I got a call from a man claiming he was a courrier and asking if I would be at an outdated address at the prearranged time. This was the 1st I had heard about it so I informed him that I live 1000 miles from there and have for the past 3 years. He gave me this # to call so I could find out what the documents he intended to deliver were about. I swear when I called the number the same guy picked up and then transfered me to this John Carver guy. The first question he asked me was my SSN, which I refused to give him, but told him the courrier had given me a case #. He then informed me this was about an old debt and asked for more than $3000. I told him the original debt 7 years ago was $800 and that I paid on it for four years which he then said yes but it wasn't paid off and I hadn't paid in 3 years. There is some truth in this so I asked him about my options and he offered me a settlement of $2000. I asked for a day to discuss it with my boyfriend and he said that was fine. As soon as I got home I looked up my credit report and the account was listed as "written off as bad debt" this made me leary so when I called him back the next day I asked for a ledger of the account And he threw a tantrum and yelled at me that he would put in for that paperwork and that the legal documents would be delivered and that no voluntary actions would be available and hung up on me. And that was when I stopped being nervous. There is no way any legitimate business man would act like a 3 yr old when he doesnt get his way. And... they do not have my current address :) On a side note: they have the deepest voices!!!

Got a couple of these calls -- left msgs on my wife's phone which is listed to me but only used by her for her personal business.   I never use this phone for business or personal -- and she only uses it for personal.  We know when someone calls with my name -- that they caller got my name from some list related to the cell provider.

Caller spoke very fast with a lot of mumbling.  Said papers would be served on Saturday -- unless I called back and I would need my SSC to confirm I was who I claimed to be!  Great, they're calling me and I have to prove to them who I am -- by giving out my personal info (SSN!)  -- Nah, ain't happenin'!

I ignored the call -- they called back a week or so later -- and I also ignored that one.  No one ever visited my home or work.

Clearly a scam ...

I received a call from a number today was a local number telling me they needed to deliver legal document on Thurs.  They called two times in a row.  I called the number left on the VM and it was for a bad debt with Credit One bank.  I was able to gather info that the company is Alliance Capital Management.  They pulled the same shenanigans with me about being the middle person and that Credit One is seeking legal action and the only way to stop the courier is to set up a payment plan or pay the debt in full.  After talking with "middle person" for several minutes and her telling me that she has no control, her job is just to help us work something out she offered me a settlement on the debt but it was a lump sum amount.  I of course was not about to pay it without something in writing from the company and no way was I going to pay a lump sum to which the story changed again and they had a 3 pay option available.  While I know they are a debt collector and the debt is even due...their tactics of scaring you into paying almost had me.  Had I not read this I would have set up a payment because I don't want legal action.

Got a vm from "Elizabeth Hubbell" at this number re: legal documents to be served via courier to either my home or work.  Called back asked what it was about, person on phone "John Carver" indicated "their client" (wouldn't say whom) was having the docs sent out for breach of contract re: an HSBC/Capital One credit card.  I have no idea what they're talking about.  Then they said the docs were being sent and should be returned indicating if I was going to hire counsel, file bankruptcy, or take care of it.  Uhhh, when I cited them for harassment, Mr. Carver became extremely rude, was talking/yelling over me, and kept patronizing the crap out of me saying he appreciated my concern over not knowing what the hell he was talking about, but he was just a messenger to let me know what the vm left was in regards to.  I said SURE, HAVE YOUR COURIER BRING IT TO MY OFFICE.  I work in a law office.  This is the kind of crap we laugh about on a daily basis.  It's a debt collector from probably a wayyy out of date debt and statute of limitations has more than likely run.  Stupid idiots.  Don't fall victim to this trap - they are illegally trying to obtain information.  Legal documents are NEVER forewarned or give prior notification of their arrival.  If they call again, claim they are HARASSING YOU and that you will report them to the FTC, the BBB, and your local congressperson.  Also tell them you know exactly what company they're calling from (even if you don't) and that you will have your lawyers be looking into their dubious ways of business. :D

Called claiming delivery of legal paper.  Told them to send it, so I would know who to sue for harassment.  Bunch of lowlife idiots.  No company name mentioned or information about what they want or who they are, not sure how they expect to collect anything if they wont give out basic info.  Bunch of numnuts.

I received two msgs from this number, saying they were sending legal documents by a certajn date and needed my information as to where I want them delivered, to my home or office. They tried to sound very professional. Sorry, but you don't get advance notice about legal documents and, they would know where to send them and wouldn't need me to tell them.  buzz off

I was called and a VM message was left on my cell by a John Morgan. No company name, no explanation of what the call was about except that legal notification was being delivered to my home on a Saturday, lucky for me I was out of town! I called (855) 893-2457, the phone rang a bunch of times, a VM message came on but the name was a Bill something (he talk so fast and had such a deeeeep voice, you can't understand what was said), no company name, no extension #, the only thing I could make out was that if you press "0" you would be switched to an operator. So I pushed the "0" and it rang a bunch of times, no one answered the phone, no message, no VM....NOTHING!! This is a scam and everyone needs to be made aware, but if you do choose to call, like I did, be prepared! Please see below QUESTIONS 1-9 and ask them all the questions, watch how fast they get defensive, mad and try to get out of the situation!
********REMEMBER DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION ABOUT YOU.....NOTHING....NOT A WORD!!******
1) What's the company Name? (ask them to spell it out completely, acting REALLY dumb works in this scenario...Lol)
2) What's YOUR first and last name? (have them spell it out completely, ask them over and over again to spell it out, act like your hard of hearing/deaf, have them spell it all out and make sure you repeat everything back to them incorrectly)
3) What's the office address your calling from? (repeat  #2)
4) What's your telephone number from the location your calling from? (repeat #2)
5) Why are you calling me? (repeat #2)
6) How did you get my name/information? (repeat #2)
7) What company hired you to collect? (repeat #2)
8) What is the file #? (repeat #2)
9) Ask them if their soul is protected by god and have they been saved/anointed because there are some horrible people out there trying to scam the good people for money and we all need to pray for the poor unprotected souls as they need our help in keeping the bad people away, ask them if they would please pray with you over the phone (have a long lengthy prayer already written up and make sure you include the words; theft, lying, coercion, fraud, deliberate dishonesty, ect...By the time you have done all of this you will have been on the phone with them over 30 min. and they will be out of their mind trying to get off the phone or in my case they hung up on me!! Good Luck!!

Just got a call from a local number +1 (314) 326-4184 stating they were coming by to drop off legal documents. I tried calling back and there was no answer. I called the 855# and it was the same lady who left me a vm stating that she's been calling me and I should already know about this. This is my first time hearing about this I got transferred to their "claims" department saying that I need to pay by checking or debit card. Told him didn't have the info and was rude saying when am I going to get it. Make sure to call the company they are referring to and deal with them directly.

Either outright scammers or junk debt buyers.  You NEVER get a heads up about being served a court summons - the process server just shows up.  Per the FDCPA you should not pay any caller who refuses to MAIL (do not accept fax or email) a debt validation letter showing that you owe a debt and that the caller has the legal right to collect said debt. Refusal to mail this DV letter within five days of the first call is a violation of federal law.  Even if you owe a debt you should not take the word of the caller that you owe them - the burden of proof is on debt collectors to show that you owe the money to them.  The alleged debtor doesn't have to prove anything, per the FDCPA.

Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
