The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

These people are so stupid. They are harassing my family searching for me. They have gone as low as stating they are from the Bexar County Sheriffs Dept. And they have a warrent for my arrest. I have called the number back and it goes to a Group 1001 voicemail. What the heck! You think people would have enough common sence that if they want money get a real job and stop scamming people. Ugh Im tired of this, it happens to me almost ever year or every other month. Stop this crap!

These people have contacted friends of mine and one call even went to my brother in laws ex mother in law - NO relation to me at all.  The same thing as others have stated - looking for me to clear a matter on an unpaid Pay Day loan from 2011.  The couldn't give me a date or amount of the transaction but had my email address and last 4 digits of my SSN.  IT'S A SCAM!!  The guy calling is Mr. Mike Ross & he says he's the lead investegator in a fraud unit - the are from North Carolina.  Whe you call them direct they tell you the phone call is recorded but never let you speak to Mr Ross just the desk clerk (Alyssa). .instead he calls you back on a personal phone , not being recorded, to tell you to pay the loan.  I asked on 2 occasions for a written verification of the debt and Mr Ross said he doesn't have to give me anything along with a very professional response "You don't know the law & I'm the one who asks the questions, not you."  I laughed and he hung up after saying see you in court.  What a JOKE!!!!  Don't give them any information!!

They have called me twice, asking if I know a certain individual and referred to this individual as "The Defendant", referenced a Case No. and asked to call I knew and info on the whereabouts of this individual. I called the number and asked what the name of their company was and the name of the person I was speaking with. He said his name was "Mike Ross", and proceeded to ask if I know the individual, and I asked again what company he was with and he refused to answer. I said I'm not giving any information, but I  would like to know what the name of his company was and he hung up on me.

They must make a lot of money by scaring gullible people, because they've been pulling this scam for several years.  I get a call from these folks frequently, and I haven't been hauled into any court yet.  And I know I won't be.  Aside from the fact that I haven't defrauded any companies, some of their utterances are simply laughable and show ignorance of how the U.S. legal system works.  Example: they said that the court would "take away my Social Security number".  Yeah, right.  And they said that police work for law offices and help them catch deadbeats.  Yeah, right.  Don't let your blood pressure go up.  Laugh and hang up.  The so called "Indian scammers" are the most active group pulling this sort of stuff, but there's a group of Americans that's also running one of these, possibly out of the Midwest, and they're smaller, but more convincing.  They even scared me once, having a woman who claimed to work for our county government telling me that she was a process server going to come to my house or my office to serve a summons the next day.  I knew she was a fake, but I have to say that I was just a wee bit nervous for a day or two.

I received a call from 855267-9405 stating that there was a civil complaint and a possible criminal complaint that will be filed against me in regards to a payday loan from  Cash Mart from 2011.  I never received a loan from these people and know nothing about some loan.  They advised that they had my entire social security number and my signature.  I advised them to send me something in writing.

They just called my cell and then immediately following I received a call and voicemail from 407-966-4859.  The voicemail was a recording asking for me by name, calling me the defendant and giving a case number and phone number.
All previous records for the 407 number are about a free vacation scam.
