I verified with Verizon that this is NOT one of their numbers. The call originally came from 509-228-7879 to call this toll-free number.

No its a scam. I just sent it to Verizon. They call with a local number and then call an 877 number. My Verizon account is all paid up. I have auto pay so they said it was a fishing scam. One of the reason because they never said the companies name if it was Verizon. They just said an account verification. Verizon will always identify itself.

I'm getting repeated messages from numbers located in Jersey City (area codes 551 and 916). A recorded message claiming to be from Verizon tells me to call 877-340-2028 for a Service Alert. They call twice a day, maybe more. I called Verizon and they said they don't have any calling centers in New Jersey. Nor is there anything wrong with my account.

I just got a voicemail from 253-292-6990, stating that I needed to call 877-340-2028 with my account number, which happened to be my cellphone number. The first thing that popped into my head is that maybe my payment didn't go through.  I checked my cellphone bill (which I received two days ago), and it showed my payment was credited.  I thought the voicemail was unusual, because if something is wrong with my account, I always get a text message from Verizon on my cellphone first.  If I were going to call Verizon about some "problem", then I would've called the number printed on my Verizon bill. I added a line for my mom, so I immediately told her that if she were to get any texts or phone calls about the cellphone bill, to direct them to me (since I pay the bill).  I'm glad I found this website.

Got the service alert call claiming to be from Verizon. The call came from 951-402-2685.
The call message informed me that:
I should call 877-340-2028
My 10 digit account phone number would be required.
I would have a reference number, that happened to be my phone number.

Theory:
So, if you call back, the usual questions Name, Address, and Account phone number are asked and recorded by the scammers.
Now you have just given them most all they need to call verizon as YOU.
If they are successfule, they can add a line, "check to see if the billing information is correct, etc.
Now they may have even gotten your CC number from the verizon rep. while verifying your account information is correct.
Always call *611 on your cell phone to verify incoming verizon calls!

Verizon would call stating the department they are calling from.
The three legitamate calls you might receive are:
Billing- most likely for past due.
Account management- check on recent changes to your account.
Account Services- to inform you of offers and upgrades.

This is the reply from Verizon:
I am sorry for the confusion with this call. I certainly don't see any call attempts we've made on your account. There doesn't seem to be anything with your account that we would need to contact you about, so if you get this call again, you can feel free to ignore it. My name is Jason, my goal is to completely answer all of your questions.

You can report this call to make sure it is investigated. We have email addresses set up for this purpose. You can send this into phishing@verizon.com or cirt@verizon.com. This would make sure it's investigated and stopped.

Receive call asking us to call 877-340-2028.  Probably is a scam,  I talked to Verizon and they did not know what it was either.  They forwarded it to their fraud dept.  The number was also connected to 253-777-1504. in Federal Way, Wa.

Recording said it was a service alert.  I have been with them 15 years and never heard of that.

Better to be safe than sorry.

i got a message from this number supposedly from Verizon asking that I call them back and give them a 10 digit access # which of course happened to be my phone #.  The problem I have with this message is that although they called me by name, they used my married name and my account is is my maiden name, and if you call Verizon (or any other cell phone provider) from your wireless phone, they already know where you are calling from and you don't need to give them your phone number.  I called back just for kicks and giggles and it was the "Verizon message retrieval system" which asked me to enter my five digit billing zip code.  I entered a wrong zip code on purpose and then after a few seconds I was disconnected.
