The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I received a call regarding that same number today regarding a relitive and they said my name was also on a list.  I called and got a bunch of bull.  They tried to tell me I was responsable for the account also because I was the wife of the person and I was a referance.  No Way.  My husband has never taken a loan with the company they said the debt was from.
The girl on the phone was very rude and said to have your id ready when they come.  So I called back and desided to bug her as much as she bugged me.  Each time she hung up the phone in anger. (I loved it).

Company called and said that I was being investigated for fraud and I needed to call them back today or they would file papers with the court in my state. I am checking with the Office of Consumer Affairs and the Attorney General's Office as well.

It just keeps getting better and better. Received nasty voice message at work from "Jonathan Riley" of PCS Courier Service stating that I need to be at home within the hour because he has a court summons. If I am not there, he will try my place of work. If I ignore it he will hold me in contempt of court and get a warrant for my arrest. Since when do courier services act like a prosecuting attorney???  PCS Courier is a bona-fide delivery company in Michigan. The caller said to call back 855-875-8003 if I want to avoid jail. What a crock of excrement. But I sure would like to run this "Riley" down to the ground and get him arrested for terroristic threatening. It has to be illegal to threaten someone with arrest as a scare tactic.

They don't have any authority.  They have to go through the same court system as everyone else.

Yes, I got a call from the same number. They said they will serve me with papers and I would be in contempt of court if I didn't call them back within an hour.
Note that I received the voicemail at 11am this morning, and I just saw it at 4pm.
My wife is at home and nobody rang the doorbell there, and nobody came to my work.
They said it was something on behalf of PCS Carrier (or Career) Services.
Well, they actually said this was for my brother, and then they mentioned that they have papers for me as well.
I know everything that I may have signed with my brother and none of it is in any bad condition so as to summon a colleciton agency or anything like that.
So this is definitely bogus. Don't pay them any mind.

I recommend you check with your States Office of Consumer Affairs or the States Attorney General?s office in your State for more information.  I was given the following information:
Beckenridge Lawfirm
1-855-875-8003
Adam Banks beckenlawfirm@gmail.com
3850 Robinson Road
Amherst, NY
I was not able to locate the business, and I was suspicious of the email with the gmail.com suffice.  I would also recommend you contact the original creditor to verify who they have hired to handle the collection on the account.  I?m looking to the FTC and State Attorney?s office because I was threatened with fraud, and check charges.  I was also only given 30 minutes to accept an offer to settle, which was another red flag.  Debit Collectors should be registered to do business in your State, so please check before sending money.  Also, you should receive a statement or notification by mail from any legitimate debit collection agency.  Hope this will help ? arm yourself with the right info, and try to keep this out of court.

Received a call because apparently I am an "emergency contact" for my father and threatened to file warrants if I did not get him to call back within an hour. I'm not clear how a law firm or collection agency has authority to issue warrants.

Eitherway, number has been black listed.

Received voice message today threatening a lawsuit if I did not call back within the hour and make full restituion. The caller purported to be with a law firm "Beckinrdge" or "Breckinrdige" Law firm. Said their "in-house attorney" would proceed with a lawsuit in my home county if there was no return call. Attorneys don't bother to call and make threats, they just go ahead and sue. They tried calling me back several times after leaving the message, within 10 minutes of leaving the message, but the calls went to my voice mail.

revieved a call from an employee that gets a lot of collection calls. She asked for his supervisor, when she got voice mail, she called back and asked for someone that was available above that person. Then when I asked what it was regarding she asked if I was a lawyer, She then proceeded to tell be she has papers to serve. I told her I sent her to his supervisor. She then asked for that person.
I really do not see how calling someones employer for collection calls is effective. All it does is tie up my lines.
