Debt Collector
I had someone call me from a private number claiming to be a processor from the state of Alabama. He said he was trying to serve me with papers and kept mentioning a background check with my information. I finally hung up after getting frustrated and remembering that I was at work. He called right back twice lwaving a message stating that he ddnt kno why I hung up but that I was to call the firm Coin Trace Services and speak with them because everything he had was sealed. I called and the guy was calling me by my ex husbands last name stating that I would have a failure to appear in court and saying I signed my phone number to a contract with a Bham, AL addy. I left Bham in 2011 and got this phone in Oct 2012, so there was no way. They kept saying background check and background investigation and it finally hit me when I got off the phone. I just did a background check for Walmart for pre employment. I had to tell personnel the whole story and ensure the security of the check. So when u r ding anything of the sorts, be sure u ask ur employer or whoever how secure it is. These people are thirsty and will intercept your information.

Debt Collector
I also received a phone call from Coyne Services (spelling?) and they told me that I was going to be served with papers to be arrested.  I do possibly have an outstanding debt from a payday loan but currently unemployed.  This is the FIRST time I have been contacted by any company.  I am not sure if it is a SCAM or not but would really appreciate any insight on what to do next.  Has anyone actually been served with papers?  I cant pay something that I do not have.  And I can promise them if I have to go to court or face charges against me that I will not be paying a dime. They also called my former employer and this is a problem because I am currently in arbitration suit with my former employer to get my job back.,  I researched the topic on whether they are allowed to contact my employer and they are, but they are not allowed to state that they are a debt collector calling about a debt.  I am worried that this could come up in arbitration as another strike against my case.  If anyone out there that has had similar things happen to them from this company, I would sure appreciate any help or advice you could give me.  Also I have an old email from high school that is atrizzle102003@yahoo.com that someone with this problem could email me advice or instructions of what to do next, it would be greatly appreciated.

Debt Collector
I just spoke to this company after they called my place of business which is in another state than I work in.  They were pleasant but not very bright.  They said I owed for a payday loan from a place I had never heard of.  They told me if I did not pay them 700.00 right then, they were sending a process server to my house.  I told them that since they refused to send or even fax me something that showed I owed this, I would not give my credit card info over the phone.  Corey told me they were sending the process server over to my house if I did not pay them right now.  I advised they should send the process server.  She then told me that if they did that, I would have to pay 4500.00 instead.  I told them to send the process server.  Next, a phone call to my husband's cell from "Mike Watson the process server" who has no return call number except 877-318-0959 which is right back to this company.  They act very professional on the phone but refuse to provide any evidence of a debt!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

I received a call from a guy claiming to be a State of Oregon process server and was coming to my work in 40 minutes to serve me with criminal charges for fraud from a payday loan unless I immediately contacted 877-290-9014 and discussed the issue. Contacted the number (keep in mind I was quite upset and not thinking very clearly). Ended up giving this guy my debit card number to pay this bill (that I'm  not sure I really even owe) so that I wouldn't be arrested. Well after a few hours, and calming down...I did some research on the net.  When I googled Coin Trace Services I came up with absolutely ZERO information.   I googled the company this guy said I owed money too - Access Processing - again came up with ZERO information.
I called this Coin Trace Services company back and spoke with "Brian." I explained my concern of trying to identify this as a legitimate company. He stated that it was. I asked for mailing address and website. He stated that they don't operate on the Internet, and that they don't give out their mailing address as they have received death threats. I continued to express my concern about this identity of this company, he became agitated and told me that it was a legit company and they had bought my debt and they even had the IP address of the computer I used to apply for this loan. Told me to go to IP Chicken.com and trace the IP address he gave me.  By this time he had taken the money from my account.
I continued to search for information - becoming increasingly concerned that I had just been scammed again.  I called the FTC Consumer hotline, they referred me back to the Oregon Dept Of Justice because it was dealing with a payday loan.
This morning I called the OR DOJ Consumer Advoc. Office and was told that yes, this indeed sounded like a complete scam - contact my bank, ask to have charges reversed - cancel the account and that I was not going to be arrested for anything. Suggested that I never give info like that again, and ask for everything to be sent through the mail in writing - not email. (which this guy, Brian w/CTS told me he would send me email confirmations - never received them.)
Went to the bank...canceled everything and now going through the fraud process there. Also filing a formal complaint with the AG's office regarding this company.
In the meantime, my insurance is angry because they can't process my homeowner payment!
OMG People - be so careful. So many people out there looking to take advantage of everyone. It's so sad!

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
