I thought it was a scam too.  So, I called a Prudential agent to get Prudential's home office number.  I called them and they confirmed that there are 2 policies under my father's name.  He passed away sever decades ago.  They will send you a letter for you and all heirs to fill out and mail back.  However, they won't tell you the value of the policies for several weeks.  Once they receive all of your paperwork, you should receive your settlement in 2-4 weeks time.

We got a white flimsy post card in the mail today with a number that looks like it is in the same series as the phone number used on your mother. 1-855-277-9740. The card claims we have won something and to call them with the claim number they gave us. It is very phishy looking so we aren't going to call and so far we can't find anything on the internet about the origins of this phone number. But here is an address that is written in mouse type and printed under the postal stamping: 5337 North Socrum Loop Road, Unit 145, Lakeland, FL. 33809.

I did also get this letter. I called the number & went through all info. It indeed was for my deceased fathers insurance (he died 7.5 years ago). His mom must have gotten it for him 50+ years ago. All that for a $249 check. But the point is: it is indeed all legit. I guess the feds are in agreement with Prudential & other insurance companies for not cross referencing policy holders with the death database. Pretty weird, I thought too. Got my check yesterday, October 24th. I got the letter on October 17th, called the number the next morning & was told it would be 4-6 weeks on the check. WOW!

I too got one of these mystery letters. I almost shredded it without opening cause i thought it might be junk mail. The letter was in reference to my father having a life insurance policy. I called the number, and I too was on hold for a long time. The lady I spoke to said that it was a very old policy that it dated back to 1953 and that my grandmother was the beneficiary (she died in 1974). My father died back in 2005. If this is all true my father was only 16 years old at the time, is this possible? I know that my father joined a union when he was young but wouldnt 16 be a little too young? I went to the missingmoney.com and looked my last name up and there is it was, listed for a liquidating dividend from prudential. They are sending me a claim form with a list of required documents needed to complete everything. I am still somewhat suspicious though

Everyone needs to call the Prudential Company themselves (the official number, in your phone book if you have one) to investigate.  Scammers also prowl internet threads to post that their phony numbers are legitimate.  There is no way to tell on one of these sites if the person reassuring you really figured it out, or if they are lying to you.  Scammers have even started posting their own copycat websites, for example the scam that claims to be fixing your computer and charges you $150.00--has a website that looks legitimate when you google it.  Find a local Prudential agent, check your printed phonebook...but don't take some internet person's word for it.  Scams are getting SMART!

I received a letter from Prudential as well, indicating I was a beneficiary on an insurance policy. I checked with a local Prudential office, which verified the telephone number as being a legitimate Prudential number. Based on that, I did call the number in the letter. During the call I was never asked for SS numbers. In my case, the policy is one taken out by the parents of my husband when he was a toddler 70 years ago. Since the parents have died, I am next in line as beneficiary. Check with your local Prudential office first, for your own peace of mind.

This is a follow-up to my previous posting.  The Prudential letter and phone number 855-277-8061 are legitimate.  The people who answered the phone were courteous and knowledgeable.  We have already received our payment from them.  In our case, our deceased was not the policy holder.  The policy was taken out on the deceased.  Hence our confusion.  Don't be afraid to call and answer their questions.

The state collects 35% of the funds/dividends. The cost of fedEx is also not free. So the Ins. only rolls over dividends & does NOT pay the intrest accrued. althought the state is collecting intrest on all property sent in. These policies are still not closed out. You have to continue to check their site weekly for maiden names, married names, etc. This is a ongoing monoply between Banks, retailers, utilities & Ins. & State Unclaimed Property. So how is this a free service ?

James J. Avery,Jr. is CEO of Prudential Ins. Thank You so much I am getting tons of grief on dormant payable policies from not only Prudential but Commonwealth & Metlife..The claims people keep telling me they cant access the info on old policies. so I am going to report them all with proof @ Dept of Insurance & Commerce, which regulate companies where policies (state where written)I am trying to close out all policies on my,deceased family members. These policies also have demutualization (stocks) payable, due to merging with other Ins. companies, therefore selling stock publicly on NYSE for Ins. capital gain-increasing their revenue/profitabilty.

Received the identical letter with the above listed phone number on April 19, 2013.
I spoke with an extremely bright and knowledgeable young woman who was most convincing in her answers to my many questions.

Since my husband had died in September, 1984, I thought "wow, they really are reaching pretty far back in their abandoned case review".   Am now awaiting the claims paperwork she said will soon follow.  A $2000 plus windfall after almost 30 years sounds pretty good to me.

I have emailed a local Prudential agent to check on this, but have not heard back yet.  I am usually pretty aware of scam calls, but do not believe this one was.

I got a letter that appeared to be from Prudential Life Insurance Company.  This number was listed on the letter.   As others, I was suspicious so I went to the website and called an 800- number for insurance claims.  The gentleman with whom I spoke transferred my call to the abandoned policies office and gave me the number 855-277-8061.   We'll see what happens but at least it's not a scam.  Whew!

We received the same type of letter in March 2013.  NBC news recently reported many insurance companies, not just Prudential, are contacting people who may be the beneficiary on a policy.  Even so, we remain skeptical due to the fact we did not know of any policy our deceased had with the company.  Our deceased kept immaculately well-organized records, so it does not seem possible.  And yet, who knows?

After reading advice already posted to this site, we called to have claim forms sent to us.  They will NOT send out any forms unless we can prove the name on the letter is indeed our deceased member.  They say they MUST have the deceased SSN, dob, and dod (there may be other information they MUST have, but they were not clear on that).  We decided to verify all of this with our local Prudential agent before proceeding.  It may be safer to wait until the policy proceeds have been remitted to the State.  The State is easy to deal with.

Went to my regional Prudential office yesterday and spoke with an insurance agent and this isn't a scam.  He did the computer stuff and talked with the unclaimed insurance department of Prudential and sure enough there is a policy that I am the beneficiary on.  We filled out the claim form and he said that I would have the money in 5 yo 7 days.  Did not cost me a dime for him to check it out and fill out the paper work. So, am hoping that some of you will come  back and check this site and see that it worked for me.  It was a policy that we had forgotten all about and in fact thought that it didn't exist any longer.  So, it is worth doing.  But I was thinking it was a scam and am glad that I went to a for sure Prudential office and did the work there.  It was a nice sum of money.  It would have ended up in the state controllers unclaimed money thing and would have cost me time and money to get it from the state.  Good luck you all

I am taking my letter from Prudential to a local Prudential office tomorrow to check it out.  I called the office and they have the claim forms there and will guide me through the process.  Will be able to find out if it is a scam or not at that time.  I also called the Prudential Insurance office phone number listed on current policies (not the number on the letter) I have and it seems to be on the up and up.  However, until I visit the insurance office I am not going to count on anything.  When I called the 800 Prudential number I insisted that the give me an amount of the policy and they did and since I would not provide any info they said that they would mail out a claim form.  I did not give out a SSA number.  Policies get lost and forgotten so am willing to visit my local office to check it out.  I thought I kept good track of our policies, but there is always a chance that I forgot something or lost one.  Am sure you father didn't keep secrets, he may have just forgotten one.  Good luck to you all.

I had the same type of message as the others.  I called Prudential (found the 800 phone number from their website), they verify the ID number left in the message, verified the 855 number for me, and then transferred me - actually a 3-way call to introduce me.  I had a death benefit that was unclaimed.  I was expecting a fraction of the face value of the benefit - you know a finders fee for the Keane group. Well I was wrong - I specifically asked if I lost a percentage and was told no; in fact, I had interest added onto the face value of the benefit.  Make the call to Prudential to ease any anxiety, but do make the call.  They will verify that you are who you claim to be and other security questions regarding the policy holder - large amounts of money are involved, so I am glad they are not just giving it away to anyone that happened to pick up the message.

It's legit. We just finished dealing with them (more or less) and the left hand doesn't have a clue what the right hand is doing. Don't let them do like they did with my mom and shuffle you from one representative to another. Do everything you can to only deal with ONE Prudential representative and good luck

Well, after months of  being jerked around by numerous incompetent Prudential Representative, my 82 yo mother FINALLY got two separate checks for a grand total of $1000. The whole process was ludicrous and took over 4 months to resolve and she rarely talked or corresponded with the same person twice.

My mom never knew about these 2 policies and various different Prudential Representative kept asking her, what the policies numbers were (which were actually included in the letters they were sending her) and if there were other beneficiaries (Names which Prudential also included in some of the letters to her). Then to top it of they kept asking her how much the policies were worth? Something she never did know until they finally sent her 2 separate checks last week.

Now what we have to figure out is, why they subtracted the interest which Prudential is supposed to have paid her as well. Something I'll be looking into this week

I called and also waited. Be patient; put your phone on speaker and do something else, like I did.  Finally someone got on the line and I gave them my mailing address only. I received via the USPS in a large white envelope with the Prudential logo, return address etc.several pages of forms that look legitimate to me. They also arrived with a large envelope with a return address for the Prudential office in PA. If it is a scam, they are going to great lengths to run it; including intercepting mail from the Prudential office in Philly, so I think it's OK. Good luck!

Yes, I received a letter stating on 11-12=2012 asking about my deceased father and they had a policy for him and asked me several several several questions, and yes I did give them lots of information because they said they had a prudential policy on him that had to have the forms filled out and done by 12-28-2012, He also called my sister she was not home he left a message for her to call him.  THIS IS JUST awful if this is a scam.  My, sister has all the things from my folks I did not get anything.  The man did keep me on the line along time.  IF THIS IS NOT REAL   WHAT DO I DO oh my gosh he has all kinds of information about my family from me.  HE SURE SOUNDED like all was real.  the number on the letter they sent had a caseID # and it stated Leigh Foster, Associate manager, claims.  He is suppose to send me forms to fill out and return.  THe number on my letter address to me was on Prudential stationary and the phone was 1-855-277-8061  Now I am really worried does anyone know what I do next. He did call my sister and left message for her to call him back.  Than, he called me back and told me that he left a message for her to call him back.   I just pray this was real I guess time will tell

Received letter from Prudential to call 1-855-277-8061.  I thought it was a scam.  Did not give them any DOB, DOD or SSN.  Called the Prudential 1-800 number and wanted to know if this was a scam.  Gave me 1-800 numbers to call to assure me this was not a scam.  I then called a friend that sells insurance - he verified that the number given to me was Prudential.  He also informed me that a lot of insurance companies are under government watch because they were not looking for people that had old claims that were on their books.  Instead they would wait and transfer to the state.  The government told them that they needed to do research to locate these claims.  Prudential is sending me forms to file a claim.  It sounded like a scam but it could be true.  Ask them to send forms and never, NEVER give SSN, DOB, DOD information over the phone.

I did the same thing. Got the letter in the mail, called in and gave all the info and then called back to verify it was a legit Prudential number before I faxed what they needed.  I was suspicious at first but the lady seemed to already know so much of the info that it did seem legit. I will check first next time, before answering any questions.

If it will go to the state then that is the safest way to find out.  Just check your state's unclaimed property website in a few months or years and it will be there.  I did and got a few hundred bucks.  Had nothing to do with this call, however.

Everyone should, every year or two, go to the unclaimed property website for every state they or their relatives have lived in and run all the names they've used.   Companies are always having to turn over unclaimed money to the state.  Usually there is a form you can fill out to show why you are entitled to it and you send in the documentation they ask for.   We found a tax refund for MIL and oil royalties for deceased FIL.  Insurance, utility deposits, forgotten bank accounts, there are various things the state could be holding. You don't need to pay a company to get it for you, either.
