Due to violations of multiple Oregon laws, the state Department of Consumer and Business Services fined an online payday lender $10,000. According to DCBS, E-payday-loan violated laws such as charging too steep an interest rate, making or renewing a payday loan for a term of fewer than 31 days, and refusing the state department access its records. The company is based in Utah and is not licensed to provide loans to residents of Oregon. In Oregon, payday lenders are not permitted to charge more than 36 percent interest annually. However, one consumer of E-payday-loan ended up with an equivalent of an 842 percent APR on a $350 loan. DCBS spokeswoman Lisa Morawski said, "There's no guarantee that they're going to follow the law and treat consumers fairly."
