Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Received a call last night about a supposed debt of my husbands, they also called his place if employment, saying its a urgent legal matter. Was told if we didn't pay we would be sued and wages garnished, if we did make a payment they would stop the legal process. When I asked if they were a law firm was told they were a litigation firm. Also asked why they didn't have a website, gave us some spew on how to go to the secretary of state of California website and do a business search for the name K&MFG, nothing turned up, also looked on BBB in the area that they say they are located and nothing under that name. Seems fishy!! Beware!!

My husband received this same call as a voice message on his phone about my ex husband and myself. They called my daughter who is away at school but only asked for my ex husband. They made a threat about my home address and left the same number with both my husband and my daughter.  How are they doing this getting cell phone numbers and personal information that is not published.

I tried calling the number and it only goes to a voice mail with the ext 5563.

I wish I had seen this post before I called the number back. They called my cell phone and left a message that this was a time sensitive matter that I needed to call back about (my EX-sister in law's name) and gave my address, my name and a "docket number" as in court docket number for something that hasn't even been filed yet. (liars!!!!!) . then stated in the message that if I didn't "take care of this time sensitive matter in a timely fashion" that the address and employment would be "deemed correct" and would be served with papers. I called and gave them her number. But they were (of course) very vague about who they were and couldn't discuss with me what this was about and when you say that you don't have contact with the person because they are not in your life anymore their response is  " hmmm...oh....ok...ill make note of it" Why the hell isn't anything done about this?!!???  How can they continue to basically lie. Look at all the posts here and see that they are up to no good.

Have received the same type of call for three days now.
They leave this phone msg.  "We have documents that are pending in the Clerk's Office to be issued out for (my husband's name),  if you have any questions or concerns regarding this information, communicate directly: telephone number (844) 826-6503,  reference number file number (xxxxx). No returning call made in the next 24 hours... they [will be issued to the] address that's listed on file, and at that point it has been verified and this information will be issued out to the location."
I called them yesterday and did not give them any of my personal information and they hung up on me when I asked them who they were.

This is a scam. I googled the number and it is spoofed (844 numbers have not yet been issued). I googled part of the message and it's the same that a lot of phantom debt scammers use (found almost this exact wording on the FTC Scam Alert site ). They called and left message:

"We have documents that are pending in the Clerk's Office to be issued out for (my husband's name),  if you have any questions or concerns regarding this information, communicate directly: telephone number (844) 826-6503,  reference number file number (xxxxx). No returning call made in the next 24 hours... they [will be issued to the] address that's listed on file, and at that point it has been verified and this information will be issued out to the location."

Be informed and be aware.
