For at least the last year, an illegal group of debt collectors have been terrorizing consumers, their family, friends, and employers threatening to arrest the individual of an unpaid loan or other debt (their generally don't even owe).  Be aware debt is a civil matter, not a criminal matter, and you can't be arrested.  The threaten a warrant if the victim does not pay a sum of money by the credit card over the phone.

Although when pressed the callers give the victim an address in Columbia South Carolina (usually a vacant lot).  They are actually out of the Charlotte North Carolina area.  The scammers are using the following business names

Kaufmann and Associates
Sanderson Blaine & Associates
McKenzie Reid Associates
Kennedy, Kline, & Associates

Here is a set of links to a variety of threads on this forum that document this group and its behavior.  They include the experiences of victims as well as a former employee or two that quit within a week of finding out exactly what was going on.  They also include responses from consumer advocates and people who are really criminal justice professionals advising victims of what to do

Thank you kindly!  This information is very useful to many people.

And also, thanks for helping consumers by posting your story.  Folks like me can tell them it is a scam until I'm blue in the face and they don't listen.  When they hear it from some who worked there, then it registers with some!

Thanks again

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Per the FDCPA, you should not pay any caller who refuses to MAIL - do not accept email or fax - a debt validation letter showing that (1) you do owe a debt and that (2) your callers have the legal right to collect said debt.  Refusal to mail this DV letter within five days of their first call is a violation of federal law.  BTW, a bill or invoice is not "proof" that you owe anyone.  Please do report your callers to the FTC, FBI and your state's Attorney General.

Follow the steps in what you need to know. A legitimate debt collector agency should not have a problem with giving you a real business name and address you can google and verify via google street view, BBB etc.

First, sorry to hear you had to be exposed to that terrible situation.  Second, thanks for looking out for the folks and sharing their new name.

Several people are "tracking" them now and complaints are stacking up with a number of agencies.  There are several victims now taking action and as well.

We are also aware they are using the name of "Sanderson Blaine Associates" and have put up a new website (same format as the old ones) but is registered by foreign proxy (must be feeling the heat) and have evidence of them "Doxying" victims.

If you ever want to share any information (like other names they have used, managers/owners name -- we know one already)  you have my assurances the information will be put into the right hands ASAP

Received a recorded voice mail on my WIFE's cell number,  looking for a AD GUERRA, and referred to Case # CR2.........when I called they picked up the phone and said "Investigation" I said no criminal record or pending issue with my name....long story short, they said they were representing a Law Firm, I requested an Address, and they refused to provide one, so I said I can't give my credit card # without their information also they refused to send any mail through USPS.....so  then, they transfer me like 4 times,(to my native language Spanish, to English to someone speaking in a "ghetto" accent) ....and finally DUMDUMMDUMMM with "the one who runs the office" haha, (unprofessional and rude)  she said..."here is the deal ..I do the talk here..you are ready for court", she said..."How far you are from Palm Beach Gardens?" (I reply ONE HOUR) She said..."Is that Excursion in your driveway is yours" ( I reply yes) she said ..."Well Mr. Guerra, your case will be in court"....I said (Sarcastically) "Thanks"
I DO NOT GET IT......A LAW FIRM talking like that...hahahaha. They're such a joke.

They called my sister and told her I was a defendant in a case.  I called the number and spoke to 'investigator' Wanda Strong.  She said I had to pay $5000 or they would file papers in court.  I asked for her address she gave a PO box in SC.  She said they can't give out their physical address because people would show up at their office all the time.  I told her that if they are a law office you would think they would want clients.  she just pushed for payment.  I told her that I would pay, then she transferred me to the 'payment' department, and I hung up.  I knew she was bsing because she said the debt was from 2009 and I didn't have debt in 2009, she should have gotten her facts straight.
