Received a phone call/voicemail from 866-266-3424 on our landline calling from the Verizon Data Usage Verification Unit. 0ur telecommuncations usage was too high or something but the message was very hard to understand due to poor language skills and speaking very fast. Sounded like it was made from a call center, The message was to call back with our account number and PIN. I checked our wireless usage and the there is not a problem. Called *611 and verified we were ok on data usage. Sounds like a scam?

This is the Verizon Usage Verification Center.

We contact customers to ensure they are, 1.) Aware of usage on their lines, generally either high toll cost or international usage we have not previously seen, and 2.) Have the financial ability to pay bills at the level their charges are currently at.  I.E., you normally pay $100 bills and suddenly are billing for $500 in 2 days.

It can be an inconvenience, but we do not harass, we always attempt to contact customers via their Verizon landline, or through letters that refer them to an 877 number which redirects to our department.

If you are still iffy, call the Verizon Customer Service number located on your bills, and ask to be transferred to the Usage Verification Center (formerly known as High Toll Fraud), and that should assuage your suspicions, since the number is on the official bill sent out to you by the company.

I've never made an international call on my Verizon account before, but I had to call India three times in the last two days.  I incurred a $265 charge for those three calls. (Ouch!) As a result, they blocked my ability to make international calls until I called them and verified that it was me making the calls.  They're just  doing their job!  Admittedly it sounds just like a scam, particularly when they tell you to have your account number ready.  But how else can they verify that it's you and not someone who hacked your phone line?

I have worked for this department for over 8 years. We are legitimate. “We verify that our customers are aware of calls being placed (long distance/ international) or received (collect) over the Verizon network on their account, verify that they have paid telephone bills at the level they are currently billing at (for high priced usage), verify their accounts remain current (not past due), and monitor for fraud.” I can honestly say I have been able to help many customers over the years resolve many issues, before they get a bill or know that there is a problem. If you receive a call from us, please call us back so we can help you. Our guidelines require that we verify security before releasing account details to anyone calling in. This is only to protect our customers. I suggest that you call your customer service department and add a password, not just on your Verizon Account. Doing so will protect you from outside parties from changing or stealing your information.

To the employees of Verizon posting messages here.  It sounds like the number and department are legitimate, but it also sounds like the Verizon employees calling and leaving message speak so fast that we, the consumers, can not understand the message, and therefore are skeptical.

I personally listened to my message 10 times and still did not get the number right.  The only way I figured out the number of who was calling is because I did understand the Verizon Usage Verification Center (had to listen 4 times to get the 'Verizon' name and another 5 times to the word 'usage', even then I was not sure).

The point here is that everyone thinks this is a scam!  So....I suggest, when you are talking to the consumer and/or leaving a message.....SPEAK SLOWER and leave clear messages!  Maybe even say "We are calling to verify long distance calls from your phone number....".  Or something to that effect.

Good luck.

Regarding Leo's post:

We're not allowed by company policy and FCC regulations to release any information to anyone except the account holder or their authorized contacts, so the voice mail has to be rather vague.  The rep should have stated our department name, contact number, what to have available when returning the call, and that it was not in regards to sales, however.  But anything else is technically illegal, since if we explained the whole issue on the voicemail and it was a shared machine or something of that nature, we'd be releasing account information to people who might not be authorized.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

It is a real number and as other posts have stated, they are checking up on international calls that have been made that seem out of the ordinary for your account. I did tell them I did not feel comfortable giving out my account number. They asked me a number of other questions like what was my last payment. That was good enough for them to move on with the purpose of the call without me divulging the account number.

Regardless, it was a legit and worthy call. Just wish they wern't so cryptic in the voice mail they leave.

Totally legitimate number at Verizon for High Toll Call Volume.

I was not on a Verizon International Call Plan and made a call to South Korea lasting 35 minutes. I verified that I did make the call (to the tune of $165 at around $4.75 per minute). They were very helpful and suggested that I contact Customer Service and sign up for a plan and see if they can roll this call into that plan so I would not be charged as much. They connected me with Customer Service which I am speaking with now and that is exactly what they are trying to do.

So, YES, this is a LEGITIMATE VERIZON NUMBER.

I received one of these voicemails on 10/15/09, identifying the caller as Verizon (Usage, I guess) Verification and was told to call 866-266-3424. Being suspicious I called this morning the information number given on my Verizon Wireless bill, 1-877-214-4572. The very helpful person that I spoke with called the number in question, ....3424, and found it to be a "very legitimate number". It is a department that calls about unusual usage, either on your cell phone or your landline. It turns out that they were calling me about some landline calls to Canada, calls that I had indeed made. So it appears that no one should be suspicious of calling 866-266-3424. Case closed?

The caller left a voice mail asking me to return the call with my account number available.  Returned the call.  They just wanted to verify the recent phone calls we made to South Africa were legit.  They were.  Do gotta' wonder why they called our number to verify calls originating from our number ....

Received a voicemail message telling me to call Verizon Usage Verification at the 866-266-3424 number, and required me to have my account number ready. I called, and they would not continue the phone call without my account number, which I don't have handy since I am now paperless with my invoices, then they gave me a disconnected local number to call in order to get my account information. They claimed they would be available until 11 p.m. to take my call once I got my account number info. Suspicious, I called the Verizon customer service department phone number I have programmed into my cell phone to verify, and they warned me not to call the local number nor provide my account number to them; and directed me to contact the Verizon Encore department during business hours 8-6, M-F. They did say the 866 number is a legitimate Verizon toll-free number, but reiterated that I go through Verizon Encore to inquire about my account.

Received two calls in two weeks from this number. First time they identified themselves simply as "Verizon" The second time as "The Verizon High Toll Fraud Department".
I also received a suspicious-looking letter in the mail from this "department" with a different phone number to call. They threatened that my phone service could be turned off within 72 hours if I did not contact them.
They always ask that I have my Verizon account number handy.
