On the official Dell Website this number is listed as the verification number. I had ordered a laptop the night before and signed up for dell credit. They called me the following morning asking for my info and gave this number (866) 228 9620. I got kind of worried that they asked for the info dealing with the order, but it makes sense. The lady was foreign and her English was a little hard to understand, but if I get screwed at least it's a number on dell's website and I know where to go for a suit. I hope this particular review makes it easier for someone who also actually bought something by applying for dell financing. It was just a pc confirmation and they lifted the "temporary hold" on my account. I'll maybe follow up.

They called home at least 20 times in the last month. They call at least twice a day stating that they are Dell Financial and that for security purposes they need information from us but we are like wtf you are calling us meaning you have the informations on us. They do not speak clearly and never finish there phrases. They keep repeating the same thing every single time and once I freaked out because they call at random hours. Like what company calls at 7h45 in the morning.

Same crap.  Just got off the phone with a woman who who cliamed to be from DELL's financial services department.  She was trying to verify if I had applied for credit with them.  I told her that I not only did not apply for credit, but I NEVER give out this cell phone number to people who I don't know.  I insisted that she tell me where she got it.  She told me that she was trying to prevent identity theft and that she needed to know if I had applied for credit.  The whole thing STUNK form the get go so I kept her on the phone.  I asked her what other information she had of mine.  She didn't respond.  I said that in order to prevent ID theft, I should be made aware of what other information she had.  I asked if she knew my first name, she said she did because I used it to identify myself when I answered the phone. I asked if she had my last name - she did.  She claims to not of had any other info.  I asked her for her name and she said Tess.  I asked for her last name.  Silence.  I said that I knew that DELL used employee numbers (I was bluffing).  She said hers was 390053.  She recited it very quickly and I had to ask her to repeat it twice.   I asked what kind of credit was being sought, she didn't know, her job was only to check off "yes" if I say that I had applied, or "no" if I didn't.  I asked if I could speak to her supervisor, she said yes and put me on hold for about 3 minutes after which time she got back on the phone and said that the Supervisor would have to call me back because she "couldn't transfer an outgoing call".  I asked where she was calling from, she said Texas - Fort Worth.  I asked her if the job market in Fort Worth was so bad that she had to work calling people on a Sunday night to try deceive them into giving out personal information.  She said she understands my concern and a supervisor would be calling me back  -- Can't wait to get a hold of this jack***.

got a call from 866-228-9620.  a pleasant american sounding gentleman told me that he was from dell computer credit.  he told me that someone applied for credit using my information.  he needed the last four digits of my SS#.  when i objected he said it was no big deal because he already has my name and phone number anyway and giving him just the last four digits of my SS# was no big deal.  i still objected.  he gave me the phone number to experian to put an alert on my credit report.  i suspect this is merely a continuation of the con.

Received a message from 1-866-228-9620 claiming to be Dell Financial services/Verification Dept Claiming they had an order from me. I ignored it figuring it was some kind of scam but then 2 days letter received another call from 1-800-456-3355. Called back and got through to a woman who informed me that I had ordered a digital camera. She then asked me for my Soc security #.  I of course laughed at her and told her that Dell or any legitimate business would never ask for SS# over the phone and hung up.

They may be calling because someone has placed an unauthorized order using your identity, and they are trying to verify if the order is fraudulent.

I acutally got a letter in the mail (dated 3/20/08) that said I had ordered something and my order was currently on hold. Dell had been trying to reach me (most likely on my home phone, but since i never answer it, I guess i never got their call) and they weren't going to send me my order until i called to confirm it. I was suspicious about the letter to begin with, especially since I KNOW I didn't order anything, and when I called the #, its rose my suspisions even more. I have NEVER called ANY finance company and acutally had someone pick up the phone without going through a menu of prompts and inputs first. Then the guy that answered went right into his script about needing to verify information withhout so much as asking me my name or account #, definetly a scam.

I got a letter claiming to be from Dell Financial Services stating that an order had been placed on my preferred account, and that several unsuccessful attempts to contact me have been made and asking me to call this number (866-228-9620) to verify my information. I received no such "unsuccessful contact attempts."

Naturally I found this suspicious so I called Dell Financial Services directly at 800-283-2210 (this number can be found on their official website www.dell.com). The person I spoke with confirmed that 866-228-9620 is a number for their internal verification department and transferred me there, where the lady I spoke with told me that the "An order has been placed on your account, please call us to verify or your order may be canceled" letter is a standard letter that is routinely mailed out to people with information on file. Her exact words were "whether an order has been made or not, this is just something we do to get people to call and verify their information so we can prevent identity theft."

So yes- very, very shady business practice, scare tactics, but hopefully the knowledge that this is indeed a Dell Financial Services number will put some people's minds at ease. I had a very stressful night/morning over this so hopefully this will help some people.

I'm not sure about the legitimacy of RECEIVING calls from this number, however. If you receive any suspicious contact from Dell, via phone or mail, it is probably best to call them back directly at either 800-283-2210 (Dell Financial Services) or 800-WWW-DELL and try to verify your suspicions that way.
