This originates from Cal Poly, SLO, a university.  Various departments call on behalf of the university to help raise funds for the school and to enhance its educational programs.  Most universities do this type of thing.  Generally, it seems to me, they call those who have some connection to the school even if in the far distant past.  For example, universities most often ask support from alumni (even if you graduated 30 years ago like my husband and I did), other former students, parents of students, and past supporters.

They called me tonight at 8:35. I believe it's the first time this number has called. I didn't answer,as I never answer calls from unfamiliar numbers. No message was left.

Cal Poly asking alumni for donations.  Better to pick up the call, and simply ask them to take you off the list.  They are respectable people - just asking for donations.

This is the # that shows up for anyone who calls from Cal Poly State University San Luis Obispo. It could be an employee, student or even a visitor to campus.
