A Dozen Ways to Protect Yourself
The next time you get a "personal" letter or telephone call telling you "it?s your lucky day," the Federal Trade Commission encourages you to remember that:

1.Legitimate sweepstakes don?t require you to pay or buy something to enter or improve your chances of winning, or to pay "taxes" or "shipping and handling charges" to get your prize.

If you have to pay to receive your "prize," it?s not a prize at all.

A guy named Bill Dixon, Las Vegas, NV, keeps calling my elderly mother stating that she won $2.5K plus a 2012 Mercedes vehicle. But to get it she has to send him $500 on a debit card and a copy of her license.  My poor mother needs the money, so she really thinks this is legit.  He is not even in Las Vegas. We all told her its a SCAM, so at least she didn't send him any money.  These people should be charged with a felony crime for this.

Prank Call
My boyfriend received a call last week, from percy stating he had won 7.5 million dollars and a mercedes benz. He went along with Percy and asked him more and more difficult questions. He said he needed insurance delivery money to get the car. He told Percy it was a scam and hung up with him. Three days later we received another call from Percy, asking him to reconsider his position. We told him we were calling our lawyer and calling National Sweepstakes. We did call National Sweepstakes and they told us they were never charge anyone, and the only phone call we would receive would be to tell us that something would be arriving in the mail. I hope no one falls for this scam. These people are persistent.

Number who called us was 876-421-5220

The alleged (you notice I term them alleged) Do Not Call Registry's get you one thing and one thing only:  More annoying phone calls and that's it! Plain and simple.  They work for the "bad guys" advantage only.  I no longer bother.

As I previously stated in earlier posts, I don't answer my phone unless I recognize the phone number.  They can leave a message if it's a friend or family member with a new phone number.  It's that simple.  Makes my stress level much more manageable that way.

I gotta tell ya, Granny, I hope you don't get a horrendous phone bills as those calls are very expensive I've heard. :(

Me too, today around 11:52 AM PST.  Silly girl, doesn't she realize we're smarter than that?!

I apologize to anyone and everyone earlier for my all caps a couple of times in other replies I made today.  I was stressing my point, not yelling.  From now on I'll use proper computer etiquette despite no bolding feature.

The phone number this woman called from was 954-376-7882, however, I was directed on the voicemail to phone the following number 876-421-5220 for further information and instructions.  I have not phoned this number as I don't play well with these types of people (SCAMMERS).  I didn't recognize it to be a Jamaican phone number, nor did I notice an accent when listening to the message, but I just don't participate or fall for this type of thing to begin with as I'm an intelligent aware woman.

I highly doubt that.  If anyone has "WON" anything it is free!  Hence the word "WIN" there.  I don't believe you for one second.  You are more than likely one of those scammers trying to look and seem legit. Sorry ... not buying it. :(  Nice try though.

You have to have a specific phone number to have your phone company block - you can't just block all phone calls from a specific area code.  It doesn't work that way.  Best thing to do is ignore them.  Hit your mute button or whatever so you don't hear the ringing phone when you look at your caller ID and it's from one of these area codes.  Best thing to do is call screen!  Hence the nifty little feature of caller ID.

As far as the FBI, DA and local Police Dep't., I'm sorry to say they have "better things to do" other than follow these scams, unless you fall victim to them by participating and actually sending them money or giving them your personal information.  They are unable to find all of them let alone half of these scammers.  Just like with SPAM in your inbox, be diligent and cautious.  Be aware people.

The phone numbers on my caller ID I don't recognize I don't answer.  It's that simple. I figure it this way, if someone wants to speak to me badly enough they will leave a message for me on my voicemail.  This woman did and it was funny as she referred to me by a different name (my mother-in-law) yet calling on my phone number.  I haven't phoned them back and I won't.  I don't play nicely with these people.  I simply forward the information I've received onto the proper authorities if I deem that to be a prudent and proper thing to do. Mostly I ignore them entirely.  They are not worth my time and/or energy to invest anything further in it other than listening to the shpiel on my voicemail.

If you are a person that just can't stand a ringing phone, then just simply pick it up and hang up immediately after 2 or 3 rings. They still call but it does seem to deter the calls somewhat.

There are simply too many scams out there for the authorities to even keep track of half of them.  The main thing to do is protect yourself by not playing in the first place. If it sounds too good to be true then it IS people!  Plain and simple.

Prank Call
I, too, received a call from someone calling himself Percy Dankers of Orlando Florida, stating that I had won 2.5 million dollars plus a 2011 white Mercedes c-class from National Sweepstakes, and all I had to do to claim my prize was to have a check for $379.00 to cover the cost of Insurance for delivery from The International Courier Service, Oakland, Ca.delivery fee. I knew this was strange because the State of Florida is thousands of miles away from the State of California!!! Who uses a Courier Service so far away?
Anyway, instinctively I knew that this was a scam, but led them to believe that I was going along with it...
Sorry, Percy, the joke's on YOU and your team of SCAMMERS!!!   ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

at 12:48pm a message was left that I won 2 million dollars and a mercedies. the phone numbe I was to call back was 1876-427-5220.  I did call mack and left a message.  I want to tell her that the jig is up and  I will not send money to her.  They can take it out of my winnings and report it to the IRS so tax can be with held.  If not stop calling.  I do not think the "do not call" system works.  what do you think.
this is a good idea so old people do not get scammed, but not all over 70 yrs old are on the net. the TV Should make announcements.  granny

Caller left message claiming that I had won money from the World Wide Sweepstakes.  I was entered in some Australian National Lottery and Sweepstakes and won 10.5 million dollars.  I'm thinking this is another one of those scams that were going around in email form, so if you get a call from this number, be fore warned that this is not real, you will be required to pay to supposedly receive!

Telemarketer
Got a call that was a "Restricted Number". We did a call trace and the number was 954 376-7882.
I called the number back and a Michelle Smith answered.
I asked her why she was calling using a "restricted number" and she said that I would not be able to determine the real number that was restricted...guess again beyach!
BTW, 954 area code is in Ft Lauder Dale, FL

Michelle claimed that the company is called National Sweepstakes (at least for this week).
The recorded message earlier said I had won $2.5 million in the Australian lottery...what a joke.
Hey Michelle, find a real job.

Prank Call
Received a call from "Unknown Caller". I never answer calls from unidentified callers. Left a message on my answering machine. Person identified herself as "Michelle Smith" of "WorldWide Sweepstakes". Claimed I won $2.5 million in the Australian Lottery.

I did not enter any such lottery. Area code 876 is Jamaica.

100% guaranteed that this is a scam. Similar type fraud schemes originating from Jamaica have been going on for quite some time.

DO NOT call them back.
DO NOT send them money
DO NOT give them any private information like SSN, bank account or credit account numbers.

I used "Prank Call" for call type as there is no "Fraud" category

I received a call from "MIchelle Smith", saying I won 5 million from "WorldWide Sweepstakes" from the "Australian National Lottery". I tried to look it up on google and nothing, intstead I found these warnings. She hasn't yet asked for money, but when I called I was told on the phone that " the number could not be reached as dialed and that I had to dial 009". If this was legit they would have a toll free number. I believe you get charged when you dial 009! So if people call back to inquire they are making money even if no one gives them the money they ask for. SCAM! Oh, and here's another clue to look for; she asked for me by my maiden name and I've been married for almost 4 yrs!

The FTC is onto this (2009):
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt148.shtm

Go here to file a complaint.  You will be able to enter the caller's "name" and the phone number from which he/she called, and some details about how much money he/she asked for.
Your reporting helps the government track these scammers.
https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

Also, I asked for them to remove my name and number from their list, and the caller stated that "Worldwide Sweepstakes" would comply with my request.

First I had a lady with a strong accent call me up and tell me I won a package through some National Worlwide Sweepstakes, and then she gave me a number to call. I figured it was a scam since she couldn't answer any of the questions that I attempted to ask. I then had a guy with a strong accent leave a message saying I won some package, and that I need to call the given number back to recieve it. I never called him back after doing some research for the company online. I recieved yet a THIRD phone call from a lady who informed me I won 2.5 million dollars through some National worldwide Sweepstakes. I asked her how I won this prize...why I never received any documentation...etc. She iformed me that they don't do mailings because of blah blah blah, and that she could fax me the documentation. She also said I would be responsible for $550 for insurance purposes for the delivery of my large check. She told me her name was "Michelle Smith" and said to give her a call back at this number. Being a skeptic...I punched in the number she gave me, and low and behold many others have experienced the same thing. How naive do they think I am anyway? What these people do is just plain WRONG on so many levels!
