I got a call 04/21/2014, I had just been released from the hospital a few weeks earlier so wasn't at my best. A man  he was with LSU Legal Service. He stated that his employer represented a payday loan company named Riverside. He had my personal info and was very insistent that if I didn't pay the debt of $1,880 that he had a team waiting at the courthouse to file a civil complaint. I told him I didn't have that kind of money so he put me on hold to "talk to one of the lawyers on this case" to see what could be done. He came back with $1,380, 172.50 every other week until the end of July. I can not believe that I fell for this. I gave him my debit card info and have had two payments taken out of my account. It wasn't until a got a call from another payday loan fraud recovery unit that I put it together. This guy threatened me with a felony class warrant if I didn't give $200 right away. Of course I didn't have that either, so then he gave me until today to see if I could get family or friends to lend me the money. He was supposedly from Shapiro Law fraud recovery unit. He had ALL of my personal info, including my SS, address, and where I worked. I don't recall taking out either one of these loans especially since it was 2.5 years ago for both.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

I totally Agree with you Beth..  So i just received a call regarding my brother , from a "Morgan Phillips" & was told to forward this number & some other little number over to him... My husband works for the Law Division so I'm definitely going to run it by him.
- And if it turns out to be this is a scam I will be reporting fully.. Hey and the catch is she contacted me on my work phone. All calls are recorded.

For others if you get a call just avoid it & contact someone lets stop these scammers!

Just received a call from ''unknown number''. Left a message so I called the number back. A Tom Stewart said I owed money to a payday loan company called Riverside or Evergreen. I told him I had never heard of them and it wasn't me. He gave me 2 options to take care of it. I told him I would do my own research and get back with him. He was very rude about the whole thing! Having had my SS stolen recently I am skeptical of everything. Shortly after got 2 more calls for people I never heard of! Definetly sounds like a scam.
