Number 803-835-5000 called saying they were Citi Financial Auto or something like that.  They said my name was in a database provided by a neighbor.  They hung up on me when I tried to find out additional information.

Caller ID showed Fort Mill SC with the number 8038355000.  When the machine picked up and the caller left a message, it was a call from Citi Financial in Dallas TX.  Here is the return number she gave 888-877-6168. She was calling me to reach my brother-in-law.  My name is not on his account information.  How did she get my number?  I am not responsible for his accounts and have no interest in them.

Most of these calls are collections calls.  They will find your number when looking for a relative that is behind on their bills.  Many companies have access to databases that will provide them with this kind of information, which they use to find people who aren't paying them.

Received call today from this same number and they did not leave any messages. I dialed back and it is for CitiFinancial (either personal loans, auto loans,or CitiGroup). I can't understand why they are contacting me since I have NONE of the above mentioned accounts with them!

Got a call from this number today, and yesterday, and they day before...  I have never had a citi credit card or loan. However, I do have a ton of cash in a citibank account.  Being these uneducated morons like to insult me after they call me, I'm a gonna ride over to the citibank tomorrow, and threaten to clean out my account if they can't get it to stop.  Even if citibank and citi financial are 2 different entities, I do believe I am still going to pull it all out.  Don't think I want to be doing business with any citi company, especially since they hire people that talk all guetto and act like they  are on crack when they call.

they "citi" started calling me in October i believe....i was talking and trying to work out payment arrangments with the original loaning office i recieved the loan from...my loan was a personal loan...long story short i took the loan out in june 08...i paid on time every month until sept 09....at this point i was out of work from oct 08 till oct 09....lost my home to foreclosure in april of 09, lost my dad to cancer in march 09, my 14 yr old daughter has a child june 09, (remember still making my pymts) lost a vehicle may 09...sold everything i pretty much owned so that this pymt could be made and salvage so creditability...anyway money runs out they start calling asap...i explained over and over the circumstances and all i have endured....i am a single mom of two, i recieve no child support or government help...it is strictly me..doing it all..anyway they didnt care about my personal hardship and know have sent my loan to their colector which is the calls i get now, i have tried to explain to them that as soon as i am caught up on my bills that affect my way of living i would start sending money anything i could as soon as i could that it was crucial for me as well to pay this loan off...they didnt care, she started asking me how often i get paid and how much...i simply told her that was none of her business....im still getting the calls sometimes 2 or 3 times a day have even recieved after 900 pm and before 8 am...i do not answer and let it go to vm...there is nothing i can do...i explained that hopefully in feb 2010 i could start paying something...anyway long story short they have now sent me a letter stating they will take any legal actions necessary to recover their loss as far as looking at my assests....HELLO IVE ALREADY EXPLAINED IVE LOST EVERYTHING THERE IS NOTHING TO TAKE....someone please tell me what to do....i do want to pay this loan off...but they will continue to harrass me if i call back....i here is another call coming in on my cell from them...im at work..and this is the second in two hours......

Under the TCPA, a consumer has a right to file a lawsuit and recover $500 for each call that violates the TCPA. The TCPA can also be used in conjunction with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in some situations.

Generally, the TCPA does not apply to debt collectors making collection calls to debtors. However, if you are subjected to calls from a debt collector and you are not the debtor, you may file a lawsuit against the debt collector under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and the TCPA.

This right was recently recognized by Judge Legrome D. Davis in a case called Watson v. NCO Group, Inc.  NCO Group is a debt collector that uses automated prerecorded collection calls.  In this case, Mr. Watson alleged he was getting hundreds of calls from NCO Group after he got a new phone number. Mr. Watson claimed he owed no debt to NCO Group, Inc.  Mr. Watson filed suit under both the FDCPA and TCPA.

David Israel, defense lawyer for NCO, argued that the TCPA should not apply to debt collectors.  Judge Davis rejected the argument made by David Israel. The judge ruled that Mr. Watson had a right to sue NCO Group Inc under the TCPA for $500 for each call.  Judge Davis wrote;

[The] Court is convinced that a non-debtor's rights are in fact violated when he is subjected to repeated annoying and abusive debt collection calls that he remains powerless to stop.

Judge Davis' ruling was based upon his interpretation that collection calls to non-debtors violate the privacy rights provided by the TCPA.

So what can you do if you receive "wrong number" calls from debt collectors?

1. Sign up for the Do-Not-Call registry.
2. Save the calls captured by your voice mail or answering machine.
3. Contact a consumer lawyer.

Debt Collector
So at 8:30 in the morning I get a call from a company called Citi Financial. They keep asking for debt collection and credit card payments that I don't even owe because I am not 18. So obviously I can tell that there is something wrong when they don't immediately stop calling me. I called them just this morning and the supervisors all claim "We are unable to remove you number." Last time I tried to have my number removed, I was put on hold and nobody ever came back to address the situation. This time when I called, I got yelled at by some woman who accused me of not giving enough information to help her delete my number. Well excuse me for not having any accounts and for refusing to buy into your greedy money-stealing scam!

They called me at 9:19 pm EST, 8/13/2009.  The # 1-803-835-5000.  The guy's name was John, 866-788-8550 extension 65240.  He wanted me to return his call.  Isn't that illegal after 9:00pm?

Just got a call from this number this morning, looking far a Laura McDaniel. I've been getting calls for Laura McDaniel for over a year, on and off. These people are really persistent. She must owe a lot of money, or ran off with a car or something. I told the caller that no one by that name lived here. Then she asked if I knew Laura McDaniel. I politely told her no, and I've been getting calls for her for over a year. She said, "I'm sorry" and remained polite. I've said this to a previous caller, who also said she was sorry. I figure I'll be getting another call probably next month.

Not sure who they are.  It comes in on my caller ID as S. Carolina.  I have read some of the above comments about them calling people to find other people.  They are breaking the law when they do this.  According to the FTC, debt collectors are only supposed to make contact with the person who owes the debt or a lawyer.  If they contact someone else, they are breaking the law.  Tell them that you will report them to the FTC when they call looking for a relative or asking you to pass a message on to someone else.  Not sure why they are able to have databases listing relatives or other people they can contact to find you, because it is unlawful to call a third party.  So report them to the FTC.

I got a call from this number this morning. They were asking me about one of my neighbors. They wanted me to tell them if I knew if my neighbor still lived at the address they gave me.  I didn't know the person they named... This was really uncomfortable for me to be drilled by an unknown person on the phone.  I wonder if the practice of calling someone's neighbor regarding a debt is legal or not?  You'd think this would be a violation of a persons privacy.....

Missed a call from that 803-835-5000 number on 8/1/08 2:47 pm Pacific Time.  They left no message, but from the sound of this complaint list, they must be a low budget collection agency that hires the mentally challenged.  I really hope they simply missed dialed my number and wont be calling back.  If they do I'll give them an earfull.
