The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

They called me about a month ago looking for my father in law. Knew his name and everything. Said he was in trouble for check fraud and they needed him to call their office by close of business. They called me about 4 times again today. I finally called them back and got some weird guy saying he had a warrant out for his arrest. When I showed little interest he got irate and asked me what type of daughter in law I was. Definitely a scam.

They called me incessantly on my cell phone.  I finally answered and they said it was a message for someone I didn't know.  I waited to speak with someone to tell them they had the wrong number, and they started threatening me, telling me the state of PA gave them the number and they would be notifying law enforcement.

Got message from an "Investigator Montana" from 1-855-345-7103 and he did not have my correct name and stated that I had several allegations made against me out of the State of Texas and I had not responded to the ten day notice sent to me and that I needed to call back immediately or they would submit to my county authority and to "govern" myself accordingly.     Needless to say I did not return the call as it sounded peculiar - glad I checked here first and got to see the comments.

I haven't received calls for Leslie Flores in a long time, but started receiving them again recently.  I told them to remove my #.  Supposedly they did.  We will see.  They were polite enough.  They answered the phone as Legal Processing when I called back.

These fools called me. Said they "worked for the state of Missouri collecting for ACE CAsh express and Pulaski Bank"!! Never had information with either.  Told me they "worked for the state of Missouri". I said.. Ok.. let me get the Attorney General's office on the phone to hear this conversation and confirm who you are. The lady told me I was "a dumb, ignorant Baboon". I said.. umm.. yep sounds like a State employee!  So I told her.. Ok.. I have the number to the Attorney General for Missouri's number I give my approval for them to listen in! She then said "They won't know who we are, we are a secret division and you are a stupid bit..."! I was like cool.. I'm so glad I recorded this call.. ACE Cash express right!  She then hung up. I told them to never call my number again. Oh.. they also call from 701-491-7809!

Called my friend saying that I needed to contact them otherwise I'm going to jail.saying they are a processor. Thought it was weird when the company that they claim to be with I haven't heard from. And they haven't tried collecting any money from or tried garnishing my wages. I called them and they told me I was going to jail for 90 days if I didn't come up with the money within 2 hours. I argued with them and recorded there conversation after he hung up the first time I called back and asked for an address to send a money order and they won't give me one. I would love to go after them.

Left message, from "Kyle Montana" as if that didn't sound fake enough. Says I hadn't responded to several 10 day notices about allegations charged against me. Very vague. Definitely scammer.

You will not be arrested in an hour.  Even if you did owe money, the summons would  be delivered by an officer of the court (and NO - you will not go to jail either).  Phone calls, texts or emails do NOT count .    It has been posted under several numbers that this may be an extortion ring operating in India (or out of the USA). If it was real, why would the company not answer the phone?

Same situation. Claimed to be calling for Check-N-Go in Oklahoma. Stated that they were calling to give me a heads up that the debtor was going to get an arrest warrant for felony check fraud and stated that I could deter the legal action by giving them $1035 in an hour. I tried to contact the company and got a number for the collections agency who owns the debt now. They wouldn't answer the phone.

got a call saying they were a collection agency for ACE cash express and that if I didn't have 60% of a huge amount of a loan that I did not borrow that today in one hour they would send it off to a prosecutor in Texas and I would be charged with a felony fraud HOT CHECK and would be spend jail time.
