The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

The same guy called me, saying my son-in-law was going to be served.  The weirdest thing is that the home number they called me on is not even a number I use...it just came in a cable bundle a few months ago.  No one knows that number (that is related to me).  I told my daughter about it, but they decided not to call the 855-765-9655 #.  The "courrier" guy called me again today, saying he was going to serve the papers.  I called the above number and another guy answered, saying that he could probably "help my son-in-law out) if he contacted him immediately.  My daughter and I googled the number, and this is what we found!  It's a scam, for sure!

I received a threatening voice message for SOMEONE ELSE. The caller left the full name of this person, a case number, and MY ADDRESS!!! When I tried to call the 855 number back, it was an undisclosed company voice mail. Now I am left worrying that if I don't take the serve date off work that these slime balls will come to my home!   It is a frightening feeling.  The other issue is that some poor person had their privacy completely violated by leaving their name on my voice mail.  I am going to notify my local police department.

Just got my first two calls yesterday and today.  I am not elderly, but some may think so since my father uses my email for some senior citizen stuff.  I got the phone number you listed and another one from and electronic phone call, which is 855-775-2417.  The guy that called me is either Joel Beque ( Beck-you) or Joel Veccio ( Veck-ee-o).  The calls are (to me) an obvious attempt to sound professional without details and threating with the "you have been served".  They do not say they are collecting a debit to me, they say that someone has made a complaint against me and that I have to sign for a certified legal document.  The follow-up call today (not the electronic one from today by computer) was from this Joel character to confirm that I got the info. from his previous call and confirm date for service.  I suppose the certified document.  Watch out people, because with the computer resources out there, many documents can look legitimate.  Seth was very smart to contact the police and look into the situation.  Never, ever pay anyone a thing unless you have met with your lawyer first!

So this is a scam team. They are really nasty. They are actually targeting my parents and using scare tactics to try and coerce money from them. My mom got a call from a guy named Sam Stedman. He claims to be working with the King County Sheriff's office and he needs to serve me with papers. He says he is going to show up at my work, my home, and my previous home. He leaves a phone number and tells you to have me call 855 765 9655 and he gave me a case number.

Well he made it sound like he was a Sheriff from King County so I called the Sheriffs department in King County non emergency line and it turns out they are well aware of this scam. They told me to tell my mom to block the calls. The problem is they are using a blocked number so she has to call Verizon and have them find a way to block it. The really sad part is that I also called the number they gave and they don't want to talk to me. They want to talk to my parents. Upon further research it was discovered that when they get ahold of your parents they tell them that you owe x amount of money and have a judgment against you and if they don't receive x amount of money immediately then your child will be arrested. It turns out this is hitting the elderly community very hard. Many elderly people are giving them their savings to keep their children out of jail. But the saddest part is that this is just a scam team hitting the elderly. The worst of the worst for scammers who pray on the elderly. I made a complaint to the FBI last night and I also made a complaint to the state attorney general. This team needs to go down.

I got a call from this number 4 weeks ago regarding a very old payday loan(2002). The call was originally from an unknown number and the guys name was Stan Stedman. He left me a message in a threatening way and said I was going to get a summons delivered at 5pm the next day unless I called this number.855-765-9655. I called the number and another guy answered the phone and started telling me I was going to jail if I didn't pay. I told him to get a real job and if he called me again I would sue him for harassment. No calls since. I read online that this was a huge scam. Don't waste your time. This was never put on my credit report.
