Please read Gunnar's and Elspeth's post above. This is a scam op..

Google your name and phone numbers, any place like spokeo that shows up, make them remove it! Also if you have facebook, make sure your info is private! These people use any information they can find to try to extort money..

Both you and your brother in law need to report them.

Just got a call from my brother in law, he was working. He said he received a call on HIS CELL PHONE from someone looking for me to serve me some legal papers. How did they get his number or even know we are related, he has a different last name? (This is my sister's husband) They left him this number and a case number.

Just got a voicemail from this number and the message said they were looking for Anna with my same last name as mine (I don't know any Anna but its strange that they knew my last name.) and that a firm was taking legal action against her. They gave me a claim number too and the person calling is supposedly called Rick Howard. Never mentioned what company they worked for or company that was taking action towards Anna. Seemed like a scam to me.

I received a call but they asked for my ex-husbands wife's name.
Said it was legal and gave a case number which I am guessing now is bogus in order to know which scammed number got a hit.

The information in your comment is not clear - your boss shouldn't have gotten any "letters".  If you're being served a court summons, the process server does not call ahead of time, nor does he contact your workplace.  Per the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) you should NOT pay any caller who refuses to MAIL a debt validation letter showing that (1) you owe a debt and that (2) your caller has the legal right to collect said debt.  Refusal to mail this documentation within five days of their first call to you is a violation of federal law (the FDCPA).  Usually, when you get a caller or a letter saying to "save you the embarrassment" of being served at work, it's a scammer.  Read more information here:

Not!  Process servers don't call ahead of time. Ever!  They get paid to deliver legal documents. Now, think it through. If you got paid to deliver legal documents, would you call and let people know you were coming?
Sometimes it pays to just give a situation a wee bit of thought. That's the downfall for fraudulent debt collectors. They count on the element of surprise and hope for naivety, or innocence, to come in to play. Don't fall for their ploys.
Be Safe. Be Aware.

I got a call from that number yesterday as well. There's an awful lot of these scammers active lately, and they appear to originate in India and use Magic Jack and voip, as well as callet id spoofing to mske it appear as though they are in the USA.

Don't call the number. It's a scam.

Pretty convincing, but don't fall for it.
