This is a legitimate number with Citi Fraud dept. If you don't have an account with Citi then it's probably someone else trying to open a credit line in your name. Remember that with today's technology it is easy to spoof (mask) the number someone is calling from and change the number you see on caller ID. If they ask for personal information (e.g. DOB, ss#) immediately hang up, this is not bankcard best practices. It is always good practice to call the CS# on the back of your card just to be on the safe side.

Fraud scheme!

The caller alerts you to charges on a card you likely do not have. They then ask you to confirm things like the last 4 digits of your SSN, ask you for your DOB, etc. TELL THEM NOTHING!
The caller then tells you the number to call for fraud is 800-825-0393.

Instead, I went to Citibank's website and used their online chat. Found out 800-825-0393 is NOT among their phone numbers. The Citibank chat person gave me another number to call (800-950-5114). Typical automated phone tree, but I finally reached a live person, who also confirmed that number is NOT part of Citibank.

Don't fall for it!

I received a message about possible fraud and was told to call 800-825-0393. Instead of calling that number, I called the 888 number on the back of my card. The person I spoke with said there was no note of a call to me and that the 800 number was not theirs.

I just confirmed that the number is not a scam, a fraud ring has my info and tried to open a card in my name.  Called the number on the Citibank website and was redirected to 800-825-0393.

NOT a scam.  I signed up for a new Citi Forward card, and the day I got my acceptance letter I got this call.  I thought it was strange to get a fraud call before I even got and activated the card.  They call you to confirm you are actually the person that signed up for the card. I was skeptical and did a Google search which ended me up here. I still called the main citi number to be safe and that gets you routed to citi fraud detection in Florida.  Incoming call shows up from 904-954-7500 on my cell and they tell you to call 800-825-0393.  I called the number from citi's website to confirm this and it is a citi number.

That number is NOT a scam. Whoever said that is misinformed. It IS citi fraud dept. I just called number on back of card, referenced that number, and they confirmed this.

I just received a call in my voicemail from a different number telling me to call this 800 number and was not sure if it was a fraud. I have not received my card yet and thus have no number to call--is it a fraud?

We received a message on our machine from the "Citibank Fraud dept. They could not find our account, and asked for our SS number. It was a scam, do not give them any info. If you give them your card number, cancel the card!

I just got a call from someone at Citi who said they needed to talk to me about my credit card account (which I'd just activated and used for the first time today). They left the number 1-800-825-0393 and asked me to call them back. This number was not listed anywhere on their website or on my card, so I called the number on the back of my card and asked them if the 1-800-825-0393 number was a legitimate Citi number. The woman assured me that it was, but she said that when people call that number, they route the callers over to department that you get when you call the number on the back of your card. Why they use the 825-0393 number without listing it on the card or website is beyond me; I would just call the number on the back of your card to be safe.

I received a voicemail from this number, saying I needed to call on my new card because they suspected fraud. I was using the card on a trip out of state. Although they left the message on my cell phone, they would not approve reactivation of my card unless I answered my home phone. I reminded them this would be impossible as I was out of state, on a trip (which is what prompted suspicion of my card in the first place). They took all my information, social security, passwords, and after all receiving this, denied reactivation of my card, because of the out of state charges, and because I was not at home to answer my home phone! It was entirely irrational. However, there was no fraud. When I called the number on the back of my card, they confirmed this 800 number is part of their business.
The person who answered at the number on the back of my card was much more cooperative than the people at this 800 number, although for all I know, thye're in the same office. I'm on the phone with the more cooperative person now, in hour three of this saga, but I believe it is getting handled. At least someone is making an effort.
In conclusion, this number is not a fraud. But do call the number on the back of your card, never a number someone leaves you on a voicemail. Because next time, it very well could be fraud. Good luck!

I got the 1-800-825-0393 number from a caller who was trying to scam me. He told me it was Citibank's fraud department. I called it and they tried to get my SS#. I refused. I then Called Citibank using the 800 number on the back of a friends card. I told them what had happened and asked them if 1-800-825-0393 was one of their phone numbers. Citibank said it wasn't one of their numbers. I would not trust that number. According to the attorney general's office and Citibank there is a scam going on right now and they are using Citibank's name to get card numbers and SS#.

Also, my card had been declined later that day after they called (before I called back), so I really doubt its a scam.

I received a call from this number.  Gave them info that I wasn't sure they needed to know, realized after I hung up, then called number on back of Citi Forward card.  They confirmed that they had called me.  Also, the woman at 1-800-825-0393 read me back a list of my charges.

same number - call on Monday when I called last Friday to get a new card sent to me (replacement).

They had originally sent me a letter stating they were closing my account a few weeks ago due to inactivity but I decided to do a balance transfer and keep the card (therefore needing a new card) since I shredded the old one.

Either they keep loosing the replacement card in the mail (done this twice now) or they don't want me to get a new card with them.  Weird.

I agree - NEVER call the number they leave - call the one on the card (or in my case - website).

I will second this.  I got a message in my voice mail box and I was asked to call this number right after I asked for a replacement card from Citibank.

It might be (I say might be) a scam.

A rule of thumb is always call your credit card issuer with the number printed on the credit card and never answer/call any unknown number and tell them your credit card number.
