Debt Collector
I just received a call from Russell Johnson which came in marked "Private Caller."  He informed me that I was being sued and that I could call Prescott & Associates at 1-855-676-6750 immediately to stop the Deputy Sheriff from coming out "within the hour" with him to serve me papers.  He also said he had my social security number and proceeded to give me the last 4 numbers (which ofcourse were bogus) and wanted to know if that was my SS number.  I told him basically to pound sand and when the Deputy Sheriff car pulled in my driveway and the officer came to my door,  would then open the door but he wasn't getting any info or anything else from me.  PLEASE BEWARE!!!!!

Debt Collector
Received a call today from this number in reference to my moms apparent debt. Several times I was told that a warrant would be issued for her arrest if I didn't accept the papers on her behalf. I asked several questions in which the answers changed. The so called attorney said his name was Frank Walker. He stated several times that he did not know the specific law for my state. I then informed him he is full of it since I did know the law. I told him I am a Sheriff Deputy and that his claim seemed completely false and that I would check on his information. Needless to say he ended the call quickly.

I received a call from this number as well. I had a similar call about 6 months ago from another "Collection" person and reported I had an unpaid loan from a bank I had not done business with in 6 years. They said in the message they were going to my work with the Sheriffs Deputies to serve me at work. At first I panic until I searching around and learned it was a scam. I spoke with the Police Department fault division and they asked me if I had given them any money, which I said no and then they told me the Sheriff's Department doesn't "Give you a heads up" they are coming to serve you.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I received a call from a private number and was told to call this number as it had to deal with me being served regarding a lawsuit against me.  I called and spoke to a Jack Thompson regarding a case which supposedly was for a loan I had taken out with a Bank of Delaware about three years ago.  The person could not tell me the exact amount of the loan but stated that I now owed around $3,000 and I would be served paperwork unless I made some arrangements to pay his company Potterscott & Associates.  When I was adamant that I did not know anything about this, he became agitated and I then ended the call.
