Caller advised they're from CRA Collections (home based business) and they wanted to speak with me about my account.   Yet, need to confirm private info. we're not suppose to provide to unsolicited calls.  I asked for information on my business to confirm they're legit and they claimed privacy.  So we both have doubts on each end, but CRA calls me.  

We always pay our invoices on time, so I checked my statements and it might be due to an outstanding year end return.   Wasted 25 mins arguing about providing private information if they simply advised our return was late.

I got the same call from CRA dealing with GST and they read back more of my information than I gave them. I did wonder about it mostly because the call display showed it was from the United States, must be a cheaper 800 number. I rejected and blocked the number at first as a telemarketer. Should our government be contracting to a US company....hmmmm

This number is legit.  

I got the same call and I thought it was collection but I forgot that I had a business account and I was working from home. I did my tax but I guess I didn't do the GST account and I wasn't aware so they resend me the form to finish my tax return......Glad I called bck lol if it wasn't for this sit!!!! Helped me a lot. I find it strange that this is suppose to be a legitimate CRA number since when I called them back I got a voice message saying the number dialled is in unavailable in my area and yet I phoned from the office where the business is registered

The telephone number IS Canada Revenue Agency (which can easily be authenticated!). It is the line used by their collections department.

I was called over and over again..from another gov.number last digits 1961 I think..they never left a message. Then when I finally picked it up and hung up on them they left a message... to call back this number 1 800 959 2765.
It is legit. Revenue canada gst. I had registered for a  gst number and never used it. They were looking for a return. I deregistered the account.
I guess since some people owe them big money..why they do not leave a message.

I received a call from this number earlier today. Thinking it may be a scam, I called the CRA at the number listed on their website for business inquiries (as the voicemail left asking me to call back 1-800-959-2765 was asking about a late business tax return). I was told that the CRA owns hundreds of numbers and most number combinations starting in 1-800-959 are theirs. I was also told that this number in particular does belong to the CRA and that they do sometimes issue phone calls regarding late payments. This is NOT a scam.

It is Canada Revenue Agency collection department.

Apparently, the CRA sometimes WILL ask for your personal information over the phone, for "security purposes".  I confirmed that "Ross" above is right.

I got a call from 1-800-959-2765.  The woman said she was calling from the Canada Revenue Agency, which didn't sound quite right -- wasn't it called something else the last time I checked?  When she asked me to confirm my address for security purposes, I said I wasn't comfortable talking to her, since I didn't know who she was.  She told me to call 1-800-O-CANADA  (1-800-672-6232).  She also gave me my GST # correctly, which was a good sign.  I called 1-800-O-CANADA, and they gave me the standard GST business inquiries number first (1-800-959-5525), and then when I asked for GST Collections, the operator didn't give me the number, but she did confirm the 959-2765 number.

I then called 1-800-959-2765, was answered by a person, and when I gave her my GST number, was informed that I hadn't filed a couple of GST returns from years past.  She said that she would send out the forms so I could file, and then told me I had 30 days to submit those returns.

The call was legitimate, and I can understand why they think those years weren't filed, though I'm sure I did.

Anyway, this number is apparently not a fraudulent one.

CRA wouldn't ask for your personal information over the phone. They already have that in their files. If CRA has a problem with your account, they'll send you a letter. And if that is not the case and it happens to be the CRA, then you have a pretty good explanation on why you kept on hanging up on them, as it is up to them to create a system that doesn't look and smell like fraud.

Some Pakistani/Indian woman from Revenue Canada looking for some other Pakistani/Indian woman who hasn't paid her GST account.

Can't remove my number from their system without the GST Account number, which they didn't leave in their message.

I called back this number and they are asking me my GST number and I said I can not leave my number. I need to know the agent name and he told me it is not necessary. And I said do not bother me again otherwise I shalll send you to a jail and he said he does not know who I am and I said I am working in Canada Revenue and he just hang up the phone.

This is the outcall number from the Canada Revenue Agency's collection department. They are legitimate.

It is a legitimate Canada Revenue Agency business collections phone number in Ottawa. I followed "honeyorange's" advice above and called 1-800-O-Canada to verify before calling them.

Fortunately for me they called looking for someone else! :)

The phone number 1-800-959-2765 is a Canada Revenue Agency phone number. It is NOT a scam. To check the legitimacy of the phone number call 1-800-OCanada (1-800-622-6232)

This is a scammer claiming to be Revenue Canada - they want to take your money.
