Actually it's not illegal to record the call.

The law states that one party on the line has to be aware the call is being recorded and that one party can be the one doing the recording.

What is illegal is recording a call without any of the parties being aware.  That is wire-tapping, and unless being done by law enforcement with a warrant, it is illegal.

Now, that being said, don't ever give out any personal info, period, to anyone you do not know.

I received a text message on my cell phone stating that suspicious activity was reported on one of my credit cards and to call a certain number.  I did not call the number they provided, but called the number on my card instead.  The text turned out to be legit and they just wanted to make sure I had the card in hand as I had charges at gas stations in three different corners of the country in 2 days.  I travel for work so they thought it odd and just wanted to make sure.  I can appreciate that.

The scenario in #3 won't happen with bona fide cards or collection agencies.  Really?  I can not pay my bill then just give the debt collector someone's name to go after?  Uh...there's no co-signing on credit cards like an auto loan.  Not going to happen.

Point #4....if there is a bankruptcy in process or granted, if the card company was listed in the financial listing, then the card and the collection company cannot make attempts to collect.  They have to await the outcome and settlement of the bankruptcy court.  All one has to do it to notify the credit care company or the collection company, that the debtor is in the process of filing bankruptcy and provide the attorney's name.   Viola!  No more calls.

Never give you SS# to anybody unless required, such as for bank accounts, loan/credit apps, employment.  If the DMV wants to use the SS# for the driver's license # (some states do) refuse and ask for an alternative number.  They will comply with your request.

Calls received for days.  Asks for a person who is related to my daughter in law.  Says her name is Terri.  Caller ID shows V. Kearns.  Won't leave message, but when I finally picked up this is what I learned.

I'm constantly getting calls from 802-902-2993. It's a woman who says it's really important that I call her back. I find out it's a Discover Credit Card Collection number. However ... I don't have a Discover card! How can I get these people to stop calling me!

Yesterday I received had two missed calls from this number on my cell phone -- the 2nd time someone left a message for another person saying they were w/ the collection agency for Discover. I am now receiving calls from a similar number today. It's really annoying that i'm getting these solicitations all of the sudden -- on my cell phone!

It's from Discover Card services.  They call every day and want us to call an 800 number but when I call it, the phone says they are closed and to call back during normal operating times so I decided to call direct.  AT&T's Privacy Manager requires you to show your number or not get through to us.  That's how I got the number.

My room mate went BK 3 years ago and now they are calling to get money out of him PLUS they are calling for someone else that has evidently used this number also.  I have tried and tried to tell them that L.D. (the other person they are looking for) is not at this number and hasn't had this number in years but every day they keep calling for L.D. and my room mate.  My room mate called them today and I could hear them yelling and let's just say I don't think they will be calling back.

They have repeatedly called our telephone number.  They are Discover Financial Services (Collection for Discover Card.) They call us because we have the same last name as the person they are trying to reach.  They are violating federal laws doing this.  If anyone gets calls from them, they should report them to the Federal Trade Commission, you can do this online.

Tom-
You could at least have some tact in your post. Granted it's noble of you to defend your company, especially against anyone who is a deadbeat payer, but at least do it in a way that represents Discover and your company as it should be... with a little dignity.

First off your all dumb if you do not answer the phone.
I work for Discover financial, its Discovers collections department in sandy Utah - hence the 801 area code. 10 percent of discovers deliquent accounts get these phone calls and i assure its NOT YOU they are making money off of. because if you do not pay your bill they do not get their money and all that happens is they write it off as a company and you screw yourself,  but hey just credit huh.

There is a bout 5 collections numbers I know of from my department alone like this, That number is discover card, I had to pass a FBI backgroung check and prove I graduated high school to get in the door.
let alone drug screenings.

How many of you can say that??

honestly, you all know someone that cant and has not and works for Phils service station and gets these phone calls.

but of course blaming someone else is easier than taking responsibility.

I never answer the phone when I don't recognize the number, but it shows that they have called me over 30 times in the past month from about 6 different numbers.  Now that I know who it is I am going to ask them kindly to remove me from their calling list or I will report them to the BBB.  If they call back I will contact the BBB and report the number.  If everyone who has visited this site does the same thing, eventually all of the numbers associated to this scam will be blocked or reported to the BBB.  They will be found and the Boiler Room (if you haven't seen this movie, you should) will be shut down.  That is my suggestion to you if you are as annoyed as I am with these pestering phone calls.

Got a call today.  After several no answers I decided to answer because I am sick of the calls.  Told me I missed a payment (which I did by accident) and that my bill was $1000.00 more that it actually is.  Told the girl I just mailed my payment.  She wanted to know if I payed that amount due or the whole bill.  I told her I payed the whole bill and she gave me the higher figure.  She said she would take my info over the phone and I said no way.  The call was being recorded I heard the beeps and I was never informed. These people are con artists don't let them fool you!!!!!!

These people are frauds! They say they're from Discover, but don't give them your info!!! They are very suspicious because:

1) They record your call without announcing that they will do so. This is illegal and no major company would do such a thing for fear of being sued.

2) Their number is not associated with Discover's website in any way, although they claim to be from Discover. If this were an actual collection agency, Discover would either list their number under their section on collection agencies, OR the collection agency itself would have a website or listing in a directory where this number would appear. Neither of these are true.

3) In my case, they claimed that even though I don't have a Discover card, I must have been named by someone who has a Discover card and who has not paid their bills. I have asked everyone I know and no one has been contacted by Discover. The people I know who have Discover cards actually called Discover, who confirmed that their bills have been paid and that the company would contact anyone (other than someone actually listed on that particular card) on their behalf.

4) Finally, collectors would only contact legal family members in the event of bankruptcy or a serious default in payment, so the fact that the person at this number even suggested that I could be contacted as a 'friend' of a cardholder reveals that she is not telling the truth!

Don't give these people your info! Don't give them your social security number (which they ask for so they can 'look up your records')! If they contact you, call Discover card and let them know about this fraud. These people are not a legitimate collection agency!

I got a call - my last online payment did not go through.  They are persistent because of unpaid bills.  I recommend you contact Discover before they report you to the credit bureau.  They don't leave messages in order to be discreet.

A rep from this number called earlier, asking to speak to my boss. I didn't transfer the call as is company policy when I'm sure it is a solicitation- offered several times to take a message. The rep would not leave a phone number or reference number- said she needed to speak to him about some information that she sent him. Then, she asked for the phone number of his ex. Boy that really caught me offguard- they've been divorced 10+ years. The call was also being recorded- a very audible beep every few seconds. I refused to give any information, and ended up hanging up b/c I was really weirded out.

I've been receiving calls from this number recently, often leaving messages asking me to call back, but the latest message just had a woman's voice saying my name quizzically.  That was it.  I guess they're hoping I'll call back out of curiousity.  Their wrong about that!

From the messages that I first received I too assume that these calls are from Discover Card or one of their affiliates.  At least that is what it sounded like, but I wouldn't trust that either.

I have been getting these calls on my cell at work, so I can't answer, or too early before I'm even awake. No reverse phone searches found it, so i just "googled" that number and found this. I do have a  Discover card, but I am up to date on payments, so I don't know why they're calling me. They don't ever leave a message though. Its ultra annoying.

The caller requested that I call back @ 800-767-1140.  However, the number on my caller ID was 801-902-2993.  I called the 801 number and spoke to a pleasant gentleman.  He confirmed that the number was for their credit collections.

I don't have a Discover Card so I'm glad they are not looking me.
