I filed the counter claim with the bank. Bank management explained since the "documentation" provided *enough* correct identifying information (Name & email address) that the charge would stick. And the bank zapped the $69.95 out of the account this morning (reversing the provisional credit I was given in January). And Peril Saint had attempted to charge the cancelled debit card twice since then.

I used to work in Retail Banking, I understand the bank's position. Still hopping mad that I'm stuck with this.

I had the same issue where Peril Saint replied to Chase stating I had orignally purchased their software a year and a half ago and they hadn't been able to bill me but I had had full access to the software the whole time (sure, right) but they were recently able to bill me again and that's why I received the charge, but the change in the company name is something I might not recognize.  Mine apparently was connected to Paypal, but I only use my Paypal account for ebay purchases, so this made no sense.  Just talked to both Paypal and Chase again to dispute the charge.  Both companies were very helpful and thanks to this message board, Chase's Fraud department was able to realize that Peril Saint is a fraudulent company.  My card has been cancelled and a new one is on the way.  It's a pain that this kind of stuff has to occur, but at least the companies were helpful and made it much less stressful.

I also disputed a $69.95 charge in January- and Peril Saint responded with "documentation" stating the use of the "nationalgrantsearch.com" site. The bank's given me two weeks to file a counter-dispute or the charge comes out. (card already cancelled & replaced)

Never visited their site. They've cited incorrect phone numbers and mailing addresses in their "documentation"- hope that's enough.

Just got a call today from our bank, who is putting the bogus charge BACK onto our card.  They said they contacted the company who informed them I signed up for something, and they provided my bank with an email address I supposedly used, which is NOT EVEN MY EMAIL ADDRESS!!!  MOTHER@#$*&^s!!!

I received the same exact letter you did from your bank.  However, since I still live at the same address (12.5 years total) and have the same phone number (same amount of time), my bank is basically telling me I'm screwed and that there is nothing they can do about it and that I need to "contact the company directly".

Needless to say, I'm on the search for a new bank and will be closing my Chase account as soon as possible.

I finally found that this was Perilous Saint Productions.....and the name Kate Lasson was associated with it......how did they get so many credit card numbers?  They are still trying to get my $69.95!  Amazing what people can do.....my first charge was also on 1/11.....and I caught it quickly and got the bank involved......

This is a version of the automatic debit scam as described by the FTC here http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/telemarketing/tel06.shtm  It's frequently mysterious as to how they got your account info in the first place. They might be fraudulently charging accounts at random or more likely you might have given/used your account to get something in exchange for a $-off coupon,  a free something like a shopping card with a small shipping fee, etc., and buried in the fine print is authorization to auto-charge your account every month with bullsh*t difficult-to-cancel subscriptions. The methods used to get you to "agree" to the fine print is endless and they come up with new schemes every day.
To stop the billing, contact the scammer to kill the subscription and get your money back and if that fails, tell your card issuer or bank that fraud has occurred and have them refund the money and replace the account - this is important, the account must be replaced because criminals have it and they can charge again or sell account info to other criminals. Report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.

I've had the same experience with Peril Saint and Chase actually refunded my $69.95. Today I got a letter from Chase stating that MasterCard had sided with Peril Saint and the $69.95 was deducted again. Apparently, all PS had to do was provide Master Card with my name and address to verify their claim. They didn't even have to say what I purchased.

I got the same Peril Saint charge for $69.95 on my Visa card in January 2011. I disputed the charge with my Visa card financial institution.

Peril Saint has now responded to propose that I purchased access to software from http://nationalgrantsearch.com in July of 2009! They claim they have been unable to bill me for some months. Well I guess so had I actually made a purchase in July of 2009.

I am disputing the charge again.

Just noticed these charges in my last Chase Visa statement. I probably wouldn't have noticed it at all except for the double refund of $69.95 that gave my overall bill a negative balance. Thought I was getting a "gift" from IMPRESSIVE until I noticed that they billed me last month on 01/12 from PERIL for 69.95. I thought these were from the wife buying something online, so I never gave it much thought. So two charges from PERIL SAINT for $69.95 (01/12 and 02/11) and two refunds from IMPRESSIVE for the same. No damage but I called Chase and got the credit card number changed.

Whatta pain, I've had that card for years, and actually got used to the number...

No Red Box rentals here, I'm afraid.

I suspect someone's selling very old credit card numbers and billing addresses. I had a similar hit to my card last year and found myself suddenly subscribed to some sort of supplements-by-subscription deal. When I disputed those charges and got my money back, Wells Fargo said some ecommerce websites have squirrelly checkboxes buried in their checkout pages that subscribe people to these types of shady deals.

I thought it might be possible, as I'd recently purchased goods from a different online retailer that I'd never used, but then again, I've worked for software companies and had my hands in/on credit card transaction processing systems for a few years, so I tend to stay alert for shady deals like that.

Should have shut down my card right then and there, just to be on the safe side.

On the other hand, in this latest case, Wells Fargo apparently authorized a credit card transaction in which the alleged address information (basically, the zip code) didn't match that of my current card, so why is this *my* problem? The reality is that unmatched zip codes and card numbers result in the cards being processed at a higher interchange rate, so instead of paying, say, 2.79% per transaction, the shady boys at Peril Saint are paying 3.3% -- but the transaction still goes through.

I understand why they accept the transaction: It's because they don't want to inconvenience customers who might be embarrassed by failed transactions and therefore will take their credit card business elsewhere. However, I can't imagine that the revenue gained from allowing these potentially fraudulent transactions really offsets the cost of eating the actually fraudulent ones...

My bank got in touch with me regarding this charge after I disputed it.

I received this information submitted by the scammer.

Begin Letter:

[Documatrix] purchased our Grant Education services on 2009-07-22 at 02:24 PM from the website, which at the time was located at http://www.nationalgrantsearch.com. We've been unable to bill this customer for several months now while they have maintained their full access to the software which is now located at http://www.nationalgrantsearch.com/ [and what, exactly, changed about this web address?]. At the time of order, the customer provided us with a positive AVS Match and CV2 Security Match. The customers [sic] Phone number and Address they provided us with is:

[An address that's about 4 years old]

The Customer was notified of the new website location upon several occasions via the email they provided us with; [a legit email address], and it wasn't until just recently [1.5 years afterward] that we were able to begin billing them again for our services, and for this reason we understand why they may not recognize the transaction at this time.

However, at this time we have canceled the customers [sic] account to avoid any further frustrations and/or misunderstandings, and to avoid any and all future billings. Show they have any questions or concerns, they are welcomed to contact us at their earliest convenience.

End Letter

What's going to save me on this transaction is that I moved and changed my billing address (and zip code) long before this charge was alleged to have occurred, and that other transactions had billed successfully using the new address both before and after the alleged charge. Otherwise, it looks legitimate to the issuing bank for my credit card.

I'm shutting the account down on Monday.

Good luck to everyone.

Billed $69.95 from Peril Saint. Filed a dispute with Bank  of America. They investigated and said that charge originated from GrantSearch.com in Australia. B of A felt this is a legitimate charge. Peril Saint was simply the billing company. (They not only had the card number but also the CVC code from the back of the card). Went to the GrantSearch website and clicked on 'contact us'. On that page is a link to another page called **Scam Alert**. I strongly recommend that everyone go to this page. There is a lot of excellent information about this scam including the name, addresses and phone numbers of the person behind this scam. I plan to forward this info to B of A.

Who are these guys?  A charge of $24.95 has hit my bank account again this month - this was after I had contacted the bank and filed a dispute last month.  I really don't want to change my account numbers again - isn't there someone out there who can help?

I too have been charged twice now for $24.95. This scam company somehow got my debit card number. I have to go to the bank and file a complaint so the charges will be reimbursed after they do an investigation. I also have to cancel my account and get a new card and number. I've also been scammed by another company called Impressive. They charge $69.95 each time. I wonder if these companies are related somehow? I'm in New York. I see that no state is safe. Thank you G for your post. I found out the same information about my financial institution when I called them to complain about fraud

Same deal for me.  Jan 11, posted on Jan 13. 24.95.  Cancelled cards and reported to bank fraud department.  A month later, two charges (also from Utah) by a company named IMPRESSIVE in the amount of 69.95.  Also fraudulent.
