I got called from this number and the guy said "how are you today?"  i said "good,  who is this?"  he paused a second and said something but i hung up.  I have a phone caller app that tells me where the number is from and who is calling (doesnt always know who is calling)  the app said Jamaica.  I remember my aunt saying dont call back because you have to pay for out of country calls.

I did not accept the call as I did not recognize the number nor the "Jamaica" but this needs to be stopped.

Zabrina, this particular colony of foul smelling, woolly headed little Jamaican beasts is one of the oldest (i.e. longest running) still in operation.  What you might be surprised to learn is that over 30,000 calls are placed DAILY from Jamaica to the United States for the purpose of trying to swindle/extort money. In most cases, these foul smelling creatures have only your phone number and will try to extract additional information from you using the ruse of trying to verify your correct name/address so they can deliver the prize package.

More than a year ago, I was first contacted by these filthy, little animals, when I received a call from something calling itself "John Baker."  In any event, this "John" was calling to tell me I had won 2.5 million dollars from "Mega Millions" in Las Vegas. It instructed me to get a Green Dot Money card from CVS, load it with $499.25 to pay for my "registration fees." A few days after this call, I was shocked to see this particular scam featured on ABC World News. During that segment, they played the audio of a conversation between an elderly woman - who had already sent them $85,000 - and one of these black stained rodents.

It appears that these useless roaches have begun using much more aggressive, threatening tactics. There have been numerous reports (both here and on the local media,) of intended victims being contacted by bogus IRS agents. There have also been a few reports that they are specifically targeting spouses of our deployed servicemen!

Spread the word, these vile creatures need to be stopped. Permanently.

Received a call from (876) 401-6737
Jamaica.  A man asked me if remembered signing up for Publishers Clearinghouse.  He was very difficult to hear; lots of background noise.  I told him I've never signed up for such a thing in my whole life and that he must have the wrong number.  I disconnected the call straight away.

They called back immediately.  I did not answer.  They called back twice more within the next 15 minutes.

I feel so bad for that moron.

The Call Type should be "Scam for Profit."

They called my cell phone number (unlisted).  At first there was just garbled background noise.  I said hello twice before I heard any voice, then he acted like he hadn't heard me until I said hello a third time.  He said that he was from Publishers Clearing House, and asked whether I remembered entering their sweepstakes.  I said that I did not enter it.  He said, "Well, you've won," (in a very drab manner) and then asked if I would tell him my address, so they could come deliver my prize.  I said I would not, and hung up.

After finding this web page, I called my local police non-emergency number.  The officer assured me that these people don't have any local operatives, that they are actually located in Jamaica, and nobody was ever going to come to my house (nor rob it while I was away).  He said they try to get you to purchase a card from which they receive your large lump sum of cash, giving you nothing in return.

They also try to get your money by somehow enticing you into calling back the number which shows up on your Caller ID.  The phone number, in this case (876) 401-6737, is actually a "pay-per-call" service.  If they can get you to call the number, the scammer receives exorbitant fees which are charged to your phone line without your knowledge or permission.  This is a variant on the "One Ring Scam": Wikipedia's "Area code 876" page says that the automatic charges associated with those calls are usually a $19.95 initial fee, plus $9.00 per minute.  Since (876) 401-6737 is an international phone number (outside the United States), victims in the US have no legal recourse.  Unfortunately, it's easy not to notice the fact that you are placing an international call since calls to the Caribbean and Canada don't require the special "011" prefix that most international calls do.  The Better Business Bureau has a web page titled "Beware of Fraudulent International Phone Calls", http://www.bbb.org/us/article/beware-of-fraud ... phone-calls-466 , which includes the advice: "Know where you are calling before you dial."  Caribbean area codes include 242, 246, 264, 268, 284, 340, 345, 441, 473, 649, 664, 721, 758, 767, 784, 787, 809, 829, 849, 868, 869, 876, and 939.  Canadian area codes include 204, 250, 289, 306, 403, 416, 418, 450, 506, 514, 519, 604, 613, 647, 705, 709, 778, 780, 807, 819, 867, 902, and 905.  (Of course, the vast majority of phone numbers in these area codes are legitimate, but "pay-per-call" scammers can hide there because their phone systems don't offer consumer protections which we enjoy in the US, especially for those calling from the US.)  The BBB also advises on this page that: "A block on calls to '900' services [which are 'pay-per-call' services in the USA] will not stop calls to ... international numbers.  If you are certain you will not need to make international calls, call your long-distance carrier and ask them to put an international block on your telephone line."  The BBB also has a web page about the "One Ring Scam", http://www.bbb.org/nashville/news-events/bbb- ... ing-phone-scam/ , which includes the advice, "Notify your wireless provider and OPT OUT on all third party billing to your [cell] phone."

Just got a random call from this number. I didn't pick up because my phone said it was coming from Jamaica. Sounds like one of those scams that charge you $$$ for calling back or picking up.

I received the same call. I wish I could say I didn't fall for it. I was told to purchase a green dot pay pal card. I didn't do that but did call them back. Long story short the phone bill was charged $. 100.00 for the calls I made back. I didn't fully fall for the scam.  I consider myself a fairly intelligent person  and glad I didn't purchased the $900.00 pay pal card. If I was really smart I would not have called back. So hope this helps some one else I the future.

>>>  I can"t understand why law can"t or won"t do anything about it. <<<

They ARE doing something about it:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0119-jam ... ng-us-consumers

What some people don't understand is that it takes time to trace down the thieves and criminals who actually make these calls, as well as the cooperation of two completely separate and sovereign governments that also have other important things to do and limited budgets to pay for these things.  (Ever hear of the Sequester?)

Then, too, all it takes to commit these crimes is a disposable cell phone...

I won!! ---Not.  The guy on the phone said I won a check and a new car and take down this phone number and call his manager.  I asked what company he was with again and he said "Publishers Clearing House, you remember entering, right?"  Well, I had never entered it so I knew it was a scam, plus the fact by his voice I could tell something was wrong.  He didn't even act happy that I had won!  LOL  The number was 876-401-6737.

Just got a call from this number. Caller said his name was David Desher and asked me if I remembered signing up for PCH. I said no. He asked if I was sure because I had won. I then said, "and?" And he hung up. Sounded like he was trying to disguise his voice. So annoying.

I received a call from 876-401-6737 on my cell phone. The man on the other line asked me if I registered for PCH. I asked him if he knew my name and he asked what so I repeated at that time he hung up.  I knew it was a scam. Never provide any information over the phone regarding personal details about you.

Prank Call
I just received similar call from a Jamaica number 876-401-6737 asking if I remembered signing up for Publishers Clearing House. He said I needed to get something to write with and call the manager.  When I told him I didn't have anything to write with, he hung up.  I thought something was fishy and knew I would be reading about a scam when I googled the phone number.   If I had won Publisher's Clearing House, I don't think someone would call me to have me call someone else.  They would just show up at my door with a big huge 10 million dollar Publishers Clearing House check online with the Channel 2, 4 and 5 news vans

Received a phone call telling me I had signed up a long time ago for a publishers clearing house and asking me my address. I informed him I had signed up for no such thing and tried to sort out the situation. I was redirected to a confused sounding man asking me who I was and why I was calling him. I tried to patiently explain to him that i had been called originally and been redirected to his number. He then proceeded to curse at me and so i hung up.
