Same happened to me.  I looked up Applecare and got an Indian guy.  He said that software support was not included in my plan.  I told him it had always been in the past.  He said that my software support had expired as it was only for one year.  I told him my applecare was for 3 years, and he said that was only for hardware...
He he could resolve my problem immediately if I renewed my plan, and gave me different prices for a one, two and three year plan.  He tried hard to sell me a 3 year plan for $300 plus!  He was not fast talking.  Actually he was very polite.  I didn't question it, as I really thought I'd dialed Applecare, from a number which i got from a Google search.   I was about to give him my card number and then decided something was off and hung up.  I called the Genius bar instead and made an appointment to go in.  The guy called me back 14 times!  The number on the call back was 800-237-3901.  Fortunately they didn't get my CC number.

I was trying to find the google search site where I got the number, but can't seem to locate it now in my search and have erased "history".

Ditto.  Looked up AppleCare.  Got this number.   Dialed without thinking.  Got a similar fast-talking Indian/Pakistani accented guy who assured me he would fix my problem.  He said I'd signed on ... somewhere ... to a wireless network that was corrupted.  He said he'd take control of my computer and iPad ....I just had to plug one into the other.  ANd that's when he pulled the "it's gonna cost you ..." routine.  By this time I was both angry and suspicious.  Told him I was late for an event (true) and would go to the Genius Bar (not true).  Called back today, with the correct number.  Got a lovely, intelligent, American speaking young lady who told me she hears about this scam the time.  She confirmed that:  1) Apple doesn't speak with a sub-Continental accent, 2) iPads don't get "corrupted" wifi network addresses, 3) my AppleCare contract does not distinguish between software and hardware support.  She went on to quickly fix two issues for me.

I plan to write to Apple.com/feedback and tell them and suggest you all do, too.  I'm sure they know about the problem, but perhaps with enough feedback they'll do something about how their listing appears in Google earches.
