A guy from 18665637673 called me. I asked him what company it is. He refused to tell me. I think they are bad people so don't call them back. Very annoying!

I didn't call back and ended up with a collection status on my credit report, which lowered my score by 200 points. Good luck getting that removed. Can't be done!

Don't know what they want because they don't seem to answer.  Once waited for 20 minutes and another time almost 30 minutes.  If it's that important I guess they will have a real person actually call me.

Just so everyone knows, & this will-p****off the collection agents: by Federal Law, a collection agency has the power to "Ask You to pay your bill and offer assistance in setting up a payment schedule" That is all.

1) they are never allowed to call you at your place of employment for any reason.
2) they can not, under any circumstances, harrass you into payment, by phone, mail or in person & they may not threaten you or your credit standing in any way.
3) You do not have to deal with a collection agency at any time. You are only obligated to deal with the original creditor, even if the agency has bought the account from them. You do not have to deal with them. 4) a collection agency can not put negative information on your credit file.
5) so in short... all they can do is "nicely" ask you to pay your bill. But we all know that they generally go way beyond that.

If you are having a problem with an agency, call the consumer bureau and report them and if it is a serious harrassment issue, or call at your place of employment, contact the police and file charges. These are federal laws that they must follow, but most offen do not and will push it to the limit. Yes, several collectors have been fired and / or charged under these laws. Some even jailed. Their employers usually get a fine & tell the authorities they never asked the employee to do that, thus leaving the employee on their own to take the blame. True sharks in every way.
If you are having financial issues, & most people do at one point or another in their lives, call a credit councilling service in your area. They are a free service in every province and will assist you. Do not deal with collectors on your own. If you can not afford to pay, the service will understand & work with you, without any judgement toward you, and no credit bruising. The calls stop immediately.

Called me and kept repeatedly asking my name, which I refused to give. When I asked where she was calling from, she blurted out some company name really fast and refused to repeat it.  Then told me I had an outstanding bill over $1100 in Alberta ( where I have never lived) and I needed to clear this up immediately. Said I'd never lived there. She said, fine, Ontario then, or wherever it was you were. And then demanded that I give her my credit card # to clear this up immediately. Insisted we clear this up immediately. I told her we weren't discussing anything and I had no credit card. She screamed "you're lying! everybody has a credit card". I hung up and reported the call to the RCMP phone fraud.

There is no law that states a person has to answer their door when someone comes to it.  Nor is there a law that states a person has to answer their telephone when it rings.  Neither is there a law that states that a person must return a telephone call if the calling party leaves a message!!!

Collection agencies only exist because people fall prey to their bullying tactics.  If people would just stop paying them, the collection agencies would quickly go out of business.  Yes collection agencies threaten to take legal action, however these are only threats.  It costs the collection agency a lot of money to start litigation, and many collection agencies simply do not have the financial recourses to
follow through with the cowardly threat.  Should the case ever get to the judge, the judge may or may not rule in favour of the collection agency, it is all dependant upon the ability of the defendant to pay.  And if the judge does rule in favour of the collection agency, then the collection agency will get a judgement summons in their favour, which is a piece of paper stating that the collection agency has a judgment summons.  And everything simply goes back to square one.
There is no debtor's jail in Canada, however I would strongly suggest that if a collection agency does commence litigation proceedings, then by all means comply with the request and follow-through with the instructions on the summons.  Ignoring the summons will allow the collection agency to win by default, which is what the collection agency is hoping for, and the collection agency might get a Committal Order against the debtor which will allow the collection agency to have the debtor put in jail for 3 or 5 days, all at the initial expense of the collection agency I might add.
Collection agencies are NOT in the Litigation Business, they are in the Debt Collection Business.  So if they threaten with "WE" might sue, "WE" will probably sue, then their threat is simply just a passive threat.
People should only be concerned if a Summons is received, and that Summons will cost the Collection Agency money up-front.
The Collection Agency will not file a summons if they do have the correct address of the debtor.  So my advice would be to not provide the Collection Agency with any details whatsoever.  Therefore it is best NOT to take their call or return their call!!!
Thank the lucky-stars for Caller ID and VoiceMail
One point to consider is this...  If a collection agency is serious about collecting a bad debt, they would send a collector to your home and/or immediately start litigation.  They would not hide in an office making cowardly threats over the telephone.
