Good point, what IS the FTC doing about this bogus practice of up charging the renewal rate? You agree to one rate, then get charged automatically or something you did not authorize. It should be illegal.

This happened to me also, I called the number on my credit statement and asked to cancel, even though I never resubscribed in the first place. They said they would credit my account, they did, but not the full amount. Called again and actually spoke with someone, he said I was being charged for the magazines already sent, which I never received. Biggest problem is that the billing dept. is separate from publisher. Big scam, I will not get this magazine again, and there should be a law about this so called business practice.

They charged my credit card for $2 for a magazine I wanted cancelled. To prevent further charges my credit card is disputing this charge and is ordering a completely new card. This may or may not work as these scammers now have authorization to use my credit card whether new or old.

These people are: https://www.magcustomerservice.com

But the credit card company says that disputing charges helps.

I of course called them to cancel as well.

STAY AWAY FROM THEM.

I would like to warn readers that on another website Books A Million (BAM) is also offering free magazines when you check out. If you agree to the offer your credit card or debit card account information is automatically sent to TWX.  If you do not cancel the subscription your card is automatically charged when the free period expires.

$58.50 was withdrawn from my checking account without my consent to TWX and a phone number of 877-312-1121.  After reading the other complaints, I realized that the magazine subscription service got my debit card account information when I purchased a book from Hastings Book store and they offered me a "free trial subscription to any magazine."  I said I would be willing to try People Magazine.  However, I never signed anything authorizing withdrawal of an undisclosed amount of money and I don't see how it is legal for Hastings to pass on this information.  I called my bank and they said the reason you can't stop withdrawals from this company is that TWX sets it up as a bill pay on their end and it is a recurring charge.  The bank can't block or stop the withdrawal and if you open a new account TWX can still get access to your money.  So the bank told me to call TWX and tell them to cancell the subscription and automatic bill pay.  I called the number and I didn't waste my time going through the automated system. Just keep hitting zero until you get a live person.  They will pull up your account and you tell them you are cancelling all subscriptions, you want a refund of the money they withdrew, and get a confirmation number from them.  TWX representative said I would have the money back in my account in 24 to 48 hours.  What is upsetting is that if you did not count on that money being pulled out of your account, it could cause you to have an overdraft charge!  The other issue is that I did not agree on the price they charged through their service and I probably could have gotten the magazine cheaper ordering directly from the subscription deals they offer directly from the magazine.  Buyer beware!  Free is not free.  I will never agree to any gimmick like this again. Good luck to all that had the same thing happen to them.

If you use your SkyMiles to receive a *FREE* Subscription, you should receive the free subscription. If you opt to receive an extra 12 months or 12 issues or 24 issues etc for *only* $2. and give your credit card info, this is where you must be diligent to CANCEL the account. If you do not pay $2. to extend your subscription then the *FREE* subscription should run out it duration and not automatically renew. I have called the number 877-312-1121 and pressed "0" and spoke to a nice lady that explained all of this to me.  I will be receiving a refund of the $39.00 that was charged and the subscription will cease. I was concerned because my husband thought he was doing a good thing for me by ordering quite a few *FREE* Magazine subscriptions for me which I did enjoy...only just beware of that $2. fee.

I had a charge for 36.00 and I never even ordered the magazine. I called my bank but they can't do anything until it posts. Once it posts they gave me a claims number where you can report them as a fraudulent charge. This is rediculous and I can't believe it has happened to so many other people. I'm calling the BBB and reporting them.

I knew what this charge was for. I purchased something online and received a 1-year magazine subscription for $2.00. Unfortunately it is automatic renewal at $19.95. However, when I called there was an automated step by step process for cancelling. It asks you if you'd like to keep your subscription after refund for only $2.00 for the rest of the year (again with auto-renewal) Then if you say no it asks if you would also like a free gift (Stainless steel travel mug, $20 gas card, or 120 minute phone card) again once saying no then it will finally cancel your account, with refund of charges and a confirmation number. I wasn't satisfied and wanted to confirm with a live human. Went through the prompts to speak to someone and a pleasant lady from their call center confirmed that it was cancelled and pending refund processing. We'll see if my card gets refunded but it seems legit that it will.

Got a charge.  Called my credit card company to dispute.  They called TWX and put me on the line to deal with TWX.

TWX tried to get me to sign up for more issues at a bonus rate! No way.  They trotted out that they would send me free issues, I would pay nothing, as long as I cancelled by X date.  No F*& way!  They said they would refund amount LESS an amount for issues already received.  I told them that I wanted the full amount refunded.  They agreed.  We will see.

Note that the charge appeared on a credit card I did not even have when I got the subscription with miles and I never gave the magazine company my credit card info. I do not think I even received all the issues the miles should have gotten me.

Internet information shows that TWX Magazine is Synapse Group Inc., a child company of Time Warner.  They refunded part of the unauthorized charge.  They said one issue had been printed and would be mailed.  It never reached me.

They automatically renewed my magazine subscription and charged $28 to my credit card.  When I called, the automated system offered a price of around $13.  I declined.  I consider the practice with the unauthorized charge a ripoff.   This subscription is through AA Frequent Flyer Program and I didn't use credit card for the original subscription.  However, they used my credit card information from my another subscription.

I used to have a long list of credit card charges and didn't catch another charge a few month ago.  I don't know how much they charged me.  But I cancelled that one too and hope they really give me at least credit for partial refund.

Received my credit card statement today and saw that  I had been charged over $86.00 in magazines that I did not order.  Intend to call my credit card company on Monday to see if they can help.  Also will call the number listed on my statement to see if they will drop the  phony charges and report all info to FTC. Was wondering how can they keep doing these iILLEGAL actions without getting into trouble.  Is the FTC doing their job??  With all the ripoffs they are pulling, it would seem like they should be locked up in jail.  Has anyone gotten any of these phone charges dropped?  I intend to keep on  trying to get this rip off company put out of business.  Intend to write state officials locally as well as New York state officials as this seems to be where they are based.

Just found out my account was charged $29 for a renewal for Popular Science.. I NEVER renew, just order it new for my son each year because it's way cheaper than the "special customer" discount.. don't think I've ever paid overf $12 for a subscription, so needless to say, I'm HOT over this... called the number and **think** I got it cancelled... I hate those automated things.. also have the bank working on it...

I check my bank account just about daily and found an unauthorized withdrawal from this company. I called them and the representative was very polite and explained to me this and another subscription I'd ordered through Amazon.com were up for renewal this month. This company processes most of Amazon's magazine subscriptions and unless you indicate not to automatically renew the magazine that's what they do.
She cancelled both subscriptions and said my money will be refunded within 72 BUSINESS hours. I'll let everyone know what happens!

While balancing my checking account I noticed a debit charged to my account that I was certain I didn't make. A phone number was displayed and I googled it on my computer to find that this had happened to many other people. It was a magazine company from whom I had previously subscribed to and they automatically, without my permission charged my account for a renewal. I had no intention of renewing. Here is the crazy part. My original subscription was only 14.95 for a year. They renewed it for 35.00 for the year. How can they just charge your account without permission?! I called the number and couldn't speak to a person, only an automated recording. I was eventually able to cancel the subscription, but it took some time. It said that my money would be refunded within 1 - 2 business days and gave me a reference number. I hope they are true to their word. Rediculous!!

When my hubby was shopping at Bealls they suckered him into signing up for those "free" magazine subscriptions so he signed up for 3 of them & now, 6 months later he is getting charged for the magazines....  We are planning to call & hopefully be able to cancel....  I fused at him for signing up in the first place & now see what a mess....

I doubt the other posters who neither recognized nor authorized the account debit would describe this company as "efficient and effective".  "Shady and criminal" would be a more apt description of this practice.

This is a report on a phone call  I made to 877 312 1121.  I had an unexpected $15 charge on my debit card.  I called the number listed on the statement and they verified it was for a renewal of a magazine I had ordered last year.  I asked that they cancel and refund the money.  They offered all kinds of incentives to keep the subscription, which I declined. They said they would process the refund within 72 hrs.  Keeping my fingers crossed.  But in fairness, I saw nothing wrong with what they were doing-running a efficient, effcetive magazine subscription service (assuming of course they do refund my money).  Whooo.  Now you got me wondering if I get a big phone bill for the call??
