Thanks everyone for this info.  For the second straight time of listing on Craigslist, I have received the same text as everyone.  It smelled scam from the beginning.  I will NOT respond.

I posted a craigslist ad, responder asked "do you still have it?". Suspicious at the brevity of the response, I answered simply, "I do". This response followed an hour later:
-------------------

Great, I would only pay by certified check. I would wait until check has cleared from your bank before I proceed with pick up. Please provide me with your name, mobile number and address for the check to be cut and mailed via FEDEX overnight. My mover would come for it after check clears. Please kindly delete your post from site to avoid any interruptions.

This is a well-known scam involving bad checks. Don't do any business with anyone using this number... or offering to send you a certified check. This same number has been reported in detail on other 'whoisit?' type sites. I am posting here too, to make sure no one misses the warning.

Deal locally, and always be careful!

Since you seem to have made the scammers' "sexy" list, I guess you're going to have to block their numbers and report those email addresses as spam.  Sorry for your trouble, but your earlier comments made me laugh.   Hope they stop bugging you.

Thank you for writing it all out in such detail. It will help others from falling for it. You're lucky your bank chose not to prosecute you for depositing a fake check (federal crime).

Re. "How on God's Green Earth do I sound 'sexy' selling a dishwasher?!", it sounds irrational but think of this from the viewpoint of an attacking criminal. "please visit my link ... naughty pics of me" suggests a invitation for malware infection and they'll say anything to try to get you to click on that link. Some small fraction of all potential victims they text will fall for it.

Sorry you got caught up in that. At least I knew right off I was being scammed because they weren't interested in my dishwasher, they wanted to get together with me since 'We live in the same area and they are new here and don't have friends yet and I sound so "Sexy"'. Really? How does a Selling a Maytag sound sexy?  Maybe I should try selling my puppies poop? Maybe this will lead me to my Soulmate?! ROFLMAO!!Sorry, I digress, I've been going thru this *^%$#@, since mid-November

Updated:  12/05/12  12:14 pm est

We were scammed and now have to pay $1,635 in restitution to bank on canceled check.

Stay away from people claiming to be James Thayer or the number above.

If selling items on Craigslist, stay away from responses of "Is this item up for grabs?"

Complete Scam

Wow. Thank you to those above for reporting this number and the scam because I learned
something.  My wife listed her car on Craigslist for $1600 and only response was from James Thayer
who wrote verbatim what is listed above.  "Is this car still up for grabs?"

We replied yes and I had asked if he was in the area or associated with a car dealer with the same last name nearby.  He wrote back in complete sentences ending with "Peace be upon you and yours" and that he was happy with the price and would go for it.  Wanted our home address which was a mistake.  Wells Fargo check came to our house eventually, later than promised, for purchase price plus approx. $1700 for shippers.  Also asked for our cell numbers, also a mistake.  We had assumed that he was a car seller scouring through the Internet to find cars for customers.

My wife cashed the check Monday 12/3 and deposited into a special account.  We were to await further instructions for "shippers"  I had asked over 3 times for more details on shipping and how to transfer the title with no answer.  Once he learned through FedEx the check was delivered, the tone of emails changed to a more aggressive nature and the sentences became choppy with bad structure.  He wanted half the money wired to an address in Georgia, a Dr. Calvin Kelly in Columbus, GA through Walmart Moneygram, take money out of "excess" to pay for wire transfer, $114.  She did that with difficulty because of her job time constraints on Tues. 12/4.  Check came from Patricia Thayer in Georgia.

Afterwards, after confirming reference number to him, I received a call from him later talking in broken English foreign accent that his daughter had just gotten hospitalized that morning, very sick and he needed to divert funds to help with that.  What a coincidence.  I knew at that point that this was a scam after hearing about similar tales.  He wanted me to send $900 of the money we were to keep for purchase and send it up to an address in Detroit which happens to be Ford Field, where the Lions football team plays. Yeah.  I then told him I will not get further involved and that I was not sending anyone more money, in the USA or outside.  Cutting this off now, no more!  I have no time for this.  We are sending the full remainder of $1640 back to the original sender, not to the address in Detroit.  Possibly an operation of funneling of money to people with ties to enemies. Total scam and we are sending this information to the police.  Beware.

For phone number 813-480-9116
This person found me on Craigslist as well.  Offered certified check for a washer and dryer.  I called them, instead of just texting, to feel it out since it would be such a large transaction.  The phone had a voicemail with a name, but then after the voicemail it started to ring like a normal phoneline.  WEIRD.  The text was as follows (verbatim):
Them:  ?Washer and Dryer ? super clean/new - $800 (101 and Deer Valley)is this still up for grabs
Me:  ?Yes it is!?
Them:  ?payment is by certified check I?d wait for it to clear before pick up.  If acceptable Please provide your full name and residential address?
Me: ?Yes that should work fine.  I can call you after 5.  My name is Katie.?
Me: ?I just tried calling and I think your voicemail came on but then it started ringing???
Me:  ?Did you get my text about calling you yesterday?  To discuss payment and pick up??

They never responded.  This means they are scammers, probably from Nigeria, who will over pay the certified check, then have the person ?return? the overpaid money to them.  The original check is bad, and you end up paying THEM money.  It?s a common scam.  Just be aware.

For phone number 813-658-8817
Them: "Generator:Troy-Bilt 5000W - $500 (101 and Deer Valley) is this still up for grcbs?"
Me: "Yes it is."
Me: "Are you still interested in the generator?  I have another person looking at it."
Them: "payment is by certified check.I would wait until it has cleared before I proceed with pick up.please provide me with your name and address"

Needless to say, this is when I realized that something was off and that I had heard all this before.  So be weary of any 813 numbers and texts from Craigslist.
