Update My card keeps getting denied trying to get reinstated. Even though it was american express error . They refuse to correct the credit report. Even though months have passed and my credit has somewhat rebounded.  They go back to the time of their mistake and presto turn my down again. This I'd an unfair business practice.  My 30 year credit history only blemish is due to the American express failure in customer service.

Costco acct  ending #01003,  Hilton honors #80001.

I will be registering this complaint with the appropriate agencies also.

We switched from Hilton honors the the Costco card. First error. We were told that the Hilton honors card was to be turned off immediately. We thought  that was true, because we lost all visibility on the Hilton card. No final bill in mail, no visibility on line, nothing.   Turns out there was 2 Dish bills due and we had had not visibility on these 2 charges totaling $160.01 .  Dish network show the bill being paid by Costco card #101003 We continued to use the Costco card paying it off  ,as usual,in full monthly as is our custom blissfully unaware of any issues with the Hilton card.

Here is where I get disturbed and have real issues with American Express and their treatment of the problem with me.  How did we become aware of these unknown charges? We received a phone call TWO days AFTER they  turned both cards. This was the first communication we received from American express that there was a problem with  our account. When I called and talked to someone with a heavy foreign accent,  he told me that they have been sending statements to the address of record. I told then since we switched to Costco, no bills were received  to the address of record for the Hilton honors card  just for the  Costco card which by the way we received at the same address of record as the Hilton card. American express  said this could not have happened. This became a theme in my many communications with American Express, that I was being less than truthful about this matter. This distrust of my word, continued even after I told them that I paid the Costco card because we received regular statements. He said he would resend them.  I believe there is a glitch on the process on American Express  side once they turn off a card.

We immediately  paid the outstanding balance on the Hilton card by phone, but I  refused to pay the interest and late fees because I  truly  believe that we were not at fault here. It?s a fault in your process.  After another set of phone calls , a person who listened to my  side reversed the late fees and interest. we did not talk about APR probably increasing due to American Express error. He also told me to call in a couple of days to get my card reinstated or at least advocate in my behalf.  That did not happen.

Adding  another insult was when I  called back, I basically had to give my  personal information again like I was reapplying for my card. So  I  chose to  reinstate the Hilton card. This process could 7 to 10 business days and if I am not approved for reinstatement,  then another 7-10 days for new card. My position since this was not my mistake, why am I being punished like this--- by not immediately reinstating my  card?  I believe American Express is subtly saying that I am still the one at fault. A very unbending position, in my opinion.

I have been treated poorly , as a criminal throughout this process. I believe that your company treats everyone with issues this way and that distresses me. It has been humbling and eye opening experience dealing with this American Express.

In reading what experiences others have had when problems arise with your company, I will add my  voice to theirs in the dissatisfaction of my treatment by  American Express in this issue.

PS still have not received  the promised statements from the Hilton card as of  August 1,2013 9pm MST or any other communication for that matter, I think the policy of having no email  complaint system, suits American Express business model of no customer service.

It was a call from American Express telling me that they reduced my credit limit by $1,500. So now I only have a credit limit of $500. Though I have a good credit report with no dings or lates with anyone on my report along with having a 720+ FICO score, I was surprised that American Express has savagely reduced my credit limit so severely.

Obviously a scam. I was given this number to call & to have my credit card ready. I didn't return the call. But they already have the last several numbers. Are they looking for the rest? How did they get the numbers?

I updated my Amazon acct. over the weekend to add this card & purched with it.

I was called from this number two months after Bank of America decreased my credit card by $10,000.  No late payments, no skipped payments, credit score over 700, with a balance under half the amount of my credit line.  I'm guessing they want to do the same thing with absolutely no justification.  I'll wait it out.

I just got two calls from that number with no message left. My last bill I sent them $500 when my minimum was $50. Then they reduced my limit immediately after. NOt really sure whats going on but I've been a member for over ten years and my credit score is 765. As soon as my balance is paid off I'm getting my rewards and then closing the account.

Just got a call from AMEX.  Reduced my credit from $10K to under $4K.  Checked the website and it said I was about $100 from my credit limit.  Sent a big payment immediately to be safe.  Don't know if I should pay it off and cancel.  Would've been nice to get some warning.  Some of these people got dropped so low that they were over their credit limit.  What's up with that?!  I only spend if I feel safe with my credit card, and I don't think that anymore.

Same here.  They reduced my credit limit to within $300 of my limit.  Have a 738 credit score and always pay my bills.  I'm now left scrambling.  Really makes you feel good that AMEX got some of those TARP funds (i.e. your tax dollars) to float their fat a$$es.  I emailed my senator about this whole financial mess they've created.  Everyone here should do the same.  No credit card company should be able to drastically lower a members limit without clear cause (missed payments, substantial drop in credit rating, etc.).  Espectially one that took our tax money.  Absolute BS!

800-842-5303 showed up on my caller ID as "unavailable" and there was a recorded message on my answering machine to call AmEx for something like important news about my account.  Well, earlier in the day I'd already received an e-mail telling me they were loweing my credit limit.  I didn't need to be told the same bad news twice in one day.  Then a couple days later I received a snail mail letter telling me the same thing.  I guess AmEx was covering all bases.

They sure did lower it. Amex you silly b*****ds. They make so much money as it is, its hard to see how a 750 fico score can be "risky". Oh wait, maybe its because I pay my bill on time, always more than the minimum. Or maybe its because I've been a customer for over 5 years. Credit Card companies do whatever they want when they want. But I called in just to see if I could dispute it. Instead I was redirected to Experian to see if they made a mistake. Turns out they didn't. I had a high balance 2,500 on a 5,500 dollar card. So that balance gives them the right to cut my credit limit three fold. 10,000>3,500

One thing I've learned is that, if you play by the rules, you will always lose because the rules always change!

Dear DT:

We are contacting you to be sure you do not have any surprises when you use your card.  In this difficult economic environment, we all need to make choices about how we spend and save.  For us, that means carefully reviewing the spending and debt profiles of our Cardmembers - and making some difficult decisions.  Unfortunately, we have had to make the decision to lower the credit limit on your account listed above.

Your revised credit limit for purchases is now $33,700.00.  The new cash advance limit is $200.00.  Please ensure that any additional Cardmembers on the account are also aware of this change so they do not have any negative experiences when they use the Card.

You will also receive this information by letter, but we wanted to be sure you were aware of this change as soon as possible.  We strive to be a responsible lender during both prosperous times and more challenging ones, and we do remain committed to our relationship with you.

Sincerely,

This is the second time AMEX has done this.  What I did was put my entire mortgage ($56k) onto this Clear card that had a 3.99% APR fixed for life.  For obvious reasons, I choose to pay the minimum on this card each month (2%) of balance.  Well, I guess that makes AMEX angry so they are lowering the limit as I pay it down.  Oh well, I used them for almost free money so I guess I can't get too upset.  I know I won't be a future AMEX cardholder though.

If you pay them "not one penny over the minimum until it is paid off," you're giving them their best possible scenario.  They're going to make a killing on you.  If you want to screw them, pay off the entire balance at once, so they don't get any interest from you, and then never use the card again, so they don't get any more processing fees from your purchases.

I have had AMEX reduce my balance from 20,000 to 13,200 a few months ago and today they dropped my limit from 13,200 to 11,700 with no notice.  I received a message today and you guessed it they wanted me to call a 1-800# and put in my card number...no way no how, do they think we are stupid!  So, I went online and checked my limit and they had dropped it overnight and told me no charges would be approved!  I am not going to pay them 1 penny over the minimum until it is paid off.  Screw you AMEX!!!!!!  Maybe this is good for America, no more credit cards!  How do you like that, no more fees from us or the merchants.  AMEX I hope you go bankrupt like you are bankrupting small businesses in this country!!!!

American Express - called to notify me of a credit limit decrease.  Originally had $15K available on my personal account and $20K on my business account, now only $1K.  Operator stated the reason for my decrease was due to my current debt-to-credit ratio, which is due in part to business operations carrying a balance while another bank decreased by limits.  Oh well - ftw.

American Express is contributing to the death of small business in America. I just paid them $4,000 on my $10,000 limit, and in return, they lowered my limit, you guessed it, $4,000.

So now, when I need to buy supplies for my business, what do I do? Can someone tell me that? I've acted in good faith with AmEx and now...my faith will cause me to go bankrupt.

Screw you, American Express.

I had a voicemail to return call to this number..I was suspect of fraud and when I found the comments here I didn't even bother to call back.  AMEX a few months ago reduced me from a 20K limit to 8K.  I have since kept balance down low, paid almost off every month, you know...charging and paying, like you're suppose to do!  Went online to find that my limit was reduced to $1500!!! No reason, and obviously they are doing this to lots of others.  I won't close the acct due to comments by other that it can hurt your credit, but I have taken the card out of my wallet and will pay off the small balance I have and have nothing to do with AMEX again!!!!

I had that happen about a year ago with a company claiming to be Chase.  I verified my information and it turned out to be a scam.  My card was maxed out in the next few days.  It took almost two months to get it all cleared up.  So, when I got a message yesterday from a company claiming to me AmEx, I called them back.  But, I wouldn't give the lady any information.  I said to her, "If you are who you say you are, then you already have all of this info.  I've been through my card number being stolen, so I don't feel comfortable giving you any information."  She said she understood and suggested I call the number on the back of my card, instead.

Just to note, there is a problem with their automated dialer. If they call you and dont leave a V-Mail, then its probably nothing. I went ahead and called Amex's number, and they verified the number was theirs and that it had mistakenly called me. Just call the number on back of CC, tell them the number called you and they can check for you (If your paranoid). If they do try to reduce your limit, do a little research, you can fight it. But DONT CLOSE YOUR CARDS. IT WILL HURT YOUR FICO MORE THAN IF THEY ARE OPEN WITH LOW CREDIT LIMIT.
