I am an Import/Export Compliance Manager for an Aviation Parts Supplier in the US.  I just got a call from this number on my company cell.  I didn't answer it, then I looked up the number and found this.  They called back pretty much immediately, normally UPS calls my office phone...but has been calling the cell from a few different numbers as of late.  I answered it the second time and the CSR needed to correspond about a shipment I sent to Japan, she gave me the tracking number and didn't ask for ANY of my personal information.  On the import side of things if you are an Importer of Record, yes any company importing on your behalf MUST have the Federal Tax ID or EIN of the importing company OR if you are an individual they will likely require (and should require) your SSN as this is the only way to identify an individual.  I haven't dealt with a personal import so I'm not sure if they contact the individual every time or only if they need information to confirm the type of import so they can declare to customs properly.  I believe they will clear most shipments on their own without contacting the person on their bond, as they can if they like.  But if they need or want info to clarify they will have to contact you for info and identification.  SO I CAN VOUCH THE NUMBER IS UPS, and they are handling true UPS shipments/inquiries.  I would think it was a scam too, if I was unfamiliar with the customs import process....so I understand the skepticism.  UPS or any other importing customs broker/courier/forwarder may have to return the package to the shipper after a certain amount of time if they can't get the information.  Thanks!

Definitely a SCAM. Got a call from them on 07-02-2013. Here's why it's a scam:

1. Our business handles everything electronically (including payment of invoices), and UPS only communicates with us through email or snail mail. PLUS we have a specific account rep from UPS with whom we work and we know by name.

2. IF by chance we had a package coming from overseas and our paperwork was incorrect or had missing information, here's what would happen:  - US Customs would hold the package and contact the SENDER for the updated paperwork. It would NOT be the shipper's responsibility to collect this information. It opens them to too much liability.

3. UPS in NO WAY would require your SSN # or FEIN for billing - if you have an account with them, they already have an FEIN on file. If you don't have an account, but are supposed to be RECEIVING a package, then they should be billing the SENDER - unless its COD. Which, dear scammers, means CASH ON DEMAND - and NOT POSSIBLE because its against US Customs regulation for overseas imports.

NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR SSN, OR PAYMENT INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE. ASK FOR AN EMAIL OR SOME KIND OF PAPER DOCUMENTATION.

And all these "commenters" that say it's legit here? LIARS. How can you live with yourself at night knowing that you are lying? Your worth is reflected in your moral compass, and it looks like your compass is below the gutter and broken. Better have that looked at.

I received a phone message today from 803-502-6732, which shows on my caller ID to be from Aiken SC. The woman said she works for UPS, had a shipment to me On Hold, and needed my Fed Tax ID. She said the Tracking Number, but it came up blank on the UPS website. I wasn't expecting any package, and thought the call was bogus until I saw this forum. So, I called back, and she said the Shipper was Company X, which is the name of my employer, and read the shipment description, which named a specialized piece of scientific equipment that my company sells and ships. At that point I knew the call was legitimate, and I gave her my employer's EIN (Employer Identification Number). That's all she needed. I figured that my company would make me the last to know that I was getting a package from them.

We received a call and they asked for a SS# or company tax ID.
Before asking for it, they correctly identified a shipment that we were expecting.
That SS# needs to go to US Customs just in case a duty needs to be levied.

In any event, we got the package in and so far no customs tax.

So this is a legit call from UPS

Seems legit altho it is odd. They called and sent an emai. When they called, they asked for my business tax I'd #. When I said my package was for me personally, they did NOT ask for any more info. If its a scam, they aren't very effective because they didn't ask for any personal info.

PS: It is correct that UPS will never ask you for a SS#, at least not over the phone, but the US Gov't and their brokers will. They are required to collect that information for certain shipments. UPS assists with providing and submitting these forms, but they do not require them for their own use.

Yes, this is definitely a legit UPS number. I am late with a couple of duty payments for international shipments and I just spoke about them to woman calling from this number. She didn't need to ask for my SS#, because I already provided that information to UPS when I shipped the packages. Not a scam.

Got a call from them. It is legitimate. UPS Brokerage. If you are importing a large package from overseas, you will need to provide them with either a Tax ID or a Social Security number. If you are worried about it, call their direct number and then provide the information.

Received a call from this # today.  It was not UPS, but came up as WASHINGTON SAFE.  Hence I am highly doubtful and any claim about it being UPS legitimate.  Secondly, this call came in on a number that is basically a fax number, few people have and I rarely give out.

Thirdly, you should NEVER give out your SS# to anyone over the phone...ever.  If it is needed, fill out an official form/document.  Even the CPB will tell you to guard that number with your life.

Yesterday I received a call from this # and I was told the same thing about my Social Security #. I immediately sent UPS an email asking that under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES would UPS request a persons SS#. This was my response from UPS.

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your inquiry. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. However, in order to maintain the integrity of our security measures, UPS would never require a Social Security Number.

Please contact us if you need any additional assistance.

This is the main line to our brokerage house. Employees usually call to get information on shipments coming from over seas, mexico and canada. They may also call to get personal information such as tax id's, proper billing address or ss number if needed. (FDA requires SS or tax id)

Thats simply untrue... they DO require your SS or tax ID for some shipments.
Try importing any decent Quanitity from Canada and you will get the same issue with any trucking or LTL carrier.

guys, you are freaking out about nothing.
UPS has a brokerage division that would require a TAX ID for all imported shipments.
And yes, the number is correct... but there is a full range... 803-502-6703 you can call back TO THEM if you are nervousl; it is most definitley legit.

Scam or no scam? I guess when your package doesn't arrive because it is lacking the proper information to clear through US Customs you'll find out. For packages with a value over $2000.49 a business EIN is needed and if it is going to a person then a SSN is needed. Trust me, if we didn't need this info we wouldn't call. I for one have no idea what I would do with an EIN, but whatever. So the question is give and receive or don't give and not receive, the choice is yours.

It was UPS, who we use all the time, needing some specific information about a part we have coming in to get it cleared through customs.  Call was valid, as we have been expecting this particular part to come in this week via UPS.  They didn't request any confidential info, SSN, or Tax id numbers - just wanted to know a more specific part description (as our descriptions are pretty vague and usually not enough info for customs).

First, I NEVER have anything to do with UPS.
I sent something down to a friend in the US on Friday(today is Monday) and they arranged pick up. Yes, they sent UPS to pick up the package.
This morning I got a call from this number but did not make it to the phone. I checked the tracking of the package and guess what? Its at the UPS Clearing Agency at the same time I recieved the call from this number.
So,...is it a legit number from UPS, Ah yea, I think so...:)

NO ITS NOT! Shows how much you know...I actually work at this particular UPS building. It is NOT a scam. Everyone is not out to try and get you. We do need your social security to enter some shipments into the US. We handle international shipments here. Feel free to look it up on the customs website. You can give your info or choose not to, but you just wont recieve the shipment that was heading to you. Check your facts before you just assume it is a scam. If you werent expecting a shipment then all you had to do was ask the representative for the Shippers info and you could have contacted them for verification. I completely understand being careful before you just hand out your SS# over the phone to a stranger, but at least check things out before you get rude with people and end up just looking ignorant

THIS IS A SCAM!

Called me 2 times. Once on 12/3/09, Once today: 12/18/09.
The first time "The invoice was past due 60 days". The second time (15 days later) it was past due 90 days!!!
LOL
I do receive international shipments on a regular basis, including from UPS. UPS or FedEx or DHL, they all will send you a physical invoice in plain old land mail. (or electronic if you have an account with them).

No legit business (unless they have an existing business relationship with you) will EVER ask for your SSN.
Please do check CBP.gov. Better yet: http://www.fbi.gov/cyberinvest/escams.htm

If you do feel compelled to talk to these people, and they ask you for money, just ask them to send you a paper invoice.
