This is a version of the automatic debit scam as described by the FTC here http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/telemarketing/tel06.shtm  It's frequently mysterious as to how they got your account info in the first place. They might be fraudulently charging accounts at random, or you might have provided your account for a free something like $-off coupon or a shopping card (just pay for shipping), or provided your account when you applied for a payday loan, and buried in the fine print is authorization to auto-charge your account every month with 3rd-party, perhaps difficult-to-cancel subscriptions. The methods used to get you to "agree" to the fine print is endless and they come up with new schemes every day.
By law, all 3rd-party phone billers have to include phone numbers with their charges. If you don't see a number on your bill, call your phone company, tell them you need the biller's number and they should be able to retrieve the number for you from their records. To stop the billing, call the biller to kill the subscription and get your money back and if that fails, tell your card issuer or bank that fraud has occurred and have them refund the money and replace the account - this is important, the account must be replaced because criminals have it and they can charge again or sell account info to other criminals. Report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.

I recevied a letter in the mail thanking me for my 4 magazine subscriptions...I was to mail in a payment for $49.90 for the next 21 months...Thing is, I NEVER signed up for a magazine, so I never sent in payment.  I have began to receive calls from "American Publishing" telling me they need to receive payment for the magazines or will take further credit action.  They have called me at least 5 times a day.  They claim to have me on tape agreeing to payment----have any of you experienced this? what actions should I take?

I also had the same problem happen to me today. I checked my bank account, and noticed that there was a $39.90 charge from this magazine. I immediately called my bank to stop the payment request, in which I would have to wait for the debit to post. I gave the magazine company a call, and talked to one of the supervisor's, and told them the situation, which is in the process of being taken care of. If you have any questions on how to take care of this, please feel free to contact me via e-mail musikakademy@aol.com

Jnell, this just happened to me as well.  I'm currently freaking out and really worried.  I cancelled my card so they can't take any more money and changed my phone number, but I'm still really worried about the collection agency thing.  They have my address and name and stuff.  And people in past posts are saying that even though the scammers said they had a recording, they really didn't, but I'm afraid that they actually do record them now since so many people in the past demanded to hear their recording.

Hi, I stupidly fell for this scam today and the second more money than I agreed to was taken out of my account, I looked up the phone number and realized it was a scam.  I've already cancelled my card, switched bank accounts and changed my phone number.  I was just wondering if they ever reported you to a collection agency or if it ever affected your credit report?  I can't stop stressing out about it, but I don't know what else to do.

I got a call in July that I won a $1,000 shopping spree thru my bank card.  I went along with it.  They knew part of my card number which I thought was weird, but being from my bank I thought it was legit.  They said I had to buy magazines.  I told them I'm not paying for anything.  They reassured me that nothing will be taken out of my account and I won't be charged for anything.  Well the next day there was a charge for $19.90 to them.  I called the bank and had to Hot card my debit card due to fraud.  Now I am getting statements in the mail for $59.70.  I called them and said I didn't want this.  They said they have me on a voice recording saying I ordered it.  BULLSH** I did.  They said they have to collect.  They were willing to do a settlement offer..Screw that they are not getting a thing.  Now they are threatening me to turn me into collections.  Can they do that??  They don't have my social.    Can they do that?/  What do I do?

They make you pay for magazines even if someone stole your identity and used your info. Very poor company and all the customer service associates are very ignorant. They send you useless things in the mail and no matter what they force you to pay the price. Even if you just went to cancle they charge you 70% of the full price which comes out to be about $371.00.

I was initially contacted two days ago and told I won a $1000 shopping spree I did not have to pay for anything but the shipping and handling charges for items I would purchase online.  They also mentioned me having good history with my magazine company, and wanted me to re-subscribe to them. In my head it made sense, since I have had my magazine subscription for over 4 years and its about time to renew.  I thought it was a little bit shady that theyd be calling me, but they had ALL of my information (i.e. NEW address, card number, telephone number, etc).  I was an idiot, as soon as I hung up the phone I looked at my bank account and was charged 49.50 and 4.95 for a special benefit program.  After they told me over and over again I would not be charged, I called them back today and they said I verbally agreed to their program (they have the recording bc I at the time thought it to be true).  I told them I wanted to cancel, they then told me I would have to pay a cancellation fee of over 300 dollars.  The first representative I talked to was able to "negotiate" the price down to 182 dollars.  I told her I needed proper documentation mailed to me reguarding the information she had just told me. I hung up the phone and called back getting a different representative (the guy that initally called me) and told him my situation and that I wanted to cancel, he was able to talk the 300 dollars down to 200, I asked why the other lady said 182 and he was incredibly confused.  Said he had to crunch some numbers, bc they are all about "good customer service".  I also told him I wanted proper documentation saying once the 182 was paid my name would be cleared from their services, I could hear him turn around in his chair and talk to the other representative I had spoken to.  I just called my bank and reported fraud, they are investigating the situation, my card was deavtivated.  We shall see if they call for future payment/to threaten sending me to a collection agency.  Word of advice, when it sounds shady it probably is.

They called me from: 4235867958
I returned their call a: 8772621117 and 8775110911 (the Benefits program)
