Van Ru Credit - they buy bad debt and try to collect. They also seem to fish for debtors by calling people with a similar name in the phone directory. The 877-278-0017 number appears to be fake - a real number for Van Ru is 877-784-0497; address:

This company has made numerous calls to my cell at all times of the day. Most of the time there's no message. One time they did leave a voice mail identifying themselves as VanRu Credit Corp. Another time, they will even send text messages with a message like "I'm at the movie theater" or "I'm at the mall" - obviously an attempt to get a reply. If you do answer the call, there is usually a lady's voice (or a young man's voice if you are a female) who immediately says your name as if she (he) knows you, hoping you'll say something stupid like "yeah, who's this?" or something else to make it clear you're the person they are looking for. How lame.
According to what I have learned from other people who have also received calls from them, it seems they work for Discover Card exclusively. I haven't confirmed this last part, but I believe they may also be junk debt buyers, however, Discover (just like Capital One) doesn't usually sell their bad debts until much later on, especially the larger ones.
