This is a collection agency for hospitals and clinics mostly. This number is a number to an autodialer that places calls for the agency. It does not matter if you are listed on the National Do Not Call Registry, this is a debt collector and they do not apply to the DNC list; however, if the calls are violating certain regulations, you can file a complaint with the FTC, or Federal Trade Commission. Debt collectors, telemarketers and the like all have similar rules they have to abide by. If you are dealing with a debt collector, they CAN NOT: use deceptive practices, such as threaten you with arrest or trick you into paying for collection calls; use obscene language; Call you at work after you tell them that your boss does not approve these calls; Refuse to give its name and the name of the collection company when asked; Put a debt on your credit report if you file a dispute. It must validate the debt by obtaining a verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment from the creditor before continuing their collection efforts. The results of the investigation must be mailed to you. They can also not deny you the right to receive a written notice (within five days after your first phone conversation) that would tell you how much you owe and the name of the creditor that says you owe the money. If you do not receive the notice within five days, call the collection agency and ask for its address and fax number. Then, send a letter to the collector noting its failure to send you the required notice. As a minimum, make a note in your file Keep documentation of EVERYTHING- when they called, the times they called, who you spoke to, and what was said. If you are repeatedly being contacted by a collector looking for someone other than you, it may be considered a form of harassment. If you are repeatedly being contacted by a collector looking for you, you can ask them to quit calling during certain hours or to cease communication period on all telephone numbers associated with your account and only contact you in writing. To stop this you need to send them a letter requesting to cease calls. Many collectors will hang up on you and just keep calling if you tell them this, so before you make your "cease and assist" statement, be sure to document their name, the name of the company they work for, and tell them that you want the address of the company for correspondence. They can not decline to provide you with this information. If they do, ask for their manager. Once you get this information, tell them you want all future correspondence in writing. You need to send this request via a certified mail and request a return receipt. If you want to allow calls only during certain times, tell them about it in the letter. By law collection companies are required to respect your privacy and will have to cease all phone calls to your home, relatives, neighbors, and work. When dealing with these bottom feeders, NEVER acknowledge that you owe the debt. Always refer to the debt as "the ALLEGED DEBT". Also, when you are discussing debts with a bill collector, keep in mind that many of these companies have bought your debt for pennies on the dollar, which means that the original debtor has basically wrote off your balance as a bad debt and sold it to one of these bully companies for a mere fraction of what you owed. For instance, if you had a debt to ABC Co. for $5000.00 and XYZ and Associates are sending you letters saying you owe them for this debt, more than likely, ABC wrote this off as a bad debt and sold it to XYZ for 200.00. So now XYZ will hound you and tell you they will take you to court and all that jazz, because everything they can get you to pay over the 200.00 is PURE PROFIT. Many will offer to settle the debt for "a substancial savings", just so they can make some quick cash and be done with it. Many will even say they will remove the bad marks from your credit report if you pay them, but they are tricky. If you negotiate this with them or they offer this to you, tell them you want this IN WRITING before you proceed any furthur, or they WILL screw you. There is also a statute of limitations in many states which prohibits debt collectors from collecting on old debts after a certain period of time. Check on the statutes in your area. What helped me find out this information is reading the book, "Debt Cures They Don't Want You To Know About" by Matthew Treaudeau. I know there is a lot of controversy about his other books and I have not had the time or money to take a look at his other books yet to have firsthand knowledge of what the hub-bub is all about but this book in particular REALLY does give you the know-how to lower your interest rates, eliminate and reduce debt, and it gives a lot of information that many average people like myself would have otherwise not known. Your local library may even have this book, so you don't have to go out and pay for it, or ask your friends and family if they have a copy or knows someone who does. The retail price is somewhere around 20.00 I think, but I got my book brand new out of a closeout/price reduced book bin at my local Office Max for 4.99, and it has done me a world of good so far. It is well worth the 5.00 investment just to have the knowledge that the book gave me about credit cards and bill collectors. I hope this helps anyone who has had the same trouble with collectors as I have had, and good luck to you all.
