Someone from this number called but didn't leave a message on my machine. The fact that it's a Jamaican area code tells me all that I need to know: It's a scam caller. Would never trust any caller from that area code. Just google the '876 area code' and there will be dozens of articles referring to scammers and to avoid contact with the caller.

Prank Call
Received a call from 876-581-3456 today, 12/02/13.  My response was that Microsoft has my alternate e-mail address and requested that they send a detailed explanation of the problem and the steps necessary to remedy it; my regular computer guru would then take care of it. Never finished my request -- caller disconnected in a huff.

Swell, now the Jamaicans are doing the computer-tech scam.  I guess they're getting diminishing returns from the PCH scam.

Anyone cold calling you is a scam! There is no way they can tell anything. Do not give them access to your computer!

Pure male cow bowel matter Shill! This cold calling folks about their computers is nothing but a scam! 100% scam! No one should be touching anyone's computers this way and you certainly do not get "messages" from folks computers. If you find a open port, its because your hacking into someones system anyway..  But then, lol! I guess you'd be able to tell them their IP also at that point which none of the posts I've read ever said they could tell them that.

So yeah, show me.. oh, thats right you can't prove any of it Shill.. Busted!

Now stick this in your pipe and smoke it!

"Pretty sure" is not 100 percent sure. Had you not considered that the gentleman caller became aware of the problem with your Windows computer because you left an open port and he was graciously trying to alert you as a favor? If someone thinks they know more than me I have two words for you: "Show me". If I learn something new, I am stronger, more valuable and further educated.

In all modesty, this does not happen often given my vast knowledge and life experiences. Give people the benefit of the doubt. They may just be sincerely trying to help. Who knows, you may win the Jamaican or Nigerian lottery*.

My neighbor said after she replaced her computer and change all her banking information the scammers started calling again.  And it wasn't the same scammers all the time.  The original group sounded like they were from India or Pakistan. After kicking them out she got calls with accents from India/Pakistan.  And she got calls with Hispanic accents and with eastern European accents.  They were calling from (or spoofing) several different numbers.  Apparently there are multiple groups pulling the same scam.

We're in area code 402.

*WARNING TO ALL*
Male scamer posing as Microsoft tech is calling from 876-581-3456. He provides bogus call back number. Hangs up when you ask, "So what is my computer MAC address?" No one answers when you call this number but the recorded voice sounds like that of possibly a woman from the Caribbean. Wiskey Tango Foxtrot over

not Michael,  As I have mentioned in many of my posts, how these woolly headed beasts came to initially call us, is still, to a great extent, unknown. I do know that one particular colony of these rodents is using an automatic dialer (aka robo-caller.) If anyone at the number called picks up, then that number is redialed later by a live rodent. Clearly though, if they know some of our personal information, then they cannot simply be dialing numbers at random.  They must be working off a lead list and, quite frankly, are potentially more dangerous. I do suspect there is a connection to the technical support call centers located in India (this is based on a technique I employ whenever I am asked to provide any personal information.)

Another poster (if I could recall who, I would give him appropriate credit,) posited that these chiggers work a particular area code at a time. Since the success of this scam, to a large part, depends on secrecy (think about all the intended victims who were told they should not tell anyone about their "good fortune,") saturating a particular region/area code does make tactical sense.

By including our area codes (and mine, by the way, is 619,) we can validate this theory AND, more importantly, we can bring greater resources to bear in that particular region of our country.  Thank you for your help.

My neighbor fell for it.  I found out about a month later when she was telling me how much faster her computer was running.  I told her about the scam.  She and her husband spent the next day closing their bank accounts and opening new ones.

She took her tower to a local computer repair place.  It turned out the scammer had turned-off her anti-malware program.  The never did find anything else wrong with it.  I suspect the scammer was reading her banking transactions during the day, collecting bank account numbers and passwords and performing DOS attacks at night.

Have received calles from this party before.  They claim to be Microsoft technicians who have found a problem with your computer and it is causing server problems.  They are a scam, as I called Microsoft Technical support and they have no one making such calls.
