Called BoFa. This is a legit number. If you worry, you can call BoFa financial department on their official number and ask them to transfer you to the automated W9 filling service.

This IS a Bank of America Number. It is the w-9 verification unit. I work in that unit. Call bank of America at the number you usually call for your service and we will verify that number for you!

I am surprised nobody has figured this out by now. I got a similar letter with the same phone number and I called bankofamerica directly. Come to find out it is legit. If you have any doubt just call your local bankofamerica and they will verify it.

I also received a letter asking for my SSN or my ITIN. The callback number listed was 866-327-0702. The scary part is that they had my account number, and the letter was addressed in the same manner as is my account statement.

It seems to have been sent in an official BoA letter with postage paid. This is very scary.

Thanks guys for listing this.  I received the piece of MAIL as well with Bank of America Logo -- figured it was scam as it was asking for tax info and to fill-out a W-9 (?!).  It had the 2 phone numbers you all mentioned; I googled one of the numbers and the word "scam" - very handy process - and found all of your emails.

Next step was to call BofA to verify, but as you all have confirmed that it is a scam - I mailed the whole piece of mail to BOFA to research into.  Bravo team!  This scammer's a dud because of sites like this.

I received a similar letter, which looked like it came from bank of america. The quality of the print on the letter made me suspicious. In the letter they asked to confirm TIN/SSN by calling some numbers or mailing back the letter to a address in Columbia SC. PO box was 100289. The numbers they provided are 1-866-736-4320 for California customers and 1-866-327-0702 for others. These numbers did not look like real bank of america telephone numbers. I also called the BofC customer service and asked if they really sent those letters. They did not have any record of sending such letter to me. It was a SCAM letter to steal identity.. I wonder who sells our address information to such scammers

I just received a generic letter ("Dear Valued Bank of America Customer") which states that I need to to  certify my taxpayers identification number by sending in a W-9 form.  The letter also states that "Per IRS requirements, federal backup withholding has begun on interest paid to your account(s)".  A W-9 form was also inclosed, which already has my maiden name, address and SSN on preprinted on it and a return envelope (not stamped) addressed to "BANK OF AMERICA TAX REPORTING KS1-901-01-20 PO BOX 2948 WICHITA KS 67201-2948".  I just called the number on the back of my debit card and spoke with a rep for BofA who told me that they do send out these letters randomly to confirm they have current info for customers.  I told her that I still do not feel comfortable mailing in the form and she advised that I take the form into a banking center to verify it's validity and find out why this is being requested.  I have been a BofA customer for over 12 years and I have never received anything like this.  The only reason I can see that this might be valid is that I did recently change my name after getting married.  Still doesn't feel right...

Big ol' Scam!!! Dont fall for it!!!! They automatically know what your calling for when you call. Pretty stupid. Does the automated machine have caller I.D. ? Bank of America has no attachment to this number.

I believe Skip and Frank may be part of this scam. If that is so then we all need to follow some rules so we do not get trapped into a scam. I will do what Lynn is doing and bring the letter to the bank. Hopefully if they get enough letters they can turn it over to some law enforcement agency.

sorry, but you are not correct.  I have just received a letter, a very unprofessional looking letter supposedly from Bank of America which tells me I need to call the 866-327-0702 number and verify my SS# or to send in the enclosed form to verify.  I got online and chatted with BOA customer service and they confirmed my suspicions "that this number is NOT a valid Bank of America number" and they said do NOT call this number.  They reminded me that BOA never asks for information like this in letters or e-mails.  Customer Service rep also asked that I take this letter into my BOA branch so they could further look into this fraud.  Which we are doing today.

Keep in mind you had to provide this information when you opened the account, so why would you have to verify it again through the mail or in a phone call.  So be careful folks, and question anything that asks for personal information especially your SS#.

that is 100% untrue.  if you receive calls from this number, it is most likely a scam.  but 866-327-0702 IS a real bank of america number used to verify your tax identification number.  call 800-432-1000 and ask if you don't believe me.

Do not fall for this scam.  866-327-0702 is a identity scam.  This is not a REAL Bank of America number.  The reference to 800-432-1000 (the real Bank of America number) is to get you to call the fake number so that your personal identification information can be stolen.  Report the emails, letters, and phone call to the REAL Bank of America number which is 800-432-1000.
