Debt Collector
I received a call from Mr. Brown about a credit debt from many years ago, then he had one of his people to really push the issue for me to pay them. The second person told me that someone was on their way to my house to serve me papers and if I went to court it was cost me over $2500.00 dollars plus court cost.  So I did but when they tried to get the money and couldn't the called me immediately.  I am glad I researched this today so they can not make me a victim.  Do not give them any money and ask them for the creditor that you owe name, address, and phone number.

They keep calling my wife, talking about a document that must be given, and referring to an old address.   They use that same tactic repeatedly.  Company is WSG Assoc. 1439 W Chapman Ave, Ste 160, Orange, CA 92868.

This guy called my parents house and told my Dad that I was scheduled to be in court the next day in California.  And I live in Atlanta and have for over 6 years now.  Said they tried to serve me at an address I haven't lived at in almost 10 years. Had my Dad convinced I had done something wrong and wasn't telling him about it.  Gave him a case number and said I needed to call 855-441-4244 that day or I would be charged with failure to appear.  All lies... The law states that former creditors can only report on your credit report for up to 7 years but there's no limitation on how long they can pursue you for payment even if you paid them off.  They can make up all kinds of fees and say you owe thousands of dollars when you owe them nothing.  Yet there's nothing you can do about it.

I got a call from a Private Caller Private Number. It was from a man named Charles. He asked for me, but I was on my way out the door, so I just said "She isn't home right now" but that I could take a message. He proceeded to tell me that he tried to serve papers to my address on two different occasions (and wanted to verify if this was the correct address for the person he was looking for). He said if he didn't get the papers served within the next 24 hours, I would be charged for Failure To Appear in court. I asked if he had a number where he could be called back, he said that he was representing a client that he couldn't name. But for me to call the phone number 855-441-4244 with an ID # to go along with it. He also said he from legal claims with WFG Associates. I was really worried until I searched this number online and came to this site.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I had someone call me restricted and gave me this number for my father also saying legal documents. The lady I spoke with was so unprofessional, told me to grow up, called me pet names and Jung up in my face! I asked many time to speak to someone over her or for a corporate number and she laughed!

I called them, spoke at length about a debt that we never took out.   After finding out the account number and company where the charges supposedly originated - I called the company.  Their collection department doesn't outsource.  In addition, they had no files on record of my hubby's social number, birth date or name.

In addition, the company that supposedly charged us told us that the collection company HAS to provide a Proof of Debt Letter.  If they refuse, you do not have to pay.  From my research - this is a scam.  Do your due diligence!

I received the same phone call today for my husband. The 1st caller called from a restricted # claiming he had court documents and needed to serve my husband. He was being sued and was coming to our house between 3pm & 3:30pm (of coarse no one is home during those times.... we do work) The guy was very evasive and couldn't answer my questions. Also, he had an address my husband that he had not lived at for 15 years. I called my husband on 3 way and the guy gave us the # 855-441-4244 with a claim# to call to reschedule the time for someone to serve us because we sounded "nice" over the phone. He said we needed to do this so it didn't look like we were avoiding being served to the Judge. We called the # and spoke to a "Mr. Ramirez". I asked him if this was a collection agency and he said he was in "litigations". Well, long story short...he had a good talk off and I can't believe we fell for this scam. I was stupid and setup 2 payments to payoff a debt my husband had. The payments were setup for the next 2 Fridays. When I hung the phone this afternoon, I realized my stupid mistake. I did receive an email from "Mr. Ramirez" with a letter attached. It is a MS word document (not professional at all) with the company WFG & Associates & the address 1439 W Chapman Ave. Ste #160 Orange, CA 92868 which the address does  go to a UPS store in Orange CA. I tried to call the # back several times this afternoon and a recording kept picking up. I have already taking the necessary precautions with my bank and will be canceling my credit card to be on the safe side. I have replied back to "Mr. Ramirez" email twice advising him he misrepresented himself and this was a collections scam. If they processed my credit card, I will be reporting them to the Attorney Generals Office.

I checked my husband's Credit for all 3 credit agencies tonight and the collection account in question was not even listed. It was a credit card from the late 90's he had. Apparently, this company buys old collection debts & threatens people with lawsuits.  Please don't be fooled by WFG like I was. I definitely will not be fooled again.

A man left a message on my voicemail that I had a complaint pending against me and I would be served papers because I would be sued and I had to respond within 24 hrs. I returned the call when I retrieved my voice mail. I was transferred to this woman who had a Texas drawl of an accent who asked me to verify the last four of my SS#. When I did she informed me that I owed $600 from a bill which I had settled with Chevron since 2005. She claimed the amount was not satisfactory and they were going to sue me for the balance. I told her it was over 9 years ago and that what she was doing was illegal. Obviously she had information on my credit history because she started to name out all my creditors and proceeded to tell me that I was paying them and not paying Chevron. Fortunately the phone dropped the call and she did not call back. I decided to decided to google the phone # and here I am. I am also writing a letter to The Fair Trade Commission.

Don't be fooled by extortion dressed as debt collection. Consumer debts in America, including payday loans, are a *CIVIL* matter, not criminal! The agents' horrid threats are empty and their conduct is illegal. As early as possible it's critical to determine if your collector is domestic or yet another South Asian faker. The former you can sue into submission; the latter tend to be out of reach.

My notes from October 2011 on payday loan and "hot check" collectors are linked below.

I have received about five calls from an "unknown" number this week.  On one occasion, I answered; and this woman (who incorrectly said my name) told me she needed information from me.  I then proceeded to ask her who she was and with what company she was associated.  She said she had been hired to give me the message, but she didn't know who hired her and she said she could not give her name.  I hung up.  Today, I had a message left on my phone; and it was the same woman.  She said I had to call today to give her the information she needed and left a phone number for me to call.  The number was 855-441-4244.  She told me a legal complaint had been been received on me, and she needed to get papers to me. I then proceeded to search for the origin of that number, and this page was one of my searches.  It looks like we have all been told the same thing so obviously, it is a scam.                                         March 29, 2014

I got the same exact same call as Rashawn. "A woman called from a restricted number and asked if I was me? She then proceeded to say " I am from legal claims filing and would like to know if you will be home to receive documents? I told the woman I didn't know what it was regarding; played dumb basically ;she gave me a phone number to call and a file number. ---Only I never called back the number they gave me. Is there anyway to be sure this is fake I mean it really sounds fishy and I don't think they call you to tell you they will be serving you...this number needs to be reported.
