Thank you for your post.

Lots of good info and, more importantly, illustrates why it's important to negotiate directly with the Department of Education rather than an outfit like them.

(btw, Conserve is on thin ice with BBB & FTC, wouldn't count on anybody renewing with them)

Dear Conserve collector,

I attempted to read your posting but it is nearly incomprehensible due to lack of punctuation and misuse of language.

Debt Collector
I called them to make sure they would not take my taxes. I'm a single mother of 2 with $700 for rent among other bills. They wants like $400 a month, lol seriously. So we worked something out for $148 a month but at the time I did not have a checking acct so I ordered a prepaid visa to use. While waiting for the card to come in mail, i get a letter stating they took my takes and threaten to garnish my check in the same time frame, WTF, I was told they can not do both in a year. Now they are garnishing double the amount and I'm falling behind in rent and have no money to take my kids school shopping. trying to find another company to work with or else I'm gonna have to start stripping to keep the basics for my children. Conserve is a joke! and they will take the clothes off your back.

Debt Collector
We have been getting phone calls from this company relentlessly - nights, days and weekends, asking for my step-daughter, who had listed her father as a reference.  We've explained numerous times that she is an adult, does not live here, does not speak to us, and we do NOT pay her bills!  We've asked to be taken off of Conserve's calling list, yet they continue to call and call and call. PLEASE STOP HARASSING US.

I have a different problem with Conserve. I am trying to reach them regarding my debt and they are making it excessively difficult. I have to pay for the call because I am calling internationally. After being on the line for nearly 7 minutes to go through the automated messages, I was, again, put on hold to wait for my representative for additional minutes, so I hung up.

I figured I could contact them through their web site. There is no way to send them a message! I must log in, but I don't have a password and there is no way to contact them without logging in. I tried to set a password and the link didn't work.

All I want is for them to send my current debt information to my email address. I am trying to do the right thing and I don't really need or want to speak to anyone.

These people raking in enormous profits. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/09/business/on ... ?pagewanted=all

The services they are providing are despicable and degrading.

What gives you entitlement to borrow money from a bank and not have to pay it back? Regardless of how old the debt is it is still money you borrowed.

First, by law, you do NOT have to deal with ANY collection agency. You have the right to deal only with the original creditor. Send creditor a Cease and Desist letter, Certified Mail Return Reciept.
Make note of all the dates, times you are called. If the calls continue after the C&D has been recieved, they are breaking the law.

If you tell them, NOT to contact you at work, they can't period. You must note the date time place and if possible who called you, from what phone number to have evidence for later. If you tell them verbally, you MUST follow up in writing, with the certified so you have evidence.

A reputable collection agency will stop calling you. If they do not, keep great records, you'll need them, keep recordings. Seek legal counsel, you have a legitimate case. This applies to all collectors by the way.

Second, student loans do not go away, but the original creditor will work with you. Call them directly, pay something per month, anything, there are loads of programs, if you do owe the money, they will work with you, at less then the collection agency. Contact them its your best bet to saving tons of problems.

Thrid, where you don't want to be. Student Loans and any creditor, can eventually bring suit for payment. You can pay an attorney to defend you, but don't forget, not just the amount your paying, but your credit is suffering here also. Lien's and judgements no fun, and that's seven years of lower credit scores.

Knowledge is power, review the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act on line, collection agency's count on you not knowing the law in many instances.

Hope this information helps, I've been there and this is what I learned. Hope my experiance saves you from some of the hassle.

I would never deal with a collection agency. You simply fire them...hire a lawyer, or do it yourself. You file a cease and desist letter and contact the creditor directly to work out a repayment schedule. You are basically ...no I take that back. You ARE repaying the debt PLUS their salary for collecting it from you.  I don't believe in not paying a debt but, on the other hand, if for unforseen reasons you wind up in a situation where you fall behind and it is turned over to a collection agency then, you should fire them and do as I stated above because it is, as you see, to your own benefit. I'd still go to an attorney if I were you. I'd also change jobs so the attorney had time to get the wheels in motion to save you from having so much taken out of your check.

This is a legitimate company contracted by the Dept of Edu (A Government Run Department)to help collect a debt.  COLLECTOR had/has some great advice and ANYONE who is dealing with Student Loan Default should HIGHLY follow his advice.

I just went through this and it was a God send.  Even though my payments were high, I was able to get out of Default and repair the damage going into defaut did to my credit.  And lets face it, CREDIT IS EVERYTHING is today's world.  So even if you cannot manage high payments (mine was $448.59 per month for 10 months and that was low) REMEMBER: It's only money and it's worth it to find a way to pay for it NOW before they (the government) garnish your wages, take your tax refund and basically ruin you financially until you pay it off for good.

Carpi Diem!
Get 'Er Done!

Whatever it takes to pay it off NOW, trust me, its worth it!!!

My boyfriend received a call from them on his cell phone number. I do not have a student loan and haven't started classes yet. His cell phone is only associated with me as an emergency contact on my school application. They wouldn't tell them who they were or what the call was in regards to and hung up when he told them I wasn't available.

I'm curious if other people have received contact from them in regards to a student loan debt, that also never had a loan.

I get several calls a week from Conserve.  They harass my husband and my children. Now they have even resorted to threatening us.  They tell you they are not a collection agency but part of the department of education.  Yes,  I have defaulted student loans and some that I paid off.  I consolidated the remainder of the loans while I was pregnant a few years ago and was told that they would go into deferment for 1 year due to my illness while I was pregnant.  It was a scam.  Oh they where consolidated all right, but not deferred.  Now I am disabled due to 2 major strokes and 6 mini strokes.  The first of which happened July of 09.  I have been fighting for my disability ever since, and have informed Conserve of this every time that they call.  However, today world being what it is, my Dr. will not fill out my paperwork for forgiveness until my Social Security gets approved, even though SS own Dr. tell them I am disabled, but because I am only 39 SSA is fighting it all the way.  With the loss of my being able to work out income has been cut drastically and my family have had to resort to using food stamps and medicaid, and barely get the regular bills paid before they get turned off.  We haven't lived beyond our means.  We had no credit cards or car loans.  We always paid cash, but are barely surviving.  Now they have started threatening us, not just harassing us.  This company really is relentless and cruel.  I understand that I borrowed the money, I also understand that I signed for the policy that is suppose to forgive my loans when I became disabled.  They refuse to wait for the Dr. to sign their papers and for me to jump through their hoops.  Be careful they really will pursue you, harass you and threaten you.  They will even interrogate your kids if they answer the phone.

I'd like to know who that person was...the grammer was atrocious, not to mention the anger level. There are alot of scams out there and I would definitely be suspicious of anything of that nature. My daughter finds out she can't register for school because of a book that was supposedly lost. She finds out at least a year after the fact, no notification from the school. As I said she finds out when she goes to register. Now the debt is in collections...for $60 more. She just wanted to be able to talk to them, and can't seem to get a live person on the phone, when she does, the first thing they ask for is her SS #, when she tells them she's uncomfortable with giving that, they ask for her last name, first name...no record...the Dept of Ed really does business with a company like this?? My daughter's name is not too unusual, last name is common, but first name is NOT. It should have come up if the debt was legit. And her Pell was supposed to pay for the book in the first place. She's totally on her own, couldn't be prouder and has worked above and beyond to get there, and then she gets screwed like this...don't need it.

I don't know who the hell this place thinks they are. The DoE is already getting money from me, and they haven't asked me for any more. Now I get this place calling my job and leaving messages for me *before* even trying to contact me at home. Now I'm in s**t with my supervisor,  my manager, the dayshift manager, and the dayshift supervisor whose time they wasted.

If this outfit is really representing the Dept. of Education they would have my current address and home phone (which haven't changed in 8 years)

This place is definately hitting at least a 6 on Bu***hit-o-Meter.

Here's My Story

Got a call from these folks, turns out it was conserve and i did owe a debt. Old student loan that i thought was out of date. hey tried to take some report about my income, i laughed and hung up,. Next day like clock work got a call this time didnt even pick up let it go to vm. went on for like 2 weeks everyday like clockwork. I had fun with them a couple of times where i would pick up breath and hang up, stuff like that. Guess that was the wrong move. This all happen early summer.  End up getting a letter from the IRS like i get every year and there taking my taxes. With my two children they are getting a hunk of money towards my student loan so screw them i thought. Wrong move again. Theyse people kept calling my home and it got irratating. Next thing  know the had my cell phone number 3 got dame days after i had it turned on through a huge wirless company. Then they found my job........... This is where the trouble started. I didnt want them calling all the time so i decided to talk. I owed allot of money for my education and i wanted to start paying something back. They finnally got through that income report thing and turns out they stated The dept of education was asking for about 6k down and about $500 a month. I laughed offered 50 bucks a month , they said no i told them to never call me again said somer profanties and hung up. 2 weeks later i get a order to garnesh my wages form my human resources dept for 25%. Im like are u f'in kidding me? I tried to call and work something out but i guess it was too late. Know im being garneshed over $1,000 a month and as i recall litigation through the dept of justice was a possibly. I try and talk  with them but there answers are so vauge that i think i might be going jail or somthing. Or even worse my family and i may lose our home over my stupidy. I should of just talked with them when i had chance and paid what was asked. Of course i didnt have 6k in the bankm but given that oppurtunity over again i would find some way to get it and i would have tooken the call allot more serious. Wor dof advice if they call you talk to them. If they have called you give them a call and work somthing out before its to late. Because the goverment is some sons of bi$%Hes for given a collection agency so much power. All im saying is take these people serious.

They called looking for someone and took down their number.  They work for Dept of Education who steals money from poor people and if you already paid it off and they are calling you then I suggest you take control of the call.
