Yeah, I too almost fell victim to this scam. But again, I persisted in seeing the interior of the house before agreeing to anything.
I mean, anyone who is so adamant about making sure you'll have a full refund if not satisfied?
For future reference to anyone, you can go to www.zillow.com and usually find the home listed, it's market value, if it's for rent and contact information for the landlord. I'm guessing this is how they got their information was from this site.

I'll admit, for those of us in a bind and needing a place to move into, this is a huge scam. If it matters to anyone, this is the address that I was given to send stuff to:

Receiver's Name: Green Ben(Secretary)
Address : 15 Jalan Imbi
City: Kuala Lumpur
State:Kuala Lumpur
Country: Malaysia
Postal code: 47000

I replied to the home in Cary on CL as well. I got the scammer's email suggesting he is in Malaysia and can't show the home. I hope you did not get suckered into sending him money as a simple search of the address will find the home listed with legitimate real estate agents and a much higher rent rate on the home.

Big Red Flag... If you list the home for rent with an agent, why are you listing the home on Craigslist at nearly half the asking rate?

Bottom line, do all of your research before sending any money. Google search the address, and any phone numbers sent to you in an email. Don't be a victim. Be smart

Trying to run a scam on a house in Cary, NC. Realtor.com search of home address finds the home is listed at $1,300 / month. Craiglist ad from this scammer listed the home at only $700 / month.

The old saying holds true once again.

If it sounds too good, it probably (definitely) is.

I knew right away once I got a prompt response from this "renter" and all this mumbo jumbo about giving me keys, and trust. PSSSHHH yea, in america? trust?? OK!! That was the instance I knew, not to mention his reply is very broad and not specific to any of the questions I asked, or responding to ANYTHING i specifically inquired about. I decided to call the number anyway just to see what kind of people these really were, I called from an untraceable number, luckily I have those resources from where I work, just incase these are crazies ;) some middle eastern sounding man, I was very polite and say "Hi, to whom am I speaking with?" He hesitated and stammered before finally just disregarding my question all together and replying with "are you calling about the house?" I said "I am, now who am I speaking with, please?" he again disregards my question and asks my name. CLICK. I don't know who he is, what he's doing, but I'm here to tell you its obviously not what its intended to be. Be careful. I found his post in Maryland.

Hi, was this ad in regards to a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom in Cary?  I was a little uneasy with his email so I did a people finder search.  Nothing came up so I didnt fret as much.  I am currently waiting to get the key to look at the house.  I am very sorry if you and your family were ripped off.  Did you file legal actions against the guy?  Thank you for posting.  Hope you found something better.

Yes, I responded to this special offer in Carlsbad, CA.  He has the same mode of operation.  No keys or inside the property until he has $850 rent and $850 deposit up front.  Won't respond to legal demands regarding compliance with California Rental Law agreement, tenant rights, condition and inspection of property inside and out prior to rental, written lease agreement available to tenant prior to renting property, address where he can be found, and I spoke with him on the phone once.  He could even remember his response to my application (funny he doesn't ask about your employment or financial ability to pay the rent, etc.)  Lots of red flags on this one.  He hasn't answered my last email asking for compliance with rental agreement, inspection and a whole list of legal compliance per California Law - I think he vanished as his ad is gone for the property.  The area code 802 is from the state of Vermont.  Probably a cell and he just may be in the USA.  BEWARE of these ads - they do not comply with the law nor what is a normal valid business transaction!  I am a criminal and civil expert fighting fraud and corruption.

Yeah, this has all the red flags.  I requested more information about his property that was 4 rent and called this number.  It was a Magic Jack customer and I asked him if he was in Malaysia currently and he said yes.  I asked him if I could see the property and he told me to read his email.  I then asked him if this was a scam and he hung up.  He was very rude and did not sound confident at all.

Definitely a scam! The same thing happened to me that happened to you others. I drove to the house in Memphis, TN and walked around back to look at the backyard and I peeked in the window. The whole house was furnished and clearly not "ready to move in" like he said. When he asked me to wire the money to Jerry Baker, his secretary, in Malaysia I knew without a doubt it was a scam.

I saw an ad for a Rental home on Craiglist and send an email to request more info. I had my doubts if the ad was real or a scam, but as long as they don't ask for personal or financial info I was interested.   Two days later I received an extremely polite response that sounded "to good to be true" and included this phone number as contact info.  And you know what they say, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.  Since they didn't ask for any personal information I asked them how to proceed.  I'm still waiting for their response, but I really doubt this is a real ad.

I also looked up the owner's data on County tax webpage and it matches, but this information is public and anybody have access to it, just as I did.  I will be contacting the listing agent for this house, since the house has been for sale on the market, to let them know they are victims of identity theft.

Replied to an add for rental home with owner living in Malaysia and all sounds very suspicious as others have stated.  Want incredibly low rent in trust for immacualate care of home but he cannot show the inside of the property!  Phone number is giving this away as a scam apparently. Would like to know what has happened to others here.

Whoever is using this is coming up with a really good scam for a rental house. Offering a great price and claiming all of the real owners information (identity theft). I honestly believed everything until I looked up the number and found these other posts.

I was very suspicious of the Craigslist rental listing, but decided to reply anyway.  I got a response e-mail in which it was quite obvious that English was the writer's second language, a major red flag.  However, the listed address was correct and a Google title search displayed the e-mail's author as the property owner.  Of course, this information is readily available to anyone.  I'm 99% sure this is a scam, but as I'm fairly close I'm going to drive by the listing's address anyway to see if anyone's living there.
