Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Alfred Smith called my sister's number which is under my contract from this 855-329-7145 and then gave me this number to reach him in case if he lost service: 855-253-4758, not the number listed above. He could not give me details on where I got a loan from that was unpaid ($200). But, he said I have your address as and read to me my home address and my last four digits of my social security number. He told me that I needed to sit at home and await the police to pick me up for this unpaid loan! I asked if this was a joke. He proceeded to tell me that I was going to jail and was being sued for $10,000 for not paying the $200 fees on the said loan. I have no unpaid loans!! He also told me that there was a warrant for my arrest!! WTH??!!!??? How can this moron get away with this??? I almost had a heart attack while sitting in my sister's truck! What can we do to get this moron??? I am going to the police department in just a moment! I am not having this BS happen to me anymore.

I gotten a call from this number today. This man left me a voice message. I couldn't really understand him. I know it is a scammer because why would you tell a person to call back the next day to speak to your supervisor. If you are working for a real company. There should be more than one supervisor there or someone who is next in charge when the supervisor is not there. He can keep calling and I want be answering it. I will report this number to the law.

Extremely rude individuals.  Call I received was for another person, whom I have received 50+ calls for over the past few weeks.  Informed caller to my number of this same information--they have the wrong cell number.  I called back to speak to a supervisor, told to call tomorrow.  Realizing after reading this page--speaking to a supervisor will not make a difference, based on the amount of complaints listed here--it is not a reputable, professional business.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

I have been ignoring their calls for 3 days now.  I called back to investigate, heavily accented person who answered, reported they worked for Bureau of Student Investigations.  UUMMMMMM who?  I pursued, "what do you investigate?"  I was asked for my name, refused to give information.  Was told i would be disconnected. I am reporting to Ohio Attorney General office.  Everyone else should report to your state's attorney general.

My daughter received one of these calls and no way she was confirming her SSN. The last 4 digits of anyone's SSN can be found easily. Unless you give them your full number, they only have those last four digits. They bank on those who give them their full SSN not realizing what is happening. Massive damage can be done if you confirm, nothing can be done if you don't. My daughter kept calling them and asking questions about who they were and why they wanted her info and never got an answer aside from the above mentioned Lawyer, jail etc. bull crap. I called them this morning and used their own spiel on them. The guy (Josh) kept saying you want MY number, what number? I said your bank account number information so I could check to see if it's safe. He then asked for my number so he could call me back (I had used *67 to block my number) and I said H**L no I'm not giving you MY number. He curtly said "BYE" and hung up.

I received a phone call from Brad Nelson at this number this morning on my cell phone.  He left a message and then immediately called my work line.  He spoke with my coworker while I was helping a customer.  He then immediately called back, I spoke with him and he wouldn't give me any information.  he kept trying to confirm my ss#, I wouldn't do it and I suggest no one else does it.  This is a GIANT scam.  Block the number, ignore it, whatever, but do NOT fall for this.  They kept calling all my lines at work, hanging up and immediately calling back.

Again, DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION!  They just want to scam you from your money.  I don't normally fill these things out, but I was harassed for almost two hours this morning and got reprimanded at work for accidentally hanging up on my boss.

I am from Dallas and there is no such place as a Bureau of Investigation .(other than the Dallas FBI branch and Homeland Security). This is a scam and why would a lawyer who is suing you talk to you in the first place. They do get inventive with the lies to get your money though.

I received several calls from this number and the person was extremely rude.  Hey told me that The Bureau of Investigation in Dallas, Texas was investigating me regarding a legal matter.  The person's name was Daniel and he said he would contact my employer regarding this legal matted filed against me.  I immediately called my brother (who happens to  be a lawyer) and asked him to call them to stop them from calling me.  Unfortunately he was in court, so I called Daniel back and told him my attorney would be calling in within a few minutes.  Daniel hang up on me, stopped answering the phone and he has not called me again...so far. SCAM!!!
