is as high as $150,000!

How do you know if an autodialer is being used to make calls to you or your friends, family and coworkers?  You don?t, but it is safe to assume that every collection call is using the technology.  An attorney familiar with the TCPA can subpoena the collection agency and acquire account notes generated by the computer system.

Why would a collection agency employ a technology that exposes the agency to huge civil penalties?  The enormous profits generated by autodialing far outweigh the potential penalty when caught.  In other words, it is just the cost of doing business.

This agency is horrible. They call at 8:00 am on Saturdays and Sundays !!!. They have been calling me for THREE YEARS asking for wither Mikah or Natasha Morgan. They switch these two names every few months. I asked them tens of times to stop bothering me with stupid questions necause I've no idea who these people are. This agency is a waste of time and energy resources. They have no idea who they are calling. They do not even bother to check the latest white pages databese to see possess the number they are using. And doing so for THREE YEARS is outrageous. The people they are looking for might be dead by now, imprisoned or out of country. Why do not they use a detective agency to be efficient ???
Who is paying tp support them ?
I would care less if they did not wake me up on Saturday and Sunday morning. There must be A LAW prohibiting such call on weekends.

Ok, here goes...

About a week ago, I started getting Indian accented messages on my home voice mail.  I don't really check it much since i mostly use a cell phone.  I just keep the home phone around for ordering pizzas and... well not much else really...jeez why do i still even have that thing?  uh..right so..anyway...what I can make out is that Nathan from Aegis (sp?) receivables wants me to call 1-800-363-4816 to discuss a matter regarding American Express.  So I called...

Nathan wasn't around, so I spoke with Alex.  He was nice at first...but his mood soon deteriorated.  I told said "Hi, I'm the guy from the number you called, what is this about a matter with American Express?"  He said there is an uncollected debt I  must pay.  "Impossible", I exclaim.  "My credit is flawless, and I check my credit report often.  Like it's my hobby!".  He asked me for my Date of Birth.  I refused.  I asked him what date of birth he shows.  Does not match.  He asked for last 4 digits of my soc.  I refuse.  Does not match.

"OK, so you obviously have the wrong person with the same name.  Please take me off your list."  He say's he can't do that.  "Why", I ask?  He says "because you are the person at this phone number."  The complete break in logic just silenced me. "Huh?" my head spinning.  "Your name matches this phone number, so you must pay!" he replied.  I snapped back "But...I'm not even the same person!!"

He tells me if i do not agree, that I must send a fax with my name and address to dispute the claim.  I refuse.  I don't have a fax machine and I'm not going out of my way for these people either.  "This call shall serve as my request to be taken off your list." I hiss.  He then proceeds to tell me that if i don't know how to work a fax machine, i should have someone show me.  The exchange at that point got heated.
I told him I'll contact American Express to sort this out.

He wished me luck...and says they will continue to call me.  (and they do).

I called American Express, Filed a dispute report,  gave them Aegis' phone number, and was assured by AmEx that I'm in the clear and they will handle everything.  I sure hope so.

Oh..my phone just started ringing.  Damn, it's India.

Recorded calls from 866-398-4399 very early in the morning & late in the evening (I live in the EST time zone).  Heavily accented voice, saying they'd called several times & had never received a response.  I finally called from a different phone asking who this company was & what they did.  Talked to an Indian gentleman -- wouldn't give me his name.  Very rude, hung up on me after I asked 3 different times what they did & was given 3 different answers.

Upon googling, I found this:  http://www.aegisglobal.com/section_level2.aspx?cont_id=QKlu5QBggj4=

Check out the contact info -- it's all overseas.  No American numbers.

An employee by the name of "Austin" keeps calling my cellular number, demanding payment for a credit account which was already closed.  I have told Mr. "Austin" to stop calling me.  This "Austin" calls me every day, about 5 - 10 times a day.  I told Mr. "Austin" that any communication with me should be done in writing.  I even asked to speak to his supervisor.  No supervisor made himself available to speak to me regarding his rude empoyee.

i think all those people who dont pay their bills give these kind of lame excuses.there is no data fudging in collection companies.the payments are heighly secured.the person authorises the co. to take out money on a recorded line...so there cant be any fraud.my suggestion to all those people who are harrased by collection companies is that"sir/mam plz pay your bills on time"

I'm getting these calls.

I have really old debts which are "charged off"; counting the chargeoff and statute of limitations, these debts are both zero and 9 years UNCOLLECTABLE and UNENFORCEABLE.  Oh, and AEGIS is NOT the ORIGINAL CREDITOR: that means these people can be DISCHARGED.

Read about this on www.bendover.com or www.budhibbs.com.

I recommend that anybody that uses this information check it out w/ legal counsel.  And be sure that your debts are NOT accessbile by legitimate agencies.  [Although I'm not sure there are any legit agencies.]

OK, that said: what 2 do?  Call these folks and talk nicely to them.  Then tell the agent about these web sites.   Underpaid and smart operators will grasp what they can do with this information.

After you have done this at least 4 or 5 times, you can talk to a supervisor and tell him what you have done and TO STOP CALLING YOU ...
or not!!!

Eventually they will have to REALLY monitor every call :)

Frankly, there are 'bottom-feeders' out there that buy old, worthless paper and collect some of it.  I fell for it once and then investigated.

This is another one of those financial 'house-of-cards' things that could collapse.  But this one deserves too :)
