My father got a call on his cell phone from 855-819-6106 this morning at 7am my time and they asked him if he knew me. He said yes, not realizing it was a scam and then she told him that I must call this number, there  is a law suit out for me and said I had put him down as a contact. He tried to ask where she was calling from but she would not tell him. She also had my name wrong at first and had to spell it for him. She gave him a case # of 7 digits starting with 125. My dad is in his 80's so of course this freaked him out and he was in panic when he called me to call them. Right away I knew it was some kind of scam, so I googled the phone #. Thank you for this posting, it helped me show him what is going on.

Another concern is that I have a friend who just signed up for "Secret Shopper" work and one of her 1st assignments was to buy some green dot cards. I have a walmart card and I read in one of these threads they are scamming people by having them deposit green dot balances into their walmart accts. (I may Have that a little mixed up) But just yesterday I asked her to give the secret shopper guy my number because we both thought it was legit work. Then I got leary when she told me he was wanting her to buy green dot cards and get a cashiers check (and then report on the experience). Does anyone know about this type of scam?
Has anyone else gotten calls from 855-819-6106 threatening a law suit?

My client was called by someone who told her to call this number to speak about a lawsuit against her.  She called this number and was spoken to very rudely and in a very unprofessional manner.  She tried to tell the person to whom she was speaking that she was not the debtor and did not know the debtor.  My client called me and asked me to call this number to clear this up for her.  When I did, I was also treated very rudely.  I kept my professional composure until I was asked how I could be so sure that the debtor did not have the phone number they had listed in their files.  I told the woman to whom I spoke that I knew my client and her family and that there was no one who had the name of the debtor.  I was threatened with a suit for harassment if I called them again, and she also threatened to sue my client for harassment if my client called them again.  She said she could not remove my client's telephone number as the contact number.  She would not give me the address of the company nor any information beyond that the company was "URG".

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
