I need to accept an inmate calling who is my husband but GTL doesn't let the automated call ring than only few seconds which is irritating and when I finally accept and my husband calls me they do block my number after few days - month and it costs me a lot of money and I have a huge headache because of this and I do mean Global Tel Link! NOT my husband. Does anybody know why they do this blocking?

This number calls our office at least twice a day every day, with the automated message. I'm going to check into paying a little extra to get the feature to block calls because right now, this number is at the top of the call-blocking list.

And, IMO, going to the FCC about it is ignorant and ridiculous. The message is very clear about why the call is being made. Perhaps some of the commenters here should be more patient instead of jumping to conclusions and making rash decisions.

The reason the calls are made is because an inmate in Powhatan Correctional Facility in State Farm, VA has listed you as a phone number that they want to call. The system will dial you to get your consent to receive calls from the inmate. If you listen to the prompts, you can refuse the request and the calls will stop.
This is not a scam, telemarketing or anything to be afraid of. Just take the call and answer the prompts, easy as that.

I get four or more phone calls per day from this MCI VA Corrections number, and it will not stop. I am guessing that it is on automatic dialing. I cannot find a Web site with a contact number to stop this stupidity.
helpful20111107 2011-11-07 21:34:51 Unknown
Listen to the prompts. There is an option to block calls from the correctional facility.

I called the "Report" number as indicated at the top of this blog. After holding almost 10 minutes, I got a technical support guy who basically said he couldn't help me unless I knew the name of the Correctional Institute in Richmond. He gave me another number - 877-650-4249. When I dialed, the selections were for credit questions, payment questions, etc. When I pressed "0", it wouldn't send me to anyone live. So I pressed "4". Got a nice fellow on the line named Joe. He confirmed that the reason I'm getting these calls is because an inmate in the Virginia prison system is requesting that my telephone number be put on a list of numbers he/she is allowed to call. In order to stop these automated calls, I will *have* to push several buttons that correspond to "NO", and (a) the automated calls will stop and (b) the inmate will not be allowed to call our telephone number.
I thanked Joe and made a suggestion that GlobalTel would do well to indicate more specifically what the automated call is about. His reply was that most people who get these calls know what they're about because they know someone who is in prison. There was no use pursuing it - I thanked him and hung up.
Once again, the burden falls upon the innocent. I have spent nearly an hour trying to get this straightened out. And I *still* have to push the buttons the next time we get the call.
Oh, and I went the FCC site and filled out a complaint form about this issue. Felt good to vent!!

for the record...IT *IS* A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY. geez. its not a scam or anything go through the prompts and opt out. its not that hard. also GTL is global tell link or something like that . they are the billing company the prison goes through.

Does anyone know how to stop these calls, other than answering the phone. My grandma is getting these calls all of a sudden and it is really bothering her. I guess I am gonna have to go to her house and sit there until the call comes in and follow the prompts.

Success in blocking number from 'Eastern Financial'. Started getting these calls this week from 804 674 1535 caller id shows as Eastern Financial. Based on other posts I called GTE 877 856 3184. They validate numbers that inmates want to call - prior to allowing inmates to call the numbers. Based on our number the operator said that an inmate from Sussex Prison added our number to the list. We do not know anyone in prison and I asked that our number be blocked and they accommodated this. My guess is that inmates add any numbers they can - perhaps this is some type of scam that they are trying to run from prison. Block the number thru your provider if you can or call GTE to block.

On 9/19 around 12:00 noon I received 3 calls (back to back) from this number. I missed the first 2 calls and then picked up the 3rd one. It was an automated operator so I hung up. Then at 3:30 I got another call from the same number, I answered and it was the automated operator again, this time I listened for a minute and it stated that this operator will call my number 3 times per day and if I did not want to receive these calls to be sure to do everything it asked me to do...then asked me to press 1 for English or 2 for Spanish. So I hung up again.

I have a crazy ex in prison in VA who's been trying to get my number added to his approved call list. if you follow the steps it will tell you who the inmate is thats trying to reach you. At that point you will have the option to accept or deny the request.
I denyed :)
Anon 2011-06-06 20:59:15 Unknown
This is a call from Global*Tel Link, a company that sets up accounts so that inmates in Virginia Department of Corrections may make phone calls... If someone is in jail and wishes to call you, they must add you to their call list. When they add you, you will get a phone call from this number. This is just them trying to verify that it is you, and that you wish to allow the inmate to call you. It's an automated recording, just listen to the prompts to either allow the inmate, (they will tell you their name.) to call you or not.
Yes or No? 2011-06-06 20:59:15 Unknown
In order to receive a phone call from an inmate, they must add your number to a call list. Once they do this, you must either agree to or deny them the ability to call. This is an automated system. No scam associated with it, but they will continue to call until a response is replied.
