Got 2 voicemails, 1 addressed to me and the guys listed his name as Dane Archelli and the 2nd one was the EXACT SAME GUY and gave him name as Kenneth (can't remember the last name) and he accidently called my number but requesting someone else to call back and he even disclosed the last 4 of the persons social in the voicemail.

No legit company will EVER disclose social security number to someone who their attempting to collect from. Additionally, within minutes he changed his name from Dane to Kenneth...

This is FRAUD

A newspaper I freelance for received a call from this number today (6/17/13). The caller ID said, 'State of Meriden'. Meriden is a city in Connecticut. That in itself was odd. The woman knew my name and knew that I was a freelancer writer for the newspaper and asked if I was there. My editor replied that freelancers do not work on site and asked why she was calling. the woman said that she was calling because I had "submitted a letter to the county". My editor asked her which county, the woman would not give her any more information, just a phone number and a reference number, which she then sent to me. I called the number and the woman answering said, "CAR". I guess that's the company name? The woman then began asking me inappropriate questions about family members. I asked what the company was all about and what their address was. She said she wasn't allowed to give out that information. I hung up. Then called them back a few minutes later. The person answering identified herself as Lisa White. I told her why I was calling and said that if I didn't like the answers I was going to call the state police. I asked her several questions about the company. She wouldn't answer me. I asked what their address was. She replied, "Why do you need to know?" Then she said they were out of New York. I asked New York City or state? She said city. I again asked for her address. She hung up the phone.

OK, here's the deal - it's someone attempting to scare you into paying for a debt that has already been paid, is  totally bogus, or outwith the statute of limitations to collect.  If you HAD had a returned check - that does not mean you committed fraud, so no, you would not be arrested.  Financial institutions send out NSF - returned item notices if a check bounces, and usually within 5 - 7 days, so don't you think you would have gotten a notice from your own bank in 2009?  They don't wait for years to let you know!

I would put a stop to any payment you said you'd give to the callers.  Call your bank and check with them, after all, they should be able to tell you if you had a returned check.  Also report the call to the FTC and your state's Attorney General.  Unless you're going out and deliberately writing checks and there's no money in the bank to cover them, you are NOT committing fraud and you are NOT going to be arrested.  Oh, and cops do not give a heads up when they're going to arrest someone.  Read about the FDCPA and learn your rights as a consumer.

I received a call from Bill Brooks, he said he is an attorney and is calling to peruse criminal or civil actions against both me and my wife. He left this on my voice mail (pure fdcpa violation : disclosed personal information and  was not sure who's voicemail it was since our names are not present).

He also called and left a message saying he was calling from the law firm of CAR & Associates. (again they are not a law firm), just an old school collector trying to hit commissions by using scare tactics. Kind of silly when I think about this, I am a commercial / consumer collector and have been doing this for over 15 years. People I traced the company down and below are the phone numbers and address...

Got a message on my answering machine yesterday. They stated my name and said they were from the Alameda County Legal Services. Said they were calling in reference to case # 402032 in regards to a criminal case. They were looking for Fletcher Rouse Sr. I have no idea who this is. Anyways, I played the message over and over again trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Called my sister, she told me to google the number she said it's probably a scam. Sure enough there were pages and pages of complaints about this number. Don't fall for it peeps and spread the word. 877-286-9269 is the number. People have been scammed outta their hard earned money.

I just got a message from this same Company - CAR & Associates stating that My Ex-husband who haven't talked to in 10 yrs was using my SS# and that I needed to call them and tell them my side of the story. They indicated that this was in regards to a scheduled summons.  In all the years that I have done Legal Collections on Debts we never called to warn someone. We called to ask for money sure, but if we had decided to move forward with legal action we would send out a constable to serve them. If this were a criminal matter they would send out a detective to interview me.
I'll probably call them back to listen to their story, and come up with an even crazier story to tell them. :0)
After reviewing everyone else story sounds like a total scam. Probably someone fishing for personal information to do a little identity theft or wire fraud.

This is the 3rd call from 864-332-4609 saying they are from Aiken County Legal Services and are going to serve me with a felony and arrest me if I don't pay them.  I told them again to stop calling me and to come serve me the papers.  We have no outstanding bad checks that need to be paid.  The company is CAR and associates- dont fall for it- they are really convincing if you didn't know any better.

Called from 973-757-1809 and we were told to call 877-286-9269 about a returned item.  Threatened with arrest within a short period of time if we did not call.  We have no credit problems and police told us to ignore calls.  This has been going on over a year from various numbers with different 800 numbers to call.

I received a call from 877-286-9269 and from 864-332-4609 saying they were CAR and Associates and that I owed money for a bad check from 2010 which is not legit.  They even said they were serving me a warrant and arresting me if I didn't wire money to their acct.  Also, they contacted friends and family and said they were on the account and responsible for the debt too which is not true.  I have called my local sheriff's office and also Bank of America (where he told me to wire the # and gave me his acct #) so they can look into the matter.

@RL......
since you are getting the same calls it's evident to me that your in the right place just on the wrong side of the bars (of soap). Maybe you should call them and see if in fact this is something you are responsible for. As a member of law enforcement one should be able to assume that you are a stand up person. So instead of venting your frustration here, go ahead and call them back and take care of your responsibility.

They called me about a stop payment on a check for damages done to my vehicle in 2008. I told them we can settle this in court and I have the documents and pictures where the body shop damaged my vehicle because they didn't protect the car while sanding it, causing particles to chip my entire front hood.

I received voice mail messages on both my home and work phones from 267-801-0889,  Although it sounds like the same person left both messages, on the message left on my work phone, the caller identified himself as Scott Matthews, while, on the message left on my home phone, the caller identified himself as Eugene Tunney from Legal Services.  In both messages, the caller recommended that I immediately call his client, whom he did not identify, because the client had reason to believe that my social security number and identification had been used to commit a fraudulent bank transaction.  On the message left on my home phone, the caller also made a threat with regard to my occupation if I did not call his client.

I have received a few calls like this, also from Eugene.  Saying that I'm involved in some kind of a scam.  He has called my ex-husband, my Human Resources department, my elderly parents (ages 84 & 78) and myself.  He states that he is from "The County" and that he's going to serve me, my parents and a sister to whom I have little communication with.  I have had my identity stolen in the past and have asked for proof of the debt.  I take care of my bills as best as I can after my divorce.  I have told this place that if they can prove to me that this is in fact my debt, which I do not believe that it is, that I will be certain to make arrangements to pay the balance due.  I have asked also for an address to remit payment, but I am told that they must directly withdraw  it from my bank account, asking for debit card information.  This sounds way to far fetched to be legitimate.  They have also threatened me with jail, future embarrassment at my place of employment, etc.  It seems to me that they have gotten my information from on-line somehow or from when my identity was stolen awhile ago.  The call is received from (757) 419-5160 and I am told to call (877) 286-9269.

Recieved a phone call about an old Payday Loan.  They prey on the uninformed. You cannot go to jail for not paying a bill. Payday loans are short term loans with a check held as a form of security.  I kindly informed the man on the line of that information and he got rude on told me that he hoped I enjoyed going to jail.  1.  A reputable bill collector will never ever tell you you are going to jail iof you don pay a debt it is against the law.  2.  If you have outstanding debts and someone calls you get the information and call the company and see if that is the collection agency they are using to collect the debt you owe.  3. this is a common scam being used at this time and the payday lenders are well aware of it and want the information. 4. DO NOT PAY THESE PEOPLE A DIME. IT IS A SCAM AND THE MONEY YOU PAY THEM WILL NOT GO TOWARDS THE DEBT. Get as much information as possible and report them to your state att. and the federal trade commission.

You Sir are a complete idiot and for that matter what is referred to as a PROFESSIONAL DEBTOR. I would like to first educate you just slightly on the matter of debt collection... no they are not allowed to use scare tactics but in fact they CAN take you to court and legally depending on where you reside obtain a judgement against you for up to 3 times the amount you actually owe plus any court costs and attorney fees. For you to sit here and give people ADVICE is absolutely absurd. If you so chose to be a deadbeat and not take care of your financial obligations that is one thing but to encourage other people is hard to fathom. I am in no way siding with a collection agency but you should inform the people whom your are giving advice to do what they can to actually try to resolve the credit issues they have instead of ignoring them. People.... the bills don't go away, my advice would be to contact the creditor to see if you can obtain some form of a settlement to lower the amount you owe and enter into a payment arrangement.

Mr. Goldstein called my boss at work. She freaked out because of her not knowing of things like this happening because she is financially able to pay bills (therefore hasn't received creditor calls). Me, I'm used to the scare tactic so knew right away what was going on.  They say anything and everything to scare you into thinking you are going to jail or catching a case and that is what is illegal, not paying a bill is not illegal, its just a bad choice. DONT BE SCARED OF CREDITORS for not paying a bill, all they can do is put it on your credit report, which it should already be there. Just laugh and make it fun, it pisses them off that they cant bully you.
