This really is American Express-if you don't believe them go through your merchant account phone number and call them back-but I have been dealing with them over an issue it really is them.

Got the same call i was playing along to see if real or not. Sound real at first. Then he ask me to verify by bank account number. I would and said I was going to call my merchant service to verify them. Instead they tried to get me to verify on their website. I still said I wouldn't give by bank info and was calling merchant service then they hung up on me.

Identified himself with American Express Merchant Services (sounded like he was from India). Wanted to verify our company's taxpayer ID# due to 1099-K data being incorrect. Would not give me any information so I wouldn't comply either. Called the company myself - still not sure if this was a phishing call or if there really was an error on the part of AMEX. Amex was not sure either!
