Received a call through our 24 HR answering service. I guess when they found out we were a Funeral Home that we could not assist them! Shame! Sometimes they call wanting us to supply them information-would never offer any information without a family members permission-privacy rules & regulations. However, we have a local Attorney who handles our collections.

My daughter has been getting called by these guys for the entire year she's had the phone. Pretty sure they are after the original owner of the number, but I have no idea who that was. They should call Verizon and ask who had it prior to my daughter being assigned it.

Seriously, if I owed them something (my daughter is only 11 so she hasn't incurred any debt) shouldn't they have sent me something in the mail by now? Been living in the same spot almost 7 years now and all my prior debt was taken care of in a bankruptcy.

Simply stupid.

If you have suffered circumstances resulting in defaults on loans or bills and are hounded by bill collection agencies, do this:

1) If you get calls from numbers you don't recognize, even if they appear to be a local caller, or appear on Caller ID as innocuous (Red Cross) DON''T ANSWER THE PHONE.Collectors route through local exchanges or simply spoof the CID to trick you into answering.
2) If you get mail from out of state or even local agencies OR their lawyers requesting/requiring payment and making threats, rip them up and throw them away. Never enter into a new payment plan (with best intentions) with firms like these; any default after payments results in extension of the statute of limitations in your state (the period of time they have to sue you and get a judgement which lasts twenty years).
3) It is advisable to be responsive to notices from your local COURT. If you wish to avoid signing anything and being served personally, don't open your door when unexpected knocks or doorbell ringing occurs. The notice will eventually be taped to your door, and you will have 2-3 weeks to answer. Simply write that you are broke, out of work, living on Social Security, have no job prospects, and couldn't pay even if the debt was found to be valid by the Court. If you have valuable assets like land, home, car, that's a different story; if truly broke, these places (having done asset searches on you) are less likely to proceed with a claim in court, but may do so just to get a judgement, if only as a hedge against you possibly winning a future lottery or something. If you have assets, you should claim bankruptcy; if not, the expense is pointless, but be aware that any less valuable household things are still forfeit up to a certain point of exemption (depends on your state law). Virtually no collector bothers with you of you don't have assets that are easily liquidate-able without them paying out more court fees. Send a copy of your response to the Palintiff as well.

I'm reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. My employer recently had a telephone installed so that I could work occasionally from home. Portfolio Recovery is calling, isn't sure who their client is - but is trying to get information for basically who had the number before I got it. I can't switch the numbers - it's on all my business cards and letterhead.

They keep calling at the most obtrusive of times and new tactic - text messaging - which makes my voicemail go haywire and confuses my fax machine. As this is my work telephone number, technically this is illegal and harassment by calling me at my place of employment.

The telephone company won't help - but the BBB should or next step the State Attorney's Office.

If you were in a position to need a loan, you should be responsible enough to repay it back. If the terms of the loan are undesirable, the fault lies with yourself for accepting and signing the agreement. You are part of the problem with this country -  lazy and irresponsible mindsets.

They called claiming to take everthing i own
if certain bills are not paid immediately.  I have
tons of bills. Only essential bills, ie phone, light and water
will be paid.  Bills related to loans of any sort will
never be paid back by me. So as far as i am concern
they can call forever.

The whole banking industry is corrupt so they
have some nerve asking the very consumers
that they are fleecing to pay them back money
they owe.  When the banking industry almost
collapsed in 2008 due to their corrupted business
practices and had to be bailed out by the government
i decided that no banks or their affiliates were
worthy of repayment of money they loan to me.

If you notice nothing as changed with them.  They went
right back to paying out huge bonous to their
high level management personnels.

This is a bill collector.  They call a few times every week.  I believe this is a student loan recovery company.  Thing is, we don't nor never have had any student loans.  This all started for us about 10 years ago because my spouse has a similar name to someone else that lives in our same TOWN.  Somehow they think my spouse is this other person.  We actually had called and clarified that matter 10 years ago and thought this was done.  They have been calling for a couple of months now, but I am definitely not answering.  Like IFP, Inc.  this is a real low-life scumbag operation.  They don't even leave a message.

This company calls me daily about a debt that does not belong to me. They have my name and phone number, but the social security number, date of birth, and address they list are not mine. And yet, they continue to harass me. When I demand their name and address, they hang up. So I can't even mail a cease and desist letter! I am being harassed about a debt that isn't even mine. I reported them to the FTC for unfair debt collection practices and suggest you do the same.

I have been getting calls from this number for weeks. They won't answer when I pick up. I wouldn't mind so much if I owed someone money, but I don't owe anyone anything and they won't even answer the phone so I can set them straight.

A tip through my experiance, if you have caller ID, simply don't anwser when they call. The idiots have robo dialers that call a dozen or more people at once. From what I have read, the reason many times you hear silence on the other end is because some poor sap has anwsered and the high school drop out paid to harass people for them is talking to them and you are left with no one anwsering. From what I gather in my reading and experiance, if you anwser the phone it increases the likelyhood of you getting more calls. The idiots called me for a period of time and then stopped for about a year. Found out they had filed a suit against me and served it at an address I hadn't lived at for 10 years. Luckily I live in a state where the case cannot proceed without proper service. After anwsering the suit and hearing nothing back from them, I started to get phone calls again about a month ago. They are clowns. They can only win in court if you don't oppose them or show up, they almost never have what they need to counter someone who educates themself in how to oppose them in court. Not sure what the dumbasses think they will accomplish by calling me but again, they are dumbasses.

They keep calling, they never leave a message.  I don't owe any money to anyone, I pay all my bills timely.
Even though I don't owe any money to anyone I'm willing to pay Portfolio Recovery Associates an agreed upon amount if they would just stop trying to "shake me down".  I'm game...I know they are looking for Mafia Type "Protection Money".  I'll pay for them to stop; if only they would leave a message and tell me how much "Protection Money" they want to stop calling me.
